You mentioned Linda Ronstadt just now. I heard... this song, 'Nightman,' did you write that for her?JOHN STEWART: Yeah, I did. I hadn't seen Linda in about seven years and when Russ was doing the album he was also doing Linda Ronstadt's album. He said, "You oughta come down. Linda would like to see you and hear what she's doing." When I went down to the studio Linda said, "Gee, I really was excited about your hit, 'Gold.' I didn't know it was you when I heard it on the radio. I called Wendy Waldman and said, 'There's this great record on the radio, we've gotta write a song like it.'" I said, "Well, it's just the old minor shuffle. Would you like one?" She said, "Yeah, would you write one for me?"
At that time she was doing a lot of new wave kind of songs that she heard from a guy named Mark Goldenberg. A good songwriter, he's with a group called The Cretones. She had gone to The Roxy and seen them there and had really been knocked out. It had given her new inspiration for her own music, and it gave her new energy that she was really wanting to have. So I wrote a song about a girl who goes down, in this case, to The Troubadour and sees this band called The Nightman. She heard the song and said, "John, I love it, I think it's a hit, but I don't want to do it. But you should do it, it's great." The demo I made for it is the song on the album and I just beefed it up a bit. I played it for Al Coury. I said, "Al, I wrote this song for Linda and I don't know if I should do it." He said, "If you don't do it I'll break both your arms."

I think "Nightman" sounded to much like "Gold", different words but too similar to "Gold" with the exact beat. Linda recording "Nightman" in 1980 after "Gold" was such a big hit on radio in 1979 would have been a bit too much.

Growing up on a ranch outside Tuscon, Arizona, Linda Ronstadt always knew she wanted to be a singer. Her musical family played and listened to a wide range of styles, including opera, classical and Mexican folk music. Ronstadt landed her first recording contract as a teenager and in 1974, released “Heart Like a Wheel,” a mix of oldies covers and contemporary songs like “You’re No Good” and “When Will I Be Loved.” The album hit number one and has never been out of print in 40 years. Ronstadt went on to sell more than 100 million records. But last year, she announced that a Parkinson’s diagnosis had forced her to stop singing. Diane talks with Rock and Roll Hall-of-Famer Linda Ronstadt on her career in music and her life today.

I created this Spotify playlist of Linda songs next to their original versions by the original artists. I think you''ll find it interesting --just to read even if you don't listen. 59 originals. 58 Linda versions. NB two songs are not really covers -- I cheated a tiny bit. See if you can figure out which ones. I tried to pick the earliest original versions but in some cases, I'm still not completely sure. Would love to hear any corrections. And please follow the playlist if you like:

Map Shows Best-Selling Artist Born in Each StateBY JEREMY BURCHARD4 MONTHS www.wideopencountry.com/map-best-selling-artist/
This cool map shows the best-selling artist born in each state, and while some seem obvious (like Oklahoma), others may not be as clear-cut as you think.
But one thing's for sure: country music represents quite well.
Also, Idaho, Montana and Wyoming all need to up their game a bit. Though maybe that's not too fair, considering all three states combine for fewer people than the Texas hill country combined. The odds of those states birthing a major money-making artist just isn't great to begin with.
It's important to note, this map covers people who were born in the state. Even if they moved. Or if its a band, the band was "born" in the state. That's why Aerosmith hails from Vermont, though Steven Tyler hails from New York City.
Though you may think Beyonce reigns as Texas' most popular artist currently, George Strait takes the title for best-selling artist from the state. And in fact, the Dixie Chicks usurp Beyonce's 17 million-plus album sales. Though if you include her time with Destiny's Child, Beyonce wins by a few million.
Surprisingly, Tennessee's best-selling artist isn't a country musician. Or at least not primarily one. Though she did dabble in country, Tina Turner rose to superstardom as a soul-pop wonder.
READ MORE: Map Shows Highest and Lowest Paying Jobs in Every State
The Eagles are kings of California. Their rock/country crossover sound established them as one of the best-selling acts of all time. But Washington? That's Kenny G territory, baby. No trampling his smooth sax sounds.
And it's nice to see Dwight Yoakam representing in Kentucky (yep, even beating out Billy Ray Cyrus). All in all, artists with country ties take nearly 15 states.
The map comes from Redditor famicon3, who used data from Wikipedia to compile the whole thing.

