From the description/caption by the person who posted this video on Linda's birthday in 2022 --
" A double dose of the legendary Linda Ronstadt and a 40 year old pair of tracks from the sessions the singer memorialised for her 1982 opus 'Get Closer'. First up is the title song with an extra verse which was not the version that was finalised for the single or album. My thanks to Retrofan01 who posted the audio of this excellent new wave fusion of pop/rock that earned Linda another Grammy nomination. I re-edited the original clip a couple of times, it is still not perfect as the concept video and the longer mp3 didn't always match where I expected it to! The combination of Linda's sexy growl in that powerful vocal and the exemplary set of guitarists on the track gave it real edge and although the original was only 2 and a half minutes, this longer one does more justice to Jon Carroll's composition as well as the kick ass band of musicians in the studio with Linda.
'The Price Of Love' originally recorded by The Everly Brothers and covered famously by Bryan Ferry was incredulously not included on Linda's 1982 opus, but again my thanks to the youtuber who posted this rare gem. Once again the tight musicianship of the band and the brilliance of the famed British producer Peter Asher who Linda Ronstadt worked with a lot, makes 'The Price Of Love' another fabulous piece of pop/rock by this most versatile of singers. My clip is a pastiche of bits from the 'Get Closer' video and album and single art work from the 1982 recordings.
Happy 76th Birthday to Linda Ronstadt today (15th July, 2022). A singer par excellence and a discography that defies every rule and expectation of a contemporary singer. But Linda's talent knew no bounds.... "

The Price of Love sounds more like it belongs on Mad Love to me .... but its a great tune and I wish this and the extended Get Closer had a proper release!

The Price of Love sounds more like it belongs on Mad Love to me .... but its a great tune and I wish this and the extended Get Closer had a proper release! Not to my ears it doesn’t. Not fitting for Mad Love IMO, but then I would not consider the song/arrangement “Get Closer” (the song) “New Wave” like many have in the past. “Price of Love” is sort of “retro” sounding like all the other rocking songs on the Get Closer album do. The Mad Love album had a much more modern sound to it. The only retro sounding song on Mad Love to my ears is “Girls Talk”. “Hurt So Bad” and “I Can’t Let Go” might have been older songs but they don’t sound retro to my ears like the uptempo songs on Get Closer do.

If anything I would have included "Price of Love" on "Get Closer". I agree it is NOT a Mad Love song. "Price of Love" sounds like the '80's, which is now retro.
I got to say, I can see why it was cut though it does demonstrate that Linda can rock with the best of them. The music overall sound is better than the lyrics.

On Linda's box set, with that first disc (and spilling over into the second disc) being more popular cuts in reverse chronological order, Linda (who is very particular about sequencing) has it as ... Get Closer Hurt So Bad I Can't Let Go
In listening to the box set, I always felt like if you were to play it the other way around, the two "Mad Love" cuts of "I Can't Let Go" and "Hurt So Bad" flow well right into "Get Closer." So, to me, it's more of a progression. "Get Closer" was the next step musically from the sound of "I Can't Let Go"/"Get Closer." I think it would have been jarring to go from "Hurt So Bad" and into "The Moon Is a Harsh Mistress." Linda was right, IMHO, to sequence them together.

Re -Price of Love.. The beginning of the song sounds a lot like Bob Seger's Strut or Her Strut.. which is very bluesy.. I'm hearing that bluesy sound in Linda's Price of Love.. verses Linda's early 80's New Wave synthesizers in Mad Love..

"Watch Her Strut" is a cool song. The pounding beat does remind me of that. I just don't like lyrics and Linda sounds contrived at times. eddiejinnj

I can’t stand that song.

"Dusty Springfield was on a stop-over in New York City en route to Nashville to make a country music album with The Springfields in 1962, when she heard the Exciters' "Tell Him" playing while taking a late night walk by the Colony Record Store on Broadway: the experience persuaded Springfield to embark on a solo career with a pop/soul direction. She would recall: 'The Exciters [Brenda Reid lead singer] sort of got you by the throat...out of the blue comes blasting at you 'I know something about love,' and that’s it. That’s what I wanna do.' You can't find the Linda Ronstadt Official Music Video of "Get Closer" anywhere. WMG has blocked it. Boo.

