Quote by Dianna: Nope. It wouldn't be as fun. I would say, though, that Linda, for someone who is a long way from being an upscale clothes horse, has had more eclectic styles of wardrobe and accoutrements than almost any other female singer I can think of: the hoop earrings in her early years; the red dress during her Prisoner In Disguise tour; the Cub Scout outfit; and many others too numerous too mention. And yet through it all she still looks and is authentically herself. I know it's hard to compare a woman in her late 50's (Madonna) to a woman 31 years old (Linda). But in my opinion, Linda is just a better looking woman, younger or older, plain and simple. I understand what Madonna was and still is for a lot of people, but she just never did anything for me. But that's just me. We don't even have a photo of the lovely Linda in the outfit, which is what this thread is about. So here are a few of my favorites.

The whole thing about Linda's wearing a Cub Scout uniform versus Madonna's wearing one is one of many things that really separate the two of them, in my view. Linda's wearing of the uniform back in 1977 became one of her signature iconic looks largely, I think, by accident; she found what felt right on here, and, while she probably didn't intend it to happen that way, it also looked good on her. Madonna, I would guess, did it to provoke a reaction, maybe for a good cause (railing against the Boy Scouts' discriminatory practices against LGBT membership), but still something to provoke people in a way that no one else in the music business has been able to do in the way Madonna has been doing it since she came to prominence in 1983.
I guess the point I'm trying to make is that Madonna is arguably a publicity hound of the highest order, while Linda doesn't see the need to go after that publicity in such a blatant way.

And in a way I wish she would have been a little more blatant and direct. As much as I like Madonna and have pretty much the same views... I'd rather listen to what Linda has to say.. IMO She's a better story teller, verbal and more intelligent than Madge..

It looks like she has no backside in this photo. It does look as though Linda has no backside, although as small as she was back then, both in height (officially 5'2") and weight (100 pounds to maybe 120 pounds tops), it could've been that the lower portion of the cub scout uniform wasn't a good costume for prominently displaying Linda's bottom. But, Linda looked good in it and cub scouts probably got more recruits than they ever had in all of their existence when she wore the uniform. Of course, they had to tell and disappoint all those men who wanted to join they were "too old" to join the cub scouts! (And that Linda couldn't be their den mother because she wasn't a member either.)

Carrie Underwood has a similar build to younger Linda. Must be the long lean legs.

No, Linda pretty much had a flat ass if you look at other photos too. She was all arms and legs for quite a while, much like a child. No breasts, no butt...very pixie-ish. Part of her early appeal.

Jason, what I don't understand ... why the need to bash one person in order to build another up? This is a Linda forum dedicated to her for the fans (us) I notice many forget that there are other artists people on this forum like/ enjoy. It baffles the hell out of me how someone would get offended for something they wrote in an earlier post. Wasn't very nice what you said about the Madonna photo (I can't stand to look at it) You could have left that comment out.

I have always maintained that Linda looks beautiful in what I feel is a completely natural way, regardless of her choice of clothes. She is her own woman, and doesn't need to be somebody she knows she's not and never will be (Madonna, especially). With her dark, dusky looks being the result of her Southwestern background, she really didn't need to do much more than get onstage, even with all her genuine nervousness at appearing in front of thousands of fans every time, and knock songs out of the ballpark. To me, that's really the crux of this particular matter.

For me it was always about her adorable personality and "realness." Even a grumpy old woman (or man for that matter)can have a personality to make them special people. Linda's cute face seemed to stick with her. Typically being a cute kid doesn't translate well with age appearance wise and Linda is the exception I think.
I always remember a conversation I heard on NPR decades ago when the talk was about beauty. The talk was about how there are such differences amongst nearby countries non-the-less continents. Some wise woman said "everyone is beautiful somewhere." America can be difficult for the young because of our melting pot which has one real standard of beauty that cannot possibly be met by most ethnic youth here. That may be why so many young girls struggle today. But if you followed their blood line back to their country of origin chances are they would be judged quite differently in regards to looks.
So everyone is beautiful somewhere...male or female, old or young.

I guess the point I'm trying to make is that Madonna is arguably a publicity hound of the highest order, while Linda doesn't see the need to go after that publicity in such a blatant way. Linda didn't have to seek publicity, it came to her naturally because of her talent mostly, and her looks. It's the lesser talents who constantly flash their body parts and create drama to stay in the public eye. It's the only way they can sell the crap they produce. I wonder if Linda shortened the pants on that Scout uniform, or if that was the length of them back then. The uniform Madonna is wearing looks so dorky because the pants are long. Madonna's legs are meh... Linda has really good legs.

