wow, where do you buy that? are they the original recordings? thanks eddiejinnj I put a link to the location where it was available at one time in the Neville Christmas thread. Not sure if it still is but you can contact them. The majority of the songs I have included in my duets playlist on youtube if they were available. Youtube changes so often, deletes and adds I suppose I should go through it again. I see a link to where it's referenced in the Neville thread but how do you buy it? Do you have a copy?

LINDA RONSTADT ORPHAN SONGS
my growing playlist on youtube:
www.youtube.com/playlist?list=PLUMq4sB5dsC_bBt3s5TfdFbtA-KCqgNIJI am compiling a list of Ronstadt Orphan Songs which are mostly studio or "stand-alone" songs Linda recorded that were either unreleased, released as a single with no parent album or are just songs hanging out there on their own. At least that is the definition I give them. I cannot find a definition anywhere. Technically there are some songs that one might think are orphans but they were actually children of another non-Ronstadt album like a Disney compilation or movie soundtrack. Some like Somewhere Out There, Dreams To Dream, Someday My Prince Will Come are a few examples. Not sure if there is a real name for that type of song or if I should consider it an orphan song. Foster songs? lol
I would like anyone's thoughts on this and if they can remember songs that I haven't thought of.
Would also appreciate it if someone has or has found a definition for an "orphan song."
(I am also considering a live orphan song category where I would include such gems as The First Cut, Fill My Eyes, Walking Down The Line, etc.)
I know there are more like Where Is The Love with Joe Ely or Border Town, The Blacksmith is another one but I can't include it on my playlist because every time it gets posted on youtube it is soon after removed. The Box Set had others on it that may or may not qualify. As far as I know New Partner Waltz and Pretty Bird were orphans until they were included on Linda's Duets Album. So I would consider adopted orphans still orphans. If He's Only a Man "The Shoop-Shoop Song (It's in His Kiss)" Even Closer I Shall Be Released I'm Restless Over The Rainbow (may not be a studio single) ronstadt.proboards.com/thread/53/unreleased-studio-recordings-linda www.galeon.com/ronstadt/ronstadtbootlegs.htm From the Box SetGainesville Randy Newman Sandman's Coming Randy Newman My Hero Randy Newman All I Have to Do Is Dream Boudleaux Bryant / Felice Bryant Dreams to Dream James Horner / Will Jennings The Blacksmith Traditional Bandit & A Heart Breaker Judee Sill I Want a Horse Linda Ronstadt / Wendy Waldman Border Town J.D. Disney's Cinderella CD with: A Dream is a Wish Your Heart Makes Un Precioso Sueño [La Cenicienta]
Or the Fantastic Five CD with: So Fine (perhaps the earliest Linda Ronstadt/Stone Poneys recording) Someone mentioned there was another song with this on a '45
Rambler Gambler was on a Mad Love '45, it was on a Country CD Compilation 18 Country Ladies
BTW, the first three songs were on Randy Newman's Faust. I remember that Linda used to sing one of Bonnie Raitt's songs during her tours in the 2000's because she'd rather sing the bad girl songs than good girl songs.

"New Partner Waltz" was from the Louvin Brothers tribute album. That was "Feels Like Home" "How about", which later became a song and an album of Linda's. I would like to hear "Over the Rainbow" again. I think I wasn't sure of my opinion re: the arrangement of it. "Rambler Gambler" was the B side of the single "How Do I Make You". I think I heard "I Shall Be Released". I don't think I have heard "If He's Only a Man" or "Even Closer". "The Man I Love" is a great orphan song and blows other versions out of the water. As far as the live orphan category I would include: "God Bless the Child" with Billy Eckstein, "The Married Men" with Phoebe on SNL, "Drift Away" with Cher. "Applejack" with Dolly and Emmy on Dolly's show (I am correct that it was the 3 of them correct?). Didn't she do "Bury Me Beneath the Willow Tree"? Was that also on Dolly's show? Then there are a number of songs or medleys she did on "The Andy Williams Show" (though we discussed that Linda does not remember being on Andy's show)and Glen Campbell's show. eddiejinnj
PS: Didn't she do "Signed Sealed Delivered" on Leo Sayer's show?

I'm not sure about this one, but how about "Carnival Bear," the non-album B-side of the Linda Ronstadt/Stone Poneys single, "Up to My Neck in High Muddy Water?" I don't recall that song ever being on an album, which makes it a lost track. That it has never been issued on a US album (that I'm aware of) since its release in 1968 is surprising. It may have been released on an album in other countries but not everyone has had access to albums released in other countries.

