Well this definitely isn't good--especially not when you consider that one of Arclight's holdings is the Cineramadome, easily one of the most historically important movie theaters anywhere in the world.

When I heard more about this on the news last night, they interviewed some people outside the Cineramadome who suggested that all the big-name film directors in town, some of whose movies had been shown at that theater over the decades, should chip in some money to keep the place open. That isn't too bad a suggestion, quite honestly. The place is a landmark, both for the motion picture as an art form and for Los Angeles' history in general; and it's sad to see it and all the other theaters in the ArcLight and Pacific chains now shuttered, perhaps forever.
It should be noted that one of the films the C-Dome showed back in the day, because it was one of the last films made with the Cinerama wrap-around process developed by MGM, was 2001: A Space Odyssey, back in 1968. That film, as has been well documented, turned Hollywood totally upside down; and the C-Dome had a great part in making that happen.

Erik, a friend of mine who has worked in the entertainment industry (he also serves on the L.A. Cultural Heritage Affairs commission) for many years wrote this to me today -- " I don’t think Dome could be demolished, since there’s so much community support. I’m thinking either a reconstituted Arclight/Pacific will continue there or another chain (or even individual, like Tarantino) will come in and save the day. If this were to happen, from whichever side, it could only be a good thing--not just for the revival of the Cineramadome, but for the entire concept of the movie theater as a whole. I know all about streaming services like Netflix and Amazon Prime....but for God's sake, movies deserve to be shown on a Big Screen.

I can definitely believe this has hit the Hollywood film community like a hydrogen bomb. Here's hoping next week's Academy Awards will emphasize the need to keep this from happening to other film chains, because...and I'll probably be saying this until I am blue in the face....no matter how convenient streaming services may be, they are no substitute for the darkened movie theater and the big screen.