It might be close, but I would think, from Tennessee, that Dolly Parton has sold more records than Tina Turner. Tina did have that one huge album in the 1980s that might push her slightly ahead of Dolly.
What about Justin Timberlake?

And would we consider Different Drum a cover song? Sure it had been recorded previously, but it was not a hit and was not well known.
Of course, the meaning of cover version has changed over the years. It originally was a version rushed out to release to best another concurrent version in the marketplace (Pat Boone vs Fats Domino).
Now, it pretty much means any subsequent version of a song other than the original. In Linda's case, sometimes her original recordings are called cover versions, even though hers was released first and the songwriter later recorded the song. In that case, wouldn't the original songwriter actually have the cover version?
For example, Someone To Lay Down Beside Me, a Linda original recorded the following year by the songwriter Karla Bonoff, who realistically speaking, got that record deal because of her success writing those three songs for Linda. Also, Faithless Love, recorded in 1974 by Linda Ronstadt, followed in 1975 by J D Souther's version.

I love the best selling ARTIST map (I love maps), but I would have to disagree about Eagles and California (just finished reading one of the group's biographies to see how often Linda is mentioned - LOTS). If you believe Frey and Henley (that THEY were really the Eagles), and the tenent of the map, Eagles should be Michigan or Texas (knocking out Madonna or Strait). Nice to see Nicolette and JT listed, artists with Linda connections. And wonder how far behind Stevie Nicks is in Arizona from Linda.

Linda is well over 100 million as a solo act. Probably more if they were counted correctly.
Stevie Nicks has sold a certified 10,500,000 albums in the US alone and approximately 30 million records worldwide.
Fleetwood Mac A grand total of 17 studio albums for Fleetwood Mac with a total of 84,55 million units sold. Of course, Rumours looks like the absolute juggernaut of their catalog with a terrific 35,5 million albums sold. Considering this number, their overall total doesn’t look that big but we need to highlight the band first nine albums weren’t major sellers, they ended stepping up to stardom with their eponymous tenth album in 1975. Plus, one must mention late 60s was mostly a period of single sales, hurting the pure album sales relevance. chartmasters.org/2016/10/cspc-fleetwood-mac-popularity-analysis/19/
Frankly, there are several on that map I have never heard of but that says more about me than them I am sure.