Early 1970s live songs not included on studio albums: • How Long (circa 1972-3) • Nightingale (circa 1973) • California Blues (circa 1974)
2 songs from the 1971 movie Maybe I'll Come Home In The Spring (aka Deadly Desires) • Maybe I'll Come Home In The Spring • Different Day
Songs from the What’s New video and 1984 concerts: • Keeping Out Of Mischief (also recorded for the 1981 Lost Album) • Hey Daddy • Mr. Sandman • Kalamazoo • Dream • Choo Choo Ch'boogie
Just to clarify ronstadtfanaz’s post above:
Comments on Even Closer were posted previously (see above).
Linda sang the theme for Andy Griffith's early 1970s TV series "Headmaster" If He's Only a Man.(aka The Headmaster theme)
Linda’s 1986 concerts contained ‘new material’ in the middle section that featured Linda and/or the “Singers”. This material included: • In The Mood • String of Pearls • Don't Be That Way • Somewhere Over The Rainbow • Opus One • Sing Sing Sing

I should have added "Carnival Bear" The "Star Spangled Banner" is an orphan "live" performance. "Mr. Sandman" is fortunately not an orphan track. Is the listing of "Dream" the same song as "Dream, Dream, Dream" she did on the "Muppets Unpigged" album? That "Say You Will" song listed above I never heard. Is it on one of JD's albums? If so, as I understand this thread, it would not be an orphan track just one of the many (over 120) albums she was on by other artists.
I would love to hear her sing "How Long" by Ace. Over the past few years or so , I found out (probably from Casey Kasem) that the song is not about an affair or cheating in the traditional sense but Paul Carrack finding out that a fellow band member was playing with another band. So like adultery/cheating it is about a loyalty situation. That is one song (and I am not trying to do it to anybody) that when I hear it or think of it it just keeps playing in my head. It is one of those songs that comes to my mind first thing in the am. Maybe it is weird and don't tell anybody (lol) but I always wake up with a song in my mind. I get up singing a song I guess I had in my subconscious during sleep. I am not sure. Just looked above and saw that "If He's Only a Man" was from the Headmaster which I have heard before a couple times but never knew there was a title to it. eddiejinnj

Does anyone have a good mp3 of "Carnival Bear" to share? This song, particularly the song and the TV/movies mentioned above, reminded me that Linda also did the theme song for a cartoon "Corduroy Bear". Was this popular? Not having kids, don't know much about what is (or was) popular with kids. Perhaps she did this, as well as her Children's album, at an appropriate age for her own kids.
By the way, I went back and listened to the Box Set CD that started this thread - realized that the last song on the CD was the flip site to "So Fine". Linda doing surfer music - cool.

Thanks for that musicfan. I never even knew that and thought I knew just about everything Ronstadt. It must have happened during my living years. lol
I just added it to my Linda Ronstadt Orphan Song playlist on youtube: www.youtube.com/playlist?list=PLUMq4sB5dsC_bBt3s5TfdFbtA-KCqgNIJ It has to be watched on youtube. At 1:00 it mentions Linda Ronstadt performing the Corduroy theme.I don't even see Linda mentioned in the Wiki review but we all know it is her:

I wish "The Price of Love" would have been on Get Closer, either replacing "Tell Him" or the title tune. "The Price of Love" would have done better at radio than "Get Closer" which I thought was a lame song and I was shocked when I heard it. "Tell Him" is one of her worst recording IMO. Still, I love the album.

I think "Tell Him" is great. The background in the original is cool so retro but I think Linda did a great job with it. I like how "Lies" goes into "Tell Him" on the album. If she included the song "Price of Love" one of the others would not necessarily have to be taken away. I think the 70's going into the 80's could be a cheesy time. Olivia's "Physical" though catchy and had skin in the vid was really a pretty cheesy song and that was 1981. Maybe in some cases it was 70's artists getting older and seeing where they fit in artistically in the 80's decade. We know for Linda that she sold more albums in the 80's than 70's and she was the number one female of that decade.
AZ, I too thought I knew just about everything "Ronstadt" musically and never heard that theme song. It is so cute. Linda seems very at ease and does an excellent job doing children's shows and songs. I think she could be a narrator for a children's cartoon. eddiejinnj

Yes Ronstadtfanaz! I've got that Ronstadt's CD box set and Hoyt Axton's "Lightning Bar Blues". The best version my humble opinion! But a quick search on you boob shows it got beat to death by a lot of folks like Commander Cody, Brownsville Station, Hanoi Rocks, and a very large following in the Asian Community!

Just curious if this one is an orphan song? It was on L.R. Topic in a 70's compilation album. Anyway, great video of Linda in 1984!