I guess that I am of the opinion that "The Price Of Love" could have and should have been included on Get Closer, though others might honorably disagree with me. I am also of the belief that "My Blue Tears" and "Talk To Me Of Mendocino" seem out of place on it--and here's where I'll probably get some blowback.

Mike, my personal opinion is that “Get Closer,” in hindsight feels like a hodgepodge. “My Blue Tears” and “Sometimes You Just Can’t Win” are songs from an earlier time in her career. She had done “Pirates” and was jonesing to record a standards album. Although back in 1982, I saw her perform twice on her “Get Closer” tour, and played the album a lot, it’s not a favorite or touchstone album. My favorite song on the album is “Easy for You To Say.” (I can already feel the rotten eggs and tomatoes pelting me for that!) 😉

Rick--exactly. I think we're struggling to make stylistically cohesive an album that was never meant to be more than a mix of styles, some vault clearing, and contract honoring. Linda was pining for the standards and I don't think that her heart was fully in making this album. Still, it has some beautiful tracks. Even Christgau liked "Mr. Radio."

Dianna, I agree that POL needed a grittier voice. It is really just a cheesy 80's song to me. Not great but not bad. Rob is right on target also. I have said in the past that if they changed the order of the 2 add ons it would have worked better. "Sometimes You Just Can't Win" could have come right after "Mr. Radio" and even if they left "My Blue Tears" at the end, Linda's album had a sad one at the end of a number of albums. HLAW ended with "You Can Close Your Eyes" Simple Dreams ended with "Old Paint" PID ended with "Silver Blue" and LITUSA ended with an acoustic "Love Me Tender". I think I make my point well, lol!!! eddiejinfl

I sure see your point Erik, but those two songs along with “I Just Can’t Win” round out the album in the old Ronstadt style. At this point after forty years I can’t imagine the album without those tunes. I am sure some feel that way about “Tell Him”, all I know is I wish “Price of Love” would have made the cut. I think they could have fit one more tune. For some reason it didn’t. Wonder what the other couple of songs were from the first session they scraped? Get Closer is a great album that I appreciate more each time I listen to it. I was disappointed when it didn’t do as well as it should have back in 82. It felt strange for a die hard back in the day even though I loved it. It did feel pieced together, but with time I’ve grown to love it.

Some would argue that the huge chronological gap between the releases of Mad Love and Get Closer, which was filled by doing Pirates, both on the Broadway stage (in NYC) and on film (in England), was very exhausting to endure, especially since a lot of people really didn't know what to think of her doing Pirates in the first place. It's tempting to think of Get Closer as a commercial "flop" in comparison to the previous six studio albums just because it stalled out at #31 on the Billboard Top 200 Album Chart, but it still went Gold, selling 900,000 copies in its first year of release.
And let's not forget that none of the studio albums she made after Cry Like A Rainstorm sold anywhere close to what Get Closer did (Trio II charted the highest, and even that album only got to #62).

yea a shame the original length video isn't on Rhino's youtube account and an older upload from 2012 is blocked by WMG so we're currently stuck with the original video's content but hacked up swapped around and some footage lost to match the Extended Version. i even tried restoring it to the original length but ended up with gaps where the footage has been lost due to the extended cut.

I have heard that one before. Great to reprise for a lot of new members, etc. That song was not on any album, correct? How are these two on YouTube with out a release since they not live? eddiejinnj As far as I know they weren't on any album except a bootleg or compilation album. I don't understand why Price of Love wasn't included on the Get Closer album. It is a good song with a catchy tune and the vocals are strong. Things have a way of disappearing from youtube never to be seen again so if one can figure it out they should try to download them while they last.
I use a programme called MP3 Studio Youtube downloader, you can choose to convert Youtube videos to MP4 or MP3 or other formats. It occasionally fails but mostly works beautifully and simply for films or audio. Added: Sorry only just realised the post was Ancient History...I'm sure we all have downloading from Youtube worked out these days :-) :-)