20 Cover Versions of Classic Songs That Improve on the OriginalsFrom Robert Wyatt and the Monkees to Whitney Houston and . . . Robert Wyatt, here are 20 revelatory takes on classic tunes to surprise and delight even the most ardent music snobs.
BY GLENN KENNY NOVEMBER 26, 2015
It can start with a Justin Bieber joke.
The Internet may be revenue boondoggle for plenty of worthy musicians, and that sucks, but it does make sharing enthusiasms and discoveries a lot easier. A little while back I was cracking wise on the subject of Justin and a pal remarked that the tune I seemed to be humming, by his lights, was “I’m a Believer,” or rather “I’m a Belieber.” To which I responded that, as long as it was the Robert Wyatt version, it was O.K. with me. My buddy hadn’t heard that version, and once he found it online, he checked it out and pronounced it “magical,” ’cause it is.
And so it begins.
What follows is a highly subjective gallery/mixtape of cover versions that top the originals. They’re not necessarily inherently superior, but they do give the songs a dimension—sometimes artistic, sometimes commercial, sometimes highly eccentric—that you don’t find in the originals. A couple of the unavoidable usual suspects are here, but mainly this list aims to surprise. BONUS TRACKS22. “Tumbling Dice” (Composed by Mick Jagger and Keith Richards; first performed by the Rolling Stones; covered by Linda Ronstadt.)“That’s my favorite Rolling Stones song,” my wife said to me the other morning. “If you put the Linda Ronstadt version on your ‘best covers’ list, there’s gonna be trouble.”
“But, honey,” I replied, “according to Robert Christgau, the live version she does of the song on the soundtrack to FM ‘is so passionate and revelatory that it leaps out of its context and stomps all over the Rolling Stones!’”
You be the judge! Anyway, Keith Richards can’t have completely disapproved, as he later recruited guitarist Waddy Wachtel for his own solo band, the X-Pensive Winos.www.vanityfair.com/culture/2015/11/20-cover-versions-of-classic-songs-better-than-originals50 Cover Songs Way Better Than the OriginalIN FACT, YOU PROBABLY THOUGHT THESE WERE THE ORIGINAL.
When you hear the lyrics, “I fought the law and the law won,” which artist comes to mind?
If you’re musically inclined, a certain English punk-rock band likely pops into your head. Or what about the crunchy guitar riffs and raw power of “American Woman?” That particular permanently be-spectacled rock star is instantly recognizable. What about “Somewhere Over the Rainbow?” Strummed ukulele chords and the crooning vocals of a Hawaiian pop star. See: I don’t even have to mention the musicians behind these tunes. They’re (both the songs and the rockers) recognized the world over.
Well, get this: none of them are original works; they’re just extreme versions of the best cover songs of all time.
Yes, when it comes to music, first is not always best. Often, the original rendition is merely the first draft, a starting-gun inspiration for other singers and songwriters to take a good song and make it great. Herein, you’ll find 50 such examples of the world’s best cover songs. So listen on, and see how many you knew were cover songs. And for more great music, check out Every Song of the Summer for the Past 50 Years.
50. “You’re No Good” by Linda Ronstadt (originally by Dee Dee Warwick) "You're No Good" by Linda Ronstadt - best cover songs
One of the most prolific hit-makers of the 1970s, 11-time Grammy winner Linda Ronstadt gives this someone-done-me-wrong song a sinister edge as she weaves through her many moods, supported by Motown-like backup vocals. Many have recorded Dee Dee Warwick’s poppy jingle, but none come close to Ronstadt’s, a number one chart-topper in February 1975.

Hermosa Beach's ninth mural, "Beatnik Alley,' to be unveiled on Oct. 23, is not without controversyMichael Hixon Oct 16, 2019 tbrnews.com/entertainment/arts/hermosa-beach-s-ninth-mural-beatnik-alley-to-be-unveiled/article_c28964b2-eed1-11e9-b230-83016a062da8.html

