I think McMurtry understood that one of the things many of us had grown up with believing about the West is that it was about limitless opportunities, which, in history, really wasn't the case, but quite the opposite. This is why a lot of his novels really helped put the West into a perspective that kind of belies what we had been told by all the John Wayne films.
McMurtry was arguably the last of his kind, and so it is definitely sad to see him pass from the scene.
