One will always wonder if the splicing of Elvis' original 1956 recording of "Love Me Tender" with Linda's 1978 version was really nothing more than a lark, but it sure caused one of the biggest kerfuffles in American music history. After all, we are only talking about arguably the most influential single figure in 20th century American popular music, and the woman who was arguably his female equivalent--if not in terms of flamboyance, certainly in terms of vocal dexterity.
We can thank Peter Asher for being Linda's producer and manager for all of those years, and who really considered Linda very sharp-minded and sure of her ideas (even if she felt she was a lot less sure about how she herself executed those ideas). Elvis, sadly, didn't have anything but a shyster for a manager, and that's not an exaggeration. I doubt Peter would have ever wanted Linda to star in the same cycle of B-movie musicals year after year the way "The Colonel" made Elvis do throughout the 1960's (and Linda never thought of herself as a star anyway, let alone a movie star). And however ambivalent Linda may have been about "You're No Good" or "Heat Wave", at least she didn't suffer the indignity of having done "Do The Clam" or "There's No Room To Rhumba In A Sports Car" (or that the writers of those songs wrote them at the behest of the Gasbag of Greed).

Excellent interview with Peter when producing Living in the USA was still very recent, including how he and Linda and the band chose the songs, and the cover art process (too bad Kosh came out "Kotch"). I see Linda's knee socks in the poster behind Peter in the photo with "staffer" Gloria Boyce where he's holding the picture disc. Here's one of Linda with Gloria (Getty Images says "Linda Ronstadt and secretary Gloria Boyce attending the taping of "Motown 25-Yesterday, Today, Forever" on March 25, 1983 at the Pasadena Civic Auditorium in Pasadena, California. (Photo by Ron Galella/Ron Galella Collection via Getty Images)." Not sure if that's correct, another posting here said that they were not at Motown 25: ronstadt.proboards.com/thread/3409/linda-ronstadt-concerts-performances-appearances