Before doing the research for Hermosa Beach's ninth mural, artist Timothy Robert Smith said he knew more about the punk rock scene than he did about the city's counterculture roots.
But, after extensive research for his latest project on the side wall of Watermans on Pier Plaza, Smith said, he's learned a lot about Hermosa's bohemian past.
Smith's mural "Beatnik Alley" merges three landmarks in the city's history—the Insomniac coffeehouse, Either/Or Bookstore and the Lighthouse jazz club—into "one mythical place."
It's a spot where a young Miles Davis performs at the same time Leonard Wibberley is writing his latest novel.
"Beatnik Alley" will be unveiled at a free event Wednesday, Oct. 23, at 6 p.m. A reception at 6:30 p.m. will follow at Watermans as a fundraiser for the Hermosa Beach Murals Project. Tickets start at $80.
Smith, from Dana Point, describes his work as multi-dimensionalism, an art form which connects events through time, but focuses on one cinematic frame.
“It’s kind of looking through the eyes of yourself, your neighbor, the person across the street you never met, all at the same time," said Smith, who received help from his wife Yuki Toy on the original sketches for the mural.
"It’s similar to the idea of cubism, but I explore the same ideas in a more realistic way,” said the artist. “It's meant to have a lot of secrets where you spend... time figuring out what’s going on."
What's obvious in the mural are depictions of:
Young Linda Ronstadt as a waitress at the Insomniac before she become a singing star Folk singer Ramblin’ Jack Elliott who performed at Insomniac Legendary trumpeter Dizzy Gillespie Howard Rumsey, who helped create a hub for West Coast jazz in 1949 with his Lighthouse All-Stars Gloria Cadena, who still books jazz at the Lighthouse Controversy over reputations
But purposely omitted from the mural are writers Jack Kerouac, Charles Bukowski and Allen Ginsberg.
Kerouac did not have a significant local connection, and mural organizers tried, but failed to get permission to use Bukowski's image from his ex-wife who lives in San Pedro, according to Smith.
An image of Ginsberg, one of the best known writers of the Beat Generation, had been included in the mural. He was depicted reading his best known work "Howl" at the Insomniac.
But, Steve Izant, president of the Mural Project's board, said organizers received complaints after people began researching Ginsberg in Wikipedia.
According to Wikipedia, Ginsberg was strongly anti-war, he was out as a gay man and he was a Communist.
But his Wikipedia entry also documents Ginsberg's association with the North American Man/Boy Love Association, a group which worked to abolish age-of-consent laws that criminalized sexual involvement with minors.
“I don’t think he’s the kind of guy that I would want to have a beer with, but in his own right he was prominent,” Izant said of Ginsberg.
Stories on why Ginsberg joined NAMBLA vary, from an act of protest as a violation of his First Amendment rights by the FBI to those who believe he actually might have been a pedophile.
“(Being a) pedophile is a classic thing that it's just not something you can intelligently debate in public society,” Izant said. “Although we think he was representative of the Beat Generation, we clearly understand some of the public's concern and our murals are public murals. There has to be some sensitivity and selection there.”
Izant said the board also felt they needed to be sensitive and supportive to Watermans. So they approached Smith about removing Ginsberg from the mural.
“If there’s some looming controversy about some guy that people identify as a pedophile, whether he is or not, having that there is really distracts from any theme that I’m trying to express,” Smith said. “There’s also the risk that somebody would tag it with the word pedophile. I don’t want to have to constantly worry about that.”
Ginsberg was replaced by Ramblin’ Jack Elliott. They also added Bob Hare, the founder of Insomniac, who “should have been there in the first place,” according to Izant.
Smith added the white bearded man depicted in the mural is not Ginsberg, but Leonard Wibberley, who published under the name of Patrick O'Connor and was the prolific author of “The Mouse That Roared.”
Gearing up for 10
Founded by Chuck Sheldon in 2009, the Hermosa Beach Murals Project's goal is to fund 10 murals in 10 years. Previous murals have depicted everything from beach volleyball culture to last year's ode to punk music.
The Murals Project is privately funded. According to Izant, last year's mural cost approximately $26,000 and they need to raise money for the 10th and final mural in 2020.
“We immediately start worrying about next year... it's 10 and then we disband,” Izant said.
The reception at Watermans, which also includes sale of giclees of Smith's work, goes completely to fundraise for next year's mural, which theme has not been chosen.
Pre-sale prices are $80 per person or $140 for a couple. Prices at the evening of the event will be $100 per person or $170 per couple.
Watermans, located at 22 Pier Ave., will be serving appetizers and two free drink tickets with each ticket.

Mural depicting Linda Ronstadt and Allen Ginsberg brings the Beat Generation back to Hermosa Beach By Lisa Jacobs Sep 12, 2019 tbrnews.com/news/mural-depicting-linda-ronstadt-and-allen-ginsberg-brings-the-beat/article_1d8ec4b4-d583-11e9-b1ab-37caccfad3e4.html
There are some beatniks being brought back to life in an alleyway in Hermosa Beach.
Dana Point artist Timothy Robert Smith is hard at work painting the west facing wall of Waterman's restaurant at 22 Pier Avenue.
His interpretation of the 1950 and 1960s counterculture movement in literature, music and the arts is the ninth installment in Hermosa Beach's mission to adorn the city with 10 murals in as many years.
So far, Smith has painted out poet Allen Ginsberg, one of the fathers of the Beat Generation, and a young Linda Ronstadt. The beatnik poet read his counterculture work "Howl" in the late 1950s at Hermosa's Insomniac coffeehouse—located at the time right across from jazz club The Lighthouse Cafe. Ronstadt was a waitress and a scuffling singer at the joint, which was one of the few Los Angeles area coffeehouses open until 3 a.m.
Smith continues to bring other historic venues and beatnik characters to life such as Either/Or Bookstore and Jack Kerouac ("On the Road") and William Burroughs ("Naked Lunch").
The mural's official unveiling and fundraiser reception with the artist is at Waterman's Surfhouse at 22 Pier Ave. on Oct. 23 at 6 p.m. For tickets, visit hermosamurals.org/mural--9-beatnik-alley.html

