My favourite release of DCN is the Japanese mini-LP CD in the WMJ 40th anniversary series. A great improvement over any other, including MSFL's audiophile release. Similarily SD & LITUSA are best over others. Linda's singing is sound staged front and center on the Japanese CD, while other versions have her sounding backstaged to her band and behind a veil, especially noticeable on "Desperado", for example. I think perhaps western mastering & re-mastering prioritises instrumentation over vocals. Not just rock, but opera as well. It's such a chore to actually have to go grab a CD off the shelf, but I will listen to that Japanese mini-LP again. Anything that puts Linda's voice front and center will be appreciated. I don't usually spend much time comparing different versions, but the Rockbeat issue of Heart Like a Wheel immediately seemed like the winning version of that album to me. I love playing discs, vinyl or CD. No DAC required, a simpler time. I was so dissatisfied with the audio on those early CDs, that I tried different releases. Linda deserves the best, and I wanted as close to perfect as I could find. For HLAW, the Audio Fidelity re-master by Steve Hoffman from original master tapes is excellent, either 24k gold CD or vinyl. GH 1 & 2 DCC releases are the best for those. For "What's New?", the Japanese DSD re-master CD or DVD-A are superb. I like the MSFL HLAW, best of all their Linda albums.

I've been listening to this album for 40 years and I've only just noticed that Linda is singing 'wog' not 'one'. She knew exactly what she was singing about and has said that she only selected the songs she believed in.

Those words are not as pronounced as say the word aboard right before, imo. I kind of trail off singing them before starting the chorus. Welcome to the forum, H!!! Are you saying that Linda knew it was about slavery and why do you think she sang it and based on what belief, in your opinion? eddiejinfl

The original lyric is "wog" so I'm sure that's what Linda is saying. Of course she knew what she was singing about--she's highly intelligent and wouldn't choose a song that didn't have an important message, or else something meaningful to her.

I guess some have said that her delivery of it caused people to think she may not know the subject of it. I remember as a kid that I was suspect to the meaning of song but Linda does deliver it in such a pretty straight-forward way, it almost comes across too cheery and a quasi-patriotic song on the surface. Randy Newman is known for his irony. eddiejinfl

It's a similar type of irony as the song 'Living in the USA." In either case, maybe she didn't come across as effectively as she could in her interpretations. That would constitute a missed opportunity considering her keen intelligence and political awareness.
