Excitable Boy is just flat out out there. Doo wop to grisly details. Linda did quite a bit with him musically but seems more peripheral in discussing him personally as if she hardly knew him. She of course loves a lot of his songs and says he was a quiet person. I think don't quote me that she said he was hard to get to know him. Does anybody know if I read it on here? Love "Empty Handed Heart" too. eddiejinfl

I think Linda worked with Warren Zevon in the very early years. Did he not do some vocals on the Silk Purse album?
But you are correct-- she didn't seem to really know him very well.
I was very surprised that the tribute album Enjoy Every Sandwich: The Songs of Warren Zevon did not have a song sung by Linda Ronstadt.
But even more surprising was the biography by x-wife Crystal Zevon never mentioned Linda Ronstadt even once. Surprising because she sang on his albums often and many think it was her versions of his songs that led to his discovery by the masses.

Quote by eddiejinnj:
I think Linda recalled her first meeting with Zevon as being a nervous one for her; she thought his initial behavior was like the infamous Chicago serial killer Richard Speck. But she got to know him much better, realizing that he was kind of a shy, introverted person...admittedly, with a very black and morbid sense of humor.

Boss, I don't think Zevon was on SP. Never heard of that Zevon tribute album but if Linda not on it that is probably why (intentionally catty). IC would make a good song lyric and or title of a song. eddiejinfl

Let's not forget that Linda moved into Zevon's Beachwood apt. after he moved out, so that connection worked out in more ways than one.

Boss, I don't think Zevon was on SP. Well, musician credits for Silk Purse are hard to find. But I have always been under the impression that he was one of the "Beechwood Rangers" that join Linda on Life is Like a Mountain Railway, the Beechwood Rangers being her Beachwood Canyon neighbors. I don't think the Beechwood Rangers were a real group, since that name has never appeared on any other recording. However, a little research shows I might be wrong. One source shows the Beechwood Rangers as being Russ Giguere, Bill Martin, and Warren Zevon. But according to Rodney Dillard, the Beechwood Rangers was him, Herb Pederson, Bernie Leadon, and Harry Dean Stanton. Somehow this seems more plausible.

FYI: I combined the thread "Linda Ronstadt Orphan Songs" with "Linda Ronstadt Rarities" because there was so much crossover and overlap. This might be helpful for those who are trying to complete their Linda Ronstadt Collection to see these all in one place. Thank you.

Has anything ever surfaced in relation to these recording?
Linda Ronstadt and Peter Yarrow 'The Water is Wide' and 'Ave Maria'.

I have Linda’s version of “The Water Is Wide” from David Sanborn’s album.

I definitely know of this recording that Linda did with David Sanborn. But if Linda ever did it before, especially with one-third of one of her formative influences of the 1960s folk era, I don't think any of us has ever heard of it.

You are correct, sir. I have never heard of it. I wonder why she called Yarrow. Did he have access to the studio? Had she recently talked to him and he was on her mind? For her to know him is not shocking but yet I have never heard her talk about personally knowing him. Of course, we all want to hear the recordings. This would have been a great story for the book. More of the kind of stuff the Boss was referring to. Nothing seedy but a nice musical story. eddiejinnj

In that still above she looks great. Her version has grown on me over the years. Even though I believe she is lip synching this one, the song sounds great in this venue and volume wise. eddiejinnj

Just bought Linda's 3 songs from "Faust" as MP3s from Amazon, though Gainsborough is on the Rarities CD in Box Set.

Pretty flawless lip-sync. So good, I thought she was singing live to the recorded track. Love to know who the background singers were. They come close to stealing it. But as Tony said, credits for "Silk Purse" are scarce. I checked every listing on Discogs and the only background vocals credited were Gary White on "Louise" and The Beachwood Rangers on "Life Is Like a Mountain Railway."

hey Greg: Welcome to the forum. Is it still the only way to get "Living Like a Fool" in a recorded version? I can't recall; is Free Creek version live or studio? I was thinking studio. eddiejinnj

The Free Creek sessions were done, unless I am mistaken, in a New York City studio; and Linda's two contributions ("Living Like A Fool"; "He Darked The Sun") were recorded with her band The Corvettes while she was in NYC in July 1969.

Quote by heartbreaker:
Ah...not really. Bernie was in Linda's band The Corvettes during 1969, up to the point he joined the Flying Burrito Brothers that September. Her 1970 backing band, for Silk Purse, was Swampwater, a Cajun-influenced C&W/rock outfit led by John Beland.