Weird how some artists come up with their own renditions or in the case it is a beautiful version of the photo of Linda sitting in her solarium I believe. The sun came through the window so she was slightly squinting. eddiejinnj

Linda Ronstadt, 67, Named the No. 1 Female Singer for the Decade of the ’70s by Cash Box Magazine, Says She Has Parkinson’s Disease and Can No Longer SingAug 24, 2013 • Post A Comment www.tvweek.com/tvbizwire/2013/08/linda-ronstadt-67-named-the-no/
“Legendary singer Linda Ronstadt, 67, told AARP that she ‘can’t sing a note’ because she suffers from Parkinson’s disease,” the AARP reveals in an exclusive story on its website. [AARP is now the official name of the organization formerly known as the American Association of Retired Persons.]
The story continues, “Diagnosed eight months ago, Ronstadt began to show symptoms as long as eight years ago. But she ascribed her inability to sing to a tick bite (‘my health has never recovered since then’), and believed the shaking in her hands resulted from shoulder surgery.”
Ronstadt told AARP music writer Alanna Nash, “I couldn’t sing, and I couldn’t figure out why. I knew it was mechanical. I knew it had to do with the muscles, but I thought it might have also had something to do with the tick disease that I had. And it didn’t occur to me to go to a neurologist. I think I’ve had it for seven or eight years already, because of the symptoms that I’ve had. Then I had a shoulder operation, so I thought that’s why my hands were trembling.”
Ronstadt continued, “Parkinson’s is very hard to diagnose, so when I finally went to a neurologist and he said, ‘Oh, you have Parkinson’s disease,’ I was completely shocked. I wouldn’t have suspected that in a million, billion years. No one can sing with Parkinson’s disease. No matter how hard you try.”
The story adds: “Ronstadt walks with the aid of poles when on uneven ground, and uses a wheelchair when she travels.”
Ronstadt, one of the bestselling female singers of all time, was named the top female singer for the decade of the 1970s by the music trade publication Cash Box.
Known for singing beautiful ballads and for having perfect pitch, here are some facts about Ronstadt that were once compiled in an article for Goldmine by Phil Marder:
● She has earned 11 Grammys, two Academy Of Country Music awards, an Emmy and an American Latino Media Arts award, and she has received Tony and Golden Globe nominations. ● She ranked as the No. 1 female singles seller in 1975 and 1977. ● Combining albums and singles, she is one of the highest-ranking artists in the history of recorded music. ● All told, she has posted 38 singles on the Billboard Hot 100, reaching the top 10 on 10 different occasions, No. 2 three times and the top spot once. On the Billboard top album charts, she has 36 entries, including 10 that reached the top 10 and three that hit No. 1. ● She has reached the UK top 40 with five albums and three singles, including a No. 2 single in 1989. ● Between 1969 and 1994 she has had 20 singles reach the Canadian top 40, including two that peaked at No. 2 and two that reached No. 1, and nine top 20 LPs, including the “Trio” album, which hit No. 4, and “Simple Dreams,” which topped the Canadian charts. ● On the country charts, she has had solo albums and a single reach No. 1 in addition to a No. 1 collaboration with Dolly Parton and Emmylou Harris. ● She is considered the first female solo artist popular enough to pack large concert arenas.
Here are two videos from YouTube that show off Ronstadt’s talent. If you are too young to know her work, please watch them. She’s an extraordinary singer. The first video is her rendition of The Eagles’ “Desperado,” live, in a 1977 concert.
Here’s the second video. It’s a 1999 live duet with Emmylou Harris from the “Today” show of Linda Thompson’s “Telling Me Lies.” (Ronstadt is the brunette.)
ONE COMMENT What Is Taking So Long? September 10, 2013 at 20:28 pm, Reply It’s 2013, and the great Linda Ronstadt is still not in the Rock ‘n Roll Hall of Fame. Neither are Stevie Nicks (solo career), Pat Benatar, Joan Jett or Carly Simon.

