I've decided to relisten to every Bonnie Raitt album chronologically. So in the last three days I have listened to these four:
Bonnie Raitt (1971) too ragged for my taste
Give It Up (1972) slightly less ragged
Takin My Time (1973) perfect amount of polish- my favorite female vocalist album of 1973
Streetlights (1974) And they said Linda was too slick- this album is superslick. And has very little energy except for Bonnie's disco tune "You Got To Be Ready For Love."

I am continuing my Bonnie Raitt complete album listening.
Home Plate (1975) Strong album, but the background vocalists could stand down a bit. I think Creem Magazine referred to them as the Mormon Tabernacle Choir. I could never understand why Bonnie would record Your Sweet and Shiny Eyes. But I used to love that oddball song and still do. The J D Souther song Run Like a Thief is another favorite. Every song is good- I'm Blowing Away (redone later by Ronstadt as Blowing Away), Sugar Mama.
Sweet Forgiveness (1977) Horrible cover, but her most popular album at the time. She perfected the Bonnie Raitt sound. Still, my favorites are the ballads, Two Lives, Louise (previously sung by the Ronstadt), and Karla Bonoff's Home.

Classically oriented today:
Mozart: LAUT VERKUNDE UNSRE FREUDE, K. 623--Hans Peter Blochwitz (tenor); Andreas Schmidt (bass-baritone); Men of the Leipzig Radio Choir; Dresden State Orchestra/PETER SCHREIER
This was one of the last things that Mozart completed, during the final four months of his all-too-short time on this planet in 1791. It is known as the "Little Masonic Cantata", because the composer was a member of the Freemasons' Vienna chapter from 1784 to his passing on December 5, 1791. The recording of this dates from 1983.
Vaughan-Williams: FIVE VARIANTS OF 'DIVES AND LAZARUS'--Utah Symphony Orchestra/MAURICE ABRAVANEL
This is one of the 20th century English composer Ralph Vaughan-Williams' many pastoral works, based on an English folk song with roots in the Bible. Scored for strings and harp, it is among his most popular works, with this Utah Symphony recording dating back to 1968.

I keep coming back to this, this week. Of course I'm old enough to remember it being a hit and Gilbert made some great records. He was an English peculiarity although I do believe this was a hit in the States. It always struck me that his deeply personal tunes were not comfortable being hit records or performed for tv audiences, especially Alone Again, it is painfully personal and moving, with the kicker being the final verse about his parents, it's just so sad. But as with Jackson and For A Dancer, there has to be something therapuetic in performance, of course James Taylor made a kind of barbed comment about Fire and Rain in one of his later songs. It must be crushing for people to always want to hear this deeply personal music, maybe. Anyway, with Alone Again, my short Gilbert Playlist insludes We Will, Nothing Rhymed and Why Oh Why Oh Why, his four most affecting songs.