That wouldn't be an orphan song by definition since it is a song Linda recorded and is on an album. It wouldn't even be a live orphan song for the same reason.
A good example of a "Live" Orphan song would be Walkin' Down The Line which Linda sang on Playboy After Dark. Was never on any of her albums and wasn't even in any of her concerts that I know of.
I never particularly liked that song until I saw that video you many years ago. Now I like it. She did a few songs on that show with the McGarrigle's.

"Walking Down the Line " is a live orphan song. "Ticket to Ride" medley with A. Williams plus she did "I'm a Believer" medley on G. Campbell's show. eddiejinnj

In case someone else didn't answer you already: Linda sang Signed, Sealed Delivered on Smokey Robinson's show in the 80s (she sang it with Boy George and Smokey).

Does anyone have this lp? or an mp3 of World I Never Made and Wait Wait Wait which are two more Orphan Songs?bigozine2.com/roio/?p=657A WINTER’S TALE December 18, 2010 – 4:02 am The music industry is killing itself when it no longer respects artists who helped them build their business.

LINDA RONSTADT Ultrasonic Studios [Mid Valley Records, 1CD] Live at Ultrasonic Studios, Washington Ave, New Orleans, USA; April 7, 1990. Excellent soundboard stereo.
Did you know that last year, Warner Music removed from circulation the following Linda Ronstadt albums - Get Closer, Cry Like A Rainstorm (Howl Like The Wind), We Ran and Western Wall: The Tucson Sessions? Winter Light went out-of-print a year earlier in 2008.
This year the Japanese bootleg label Mid Valley surprised collectors with the release of a Linda Ronstadt session, Ultrasonic Studios. The cover art has a 3M tape box naming the producer as Peter Asher and the engineer as George Massenburg. The session was held in New Orleans.
This appears to have been recorded right after the success of her 1989 album, Cry Like A Rainstorm, which also included duets with Neville Brother, Aaron. One track here, Close Your Eyes, would later be re-recorded with Ronstadt as producer for Aaron Neville’s solo album Warm Your Heart. Whatever tracks that were later released were all re-recorded elsewhere or had additional work done to them. Neville’s album was recorded in California.
By the ’90s, Ronstadt had already moved far away from California Rock or Soft Rock. She’d become a mature song stylist working with Nelson Riddle and offering a trio of world music albums. But the business beckoned and she’d made one more pop album with Cry Like A Rainstorm which earned her two Grammys and sold for her record label three million copies.
This session in New Orleans might have been an attempt to repeat that formula. However, with the exception of Close Your Eyes which was another duet with Aaron Neville, the rest of the songs did not make it out until 1998. Two remain unreleased. In the interim, Ronstadt made Frenesi, produced her first album with Winter Light and recycled her Trio II recordings and released Feels Like Home.
Two tracks from the New Orleans session were finally brought out when she attempted her second self-produced album, We Ran, in 1998. But poor health led her to send for producer Glyn Johns who made We Ran a rock album, rather than a rock ‘n’ roll album that Ronstadt had originally planned. It would be the last rock album, to date, that Ronstadt recorded. Here’s why:
“…it’s very important for me to not have my middle-age be a repeat of my youth, and my old age to not be a repeat of my middle-age. Whatever it is, there’s blessings and there’s disadvantages of all those things, and I want the genuine blessings.”
She said that in 1998. Read the full interview here.
Ronstadt, 64, is no recluse. If she’s not chasing for chart action it’s because she’s been there and done that. Right now travelling and playing in big halls/arenas are not her “thing”. She’d rather be at home. Too bad her label has other ideas and not creative ones at that. Artists like Ronstadt need to be challenged to come out with something new and not made to recreate “glory days”.
Whoever passed that tape to Mid Valley, all Ronstadt fans are grateful. If anyone knows who played at the New Orleans sessions, please post the details. - Professor Red

Ruler Of My Heart and Cry Until My Tears Run Dry finally made it on Linda Ronstadt’s 1998 album, We Ran. Both were different recordings with input from We Ran’s producer Glyn Johns.
Too Soon To Know was rerecorded for the 1993 Linda Ronstadt album, Winter Light.
Both Wait Wait Wait and World I Never Made remain unreleased.
Don’t hesitate. You can still buy Linda Ronstadt’s out-of-print album Cry Like A Rainstorm (Howl Like The Wind). Click on the link to order the album.

why has linda's version of "Border Town" been removed from You Tube? of course it is on the "rare CD" of the box set which i had and now have to replace since it was lost in one of my many moves. i think amazon is probably the place i should repurchase this item. anyway trying to get an answer as to why it was removed from the internet.