Linda Ronstadt Still As Bold and Gutsy as Ever - New Doc Out Today1,860 views•Sep 6, 2019
Rock History Music 43.1K subscribers Linda Ronstadt Is Still As Bold and Gutsy as Ever. September 6, 2019 – In a great new interview with the New York Times, the singer proved that even though she lost her singing voice to Parkinson's she still has much to say. Asked why she sang in the first place the 73-year old said, “For the same reasons birds do,” she says. “For a mate, to claim their territory or simply to give voice to being alive in the midst of a beautiful day. They sing so that coming generations won’t forget what the current generation endured, or dreamed, or delighted in.”
The 10-time Grammy winner who is the subject of a new documentary, “Linda Ronstadt: The Sound of My Voice,” said she allowed the filmmakers access since for her appreciation of their “The Times of Harvey Milk”: documentary. Milk was the first openly gay elected official in the history of California. She told the paper that it's weird having this big project come out that she didn't control.
The singer says racism has always been a tough subject for her and that at a young age kid in school were scolded for speaking Spanish, adding, My best friend Patty’s sister had darker skin, and she was forbidden from going into the public swimming pool. We were outraged. Arizona was pretty racist. I think it’s gotten worse.
Ronstadt was not a songwriter all her hits were written by others, she says back then, The world was full of so many good writers, and I liked the idea that I could interpret somebody else’s song. If a song told my story, I wanted to sing it. It wasn’t until 1980 that I had a clue about phrasing. And I’m still pretty clueless about it. Bonnie Raitt can sing like nothing is going to bother her. I can’t sound like that.
With the #metoo movement, the paper asked her if she was ever bothered by men to which she responded, I felt sexually harassed a lot of times. There was a guy on “The Johnny Cash Show” that came into my hotel room and took his clothes off. I scooted away and sat in the lobby until he left. He said, “If you play nice with me, I’ll make sure you get more TV shows from this.” But I hated performing on television! So, he had nothing to offer me! If I had been in a position where I was beholden to him, it would have been a different story.
As for the skimpy pictures from the '70s, Ronstadt says she didn't know any better. That she was naive adding that even back then her perfect attire was old baggy clothes. - by John Beaudin

Linda Ronstadt perfoming Long Long Time on Murray Roman's 1970 TV Show

Murray Roman BIRTH 8 Mar 1929 New York Mills, Oneida County, New York, USA DEATH 6 Nov 1973 (aged 44) Los Angeles County, California, USA
Murray Roman was a satirist, actor and Emmy Award winning writer (The Smothers Brothers' Comedy Hour). His death at age 44 in a car crash brought a promising career to a halt and in the decades since, his obscure~even~during~his~lifetime albums have become nearly impossible to track down. Fans of Lenny Bruce (Murray's idol) believe that had Murray lived, he would most likely be spoken of in the same breath as Lenny, or the also too soon gone Bill Hicks.
Murray spent the 1960s active in television as both an actor and writer; he won his writing Emmy in 1969. He worked steadily in episodic television, including "Batman", "That Girl", "The Monkees" and other programs, and was said to be Keith Moon's favorite comedian. Keith would help Murray secure a contract with Track Records, which also represented The Who. Murray also opened for The Doors, and was friends with Smothers Brothers fellow writer, Steve Martin.
Murray left only a handful of recordings behind, but they can be found shared among fans on Youtube, now. These include "Out Of Control" (which is regarded among his fans as Murray's freshman/still bordering on the hipness to come effort); "You Can't Beat People Up And Have Them Say I Love You", "Busted" and "Backtrack 13". His appearance in the classic Monkees episode "Fairytale" continues to bring him new fans.
Married three times and survived by family and many friends both in and out of the entertainment field, Murray Roman died in a car crash on November 6, 1973 on the Pacific Coast Highway.