I would give Madonna the benefit of the doubt. I am sure Linda would love to have Madonna's body, it is actually a killer body and Madonna has worked hard to keep it in shape. I also think her wearing that scout uniform was a nod to Linda Ronstadt whose shoulders she and other female artists came to stand on. I don't think I have ever heard Madonna say a negative word about Linda when she could have as she was "thee" act among young girls and women for the better part of the 80's. She took on a role that Linda has always been reluctant to take on so in a sense she fulfilled a need at that space in time. Madonna is Madonna. Love her or hate her. She has put out some good music and was quite a unique and "original" in my opinion. I don't think it is a good thing to compare and contrast different artists as they all strive for their own niche while borrowing freely from others they admire. It is however a natural thing to do, almost protective in a sense on fans parts. Linda was also one of a kind and most appealing to those in my generation.

ha ha.. well in all fairness Madonna is in her late 50's.. That's a pretty recent photo. Linda wore it back in her early 30's and yes the suit becomes her. On the flip side. I don't think Linda could ever pull off this look either. lol

She wore it the first time I saw her in concert. 1977, University of Iowa. Awesome. Linda wears that uniform, while the uniform wears Madonna. Linda made it look sexy. Madonna just looks awkward in it. I saw Linda wear the Cub Scout uniform during her 1977 dates at the Universal Amphitheatre. There are many, many photos of Linda in the uniform on a concert stage in “Still Within the Sound of My Voice.” I saw her in it with my own eyes.

Here's an interesting tidbit that I found on YouTube regarding Linda and the Cub Scout uniform she wore for concerts during her "Simple Dreams" tour in 1977. This is from Casey Kasem's American Top 40 from October 22, 1977. Linda's "Blue Bayou" was #32 that week. In her memoir, Linda said that she bought the uniform at a surplus store in Greenwich Village in New York, while shopping with her friend Nicolette Larson. They were looking for clothes they could wear onstage. In fact they both bought Cub Scout uniforms, among many other things. But Casey tells the story of how Linda got the Cub Scout uniform, which came from Bob Hilburn, pop music critic and music editor of the Los Angeles Times. According to him, Linda bought the uniform in a Cleveland department store. But she had to con a salesman to get it, because ordinarily you have to show a Cub Scout membership card to buy any part of the uniform. She convinced the salesman to sell it to her by telling him that she was buying the uniform for her son back in California. So Linda was wearing the uniform without authorization, which is strictly against regulations. I don't know if the story is actually true. I had never heard of this until now. There were a lot exaggerations and lies told about her by the press back then. Not that this is anything bad.......I just thought it was interesting and kind of cool to hear this. Whether it's true or not......doesn't matter to me. Personally, I would believe Linda before I would believe anyone else. The story about Linda begins at 6:03

Hi, watched Linda's special on CNN last night. I was a buyer at May Company Cleveland Ohio in the 1970's. When I saw the cub scout uniform on TV I told my wife I remembered it. They came to the Boys department on the second floor. May Co was just off public square in Cleveland. I still live here. I was walking across the sales floor headed to my office. I was called over to the register and told that a customer wanted to buy some scout clothing without the proper ID. I was introduced and told the clerk to go ahead and sell it. If you look a the original sales ticket you would see my signature as approving the sale. It a true story as I was there. I am so sorry that Linda is so sick. Thanks, Gregg Flagg

It is probable she bought more than one Cub Scout uniform Likely the first was bought at an NYC surplus store with Nicolette. Perhaps a replacement one or extra was the one purchased in Cleveland.

Linda looked like a cub scout leader wearing a genuine uniform. She is only 5' 2", so small teen size anyway.
I am sure she had more than 1 uniform, 2 very likely.

Madonna sexed-up/sexualised herself as an icon, copied by many others since. Lots of singing jailbait since.
Linda was sexy, and knew it, but was only concerned with her singing. She dressed for the most part practically, to look attractive & counter her own self-aware shyness in front of crowds.

Given the patches on it, like arrowheads and troop number, I'm guessing it's a thrift store purchase.

As Rick said about seeing her in the Cub Scout outfit in LA at the Universal Amphitheater...
Well, I just couldn't resist posting this u tube of the superb quality Mike Millard Audience tape of the entire OCT 3, 1977 Universal Amph show.
( Holy Cow!) is the youtube channel that uploaded it......(time is 1:16:02)......v=L8gwJhyfJ28
***You will notice that whoever made the cover artwork for this particular youtube audio presentation, did a nice album cover photo of Linda in the Cub Scout uniform.
eddiejinnj & Rick and others here on Ronstadt proboards, I do understand that this concert recording is likely posted multiple times in other dedicated threads here, but I couldn't resist because the youtube cover photo is of Linda in the Cub Scout Uniform and it is a nicely done "album jacket presentation". You cannot have too many postings of this great Linda show among the different threads here because it is such a quality recording that rivals many FM stereo radio concert broadcasts. You have done a tremendous job in providing everyone in the world details, context and trivia about Linda's great body of work spanning her entire career in this little mini Library of Congress, or perhaps this Library of Linda. That is beyond just being really cool because it is a treasure trove certainly for those fans that may have been born too late to have seen her and purchased her records when she was both the First Lady of The State of California and a big time star selling lots of concert tickets. We old folks have the records and the ticket stubs and so many great memories of seeing Linda Ronstadt in concert. I did see photographs of the Cub Scout outfit back in the day, almost as much as the famous People magazine photos. The only costume outfit that I ever saw her wearing at a concert that I attended was a Cheer Leader outfit with the letter P on the front (NOV 14th 1982 2ND SHOW...the 10:30pm show at the Fox Theatre in ATLANTA 11-14-82 2nd show)
OCT 3, 1977 UNIVERSAL AMPHITHEATER Los Angeles entire concert......Millard tape
