I really like PoP …. I think everyone involved did a thoroughly great job on it - Linda, Rex, Kevin and Angela. Even the staging is fun with it’s cartoon-like feel. Both in the Park and on Broadway, Pirates was one of the most entertaining shows I've ever seen. The casting was perfect and the Gilbert & Sullivan score is engaging and hilarious. Linda based her character on Snow White, which definitely in line with the cartoon-ish tone. To sum it all up, the show was a "precious gem!"

Was there ever an album release of the movie soundtrack as opposed to stage? I could be mistaken but, I thought Peter Asher had said it was recorded and never released. I wonder why. I have only been able to find the movie whole.

According to Billboard, the original cast album peaked at #178 on June 20, 1981, and stayed on the charts only three weeks. Maybe Peter or Elektra (or whichever label would have released it—Universal distributed the film) determined that there wasn't enough market for a soundtrack too. www.billboard.com/music/original-cast/chart-history/billboard-200/song/825664

Leland Sklar talked about his toughest gig he ever had and revealed that it was working on the pirates of penzance movie which I believe involved starting with the Broadway cast recording and “sweetening it.” He said what made it difficult was there were no charts and he had to anticipate what to play instead of being able to read and play along. Of course Angela Lansbury would have needed to be freshly recorded because she was mot on the Broadway recording. So I wonder to what extent Linda re-recorded bits and pieces of the soundtrack.did she re do all of it? I’d need to cue up the cast album and the movie and listen to them both simultaneously or very closely.

Just to be clear, the Broadway cast album was released (Elektra, 1981, produced by Peter Asher). The soundtrack to the 1983 movie may have been recorded but so far has not been released.

Rob is correct. I know of no movie soundtrack. The Broadway Show one I bought as a senior in HS. I think it was Record Den. I know it was in Ocean County Mall I bought it. eddiejinfl

Interesting photo of stars from Broadway shows, including “Pirates of Penzance,” in 1980. I see Kevin Kline, George Rose and Rex Smith. It’s possible Linda was busy — http://instagram.com/p/CUu2nCmrT44

What was the TV movie that led to Linda's live PoP performances, then the theatrical movie?

I'm not sure what you are asking, hb or I have never heard about such a TV movie. Was this movie an influence for Linda? eddiejinnj
