So I made an account just to post this comment. I am in my 30s and usually just lurk here, but someone I follow on facebook who has thousands++ of followers posted this about the event this weekend: "Last night Sesame Street, Sally Field, Linda Ronstadt and others were at the dinner for the new Kennedy Center honorees, and Linda definitely stole the show. Sally Field's son tweeted this last night from the big shindig: **At the State Dept. dinner for the Kennedy Center honorees Mike Pompeo wondered aloud when he would be “loved”. Then Linda Ronstadt got up to get laurels, looked the fucker right in the eye and said “maybe when you stop enabling Donald Trump”. Icon.** I just wanna remind y'all that Linda Ronstadt has always been about that life. Watch this clip from 1983 when Don Lane asks her if she received any criticism for recently playing a show in South Africa. She's never had a censor button." ***this is a page mostly read by millennials (like me) but as someone in my mid30s, we all love her. Attachments:

Glad she was able to be there in person, it's a long trip. She looks good, but it's sad to see that she needs a wheelchair, I hope her health hasn't worsened suddenly. She burned Pompeo and Trump really good, hope that quote will be televised. Many people praised her, but I saw some really disturbing and hateful comments about her on YouTube and Reddit. Magahats are really vile people, they should be on a Homeland Security watchlist.

Great to see that picture of her with Peter Asher, seeing as how this artist/production team was one of the most artistically and commercially successful of that type over the last fifty years.

I received an alert on my phone at what would be 3 p.m. in Washington, D.C., that the program/show for the Kennedy Center Honors has started. The show is pretty heavily edited to fit the 8 pm to 10 pm timeslot that CBS allocates for it.

Linda Ronstadt to Mike Pompeo: Stop ‘Enabling’ Donald TrumpBy PAUL HARRIS

WASHINGTON, D.C. — Linda Ronstadt, one of this year’s Kennedy Center Honorees, had sharp words for Secretary of State Mike Pompeo on Saturday night during a State Department reception for the Kennedy Center kudos.
Ronstadt and Pompeo faced off in the U.S. State Department’s ornate diplomatic greeting rooms at the traditional event that precedes Sunday’s Honors gala. Some 200 guests were assembled to celebrate this year’s honorees: Ronstadt, Sally Field, Earth, Wind and Fire, conductor Michael Tilson Thomas and “Sesame Street.” The State Department dinner is where honorees receive their Kennedy Center rainbow ribbons.
Pompeo, an embattled protector of President Trump, was enjoying his first turn as official host of the event. During the pre-dinner welcoming address, he quipped: “As I travel the world, I wonder when will I be loved,” invoking the words of Ronstadt’s 1975 hit “When I Be Loved,” penned by Phil Everly.
Ronstadt has been an outspoken critic of Trump. When it came her turn following dinner to receive the honor and make optional remarks, Ronstadt rose to the microphone a few feet away from the host’s table and looked straight ahead. “I’d like to say to Mr. Pompeo, who wonders when he’ll be loved, it’s when he stops enabling Donald Trump.” Then she sat down.
The line drew immediate gasps from the audience, followed by slowly building applause, and then cheers.
Among those in attendance was House Speaker Nancy Pelosi, who received a standing ovation from a majority of the politically divided gathering.
Ronstadt disclosed in 2013 that she was suffering from Parkinson’s disease. She is the subject of the new documentary “Linda Ronstadt: The Sound of My Voice,” which was released theatrically earlier this year and is set to debut Jan. 1 on CNN.Linda Ronstadt: "When Will I Be Loved?" (USA; "Midnight Special", 1975)

Sorry to hear that Linda chose this venue to make this comment to Mr. Pompeo. It serves no purpose and only adds fuel to the already combustible political climate in our country. For me, this kind of ruins the event. She's entitled to say what she wants but she could have held back. So much for being more graceful.

She said what a lot of people in that room and outside of that room know already. Just because she’s an artist, she didn’t abdicate her right as a citizen. Did Pompeo need to try to be cute/creepy asking when would he be loved? The answer to that question, with regard to him, should be “Never.” He’s not a stupid man, but he has political aspirations to run for Senate in very conservative Kansas and so he sides with the dictator-wannabe.

If that ruins the entire event for you I think you might have bigger problems. Pompeo or whoever wrote that speech set him up for a response that Linda took him up on. He asked a simple question and he got a simple answer. It could've been much worse, considering...believe me.

Still NO word of the performers? Nothing that I could find. I wonder if they jammed all the cell phones at the venue?

"chose this venue"
Err...sorry, you are wrong,,,,,the U.S. CITIZENS...thru their (supposed) elected Officials CHOSE LINDA!!!!!!!!!!!!
as a U.S. Citizen...who's lineage includes MANY CONTRIBUTIONS to U.S. society, LINDA HAS EVERY RIGHT TO HER FREE SPEECH in said presence of our "elected officials" (and I'm including the grabbers on that are "appointed" by way of said "elected" "off icial")
THE U.S. CONSTITUTION says we're supposed to hang em for Treason...so quite frankly...LINDA was representing a large segment of our collectives sentiments and should be LAUDED for her commentary
not chastised....but then again...
she wasn't "grace" "full" enough....she chose to not "have held back"
....that's right Bud,,,,she wouldn't Swallow

I've been reading a lot of the comments on the news stories on the net. Mostly they are pro-Linda, but some say that she should not have made this political. But did she really?
Pompeo said: “As I travel the world, I wonder. When will I be loved?”
Isn't he the one who made it political with that statement? And using a Ronstadt song as the attention getter. I would expect her to respond.
Pompeo says someone wrote that line for him. But he spoke it. He asked a question, and Linda answered.

In case anyone's interested, yes, Linda's Mexican-American heritage was celebrated, by the all-female mariachi group Flor de Toloache.

As far as I'm concerned, the mistake was whoever decided Mike Pompeo was the right choice to host the honors. Bad choice. And also, someone else should've been chosen to have introduced their celebrities being honored, some of whom share Linda's disdain (which is putting it mildly) for the Trump administration. My apologies to Eddie. Sometimes, my friend, you can't avoid a political firestorm.

I believe that is the tradition. The Gala event was hosted by LL Cool J.
