This definitely comes (or at least it should come) as a shocker. It probably gets way overstated, but age 63 is way too young to die.
Now I know some here on our dais will probably say that Irene's Grammy win as Best Pop Female Vocalist in 1983 for "Flashdance (What A Feeling)" was a case of highway robbery, that Linda should have won for What's New. To that end, however, I think we have to look at the possibility that the Recording Academy, not to mention the critics and more than a few fans, may not have really gotten Linda's album of pre-rock pop standards at the time, at least not entirely; they at least understood enough about it to give both the album and Linda the nomination. In any case, "Flashdance (What A Feeling)" spent six weeks at #1 on the Billboard Hot 100, and the film it came from was a big box office hit; so you have to figure those factors in.
In any case, it's a loss for the music world, even if the main part of Irene's popularity was limited to the first half of the 1980's.

I wanted to put my afterthoughts and comments on the Grammys on a separate post. I think the Academy wasn't ready to award Linda the Grammy for Best Female Pop for American standards. They probably thought that nominating her and the album was enough. I am just speculating. This was before they had the Traditional Pop category that seemed to be started with the resurgence of Tony B's career and I think Linda's success had a lot to do with the new category. Linda got 2 Best Pop Performance noms out of WN and LL. eddiejinnj

If you look up the video on youtube of the grammy awards when Irene Cara won over Linda for her whats new album, Irene was shocked! She said on stage: "Are you sure"?!!!
