Well, at least, he can't contribute his opinion on future noms/winners by resigning. Whether people continue to go to see his movies is up to them. I don't think for arts sake that he should not be considered for future Oscars if his output is of excellence. in certain ways, Rock should have pressed charges, Smith plead guilty he gets a fair but just sentence. Paying the piper probably would make this go away faster have a just outcome and then move on. eddiejinfl Yes, it is up to the individual whether or not he or she will support Smith in future projects. As far as for art sake, I myself will not lose any sleep or miss out if I never see another one of his films again.. it's not going to affect my life either way.. he isn't the only actor IMO who can play these roles. IMO Chris Rock is to be applauded for his handling of the situation, as he is the victim. I also feel, the reason he didn't press charges is he could feel compassion and sorrow for Smith.. The problem I have with this is .. we tend to reward bad behavior.. I've seen it happen over and again, especially in politics... in my own country and elsewhere.. When people continue to turn the other way and make excuses for disgusting and vile behavior it does none of us any good.. JMO

Dianna, thank you for your responses. I agree with you that it seems that bad people do bad things and there are no consequences. It is very frustrating when people do not face consequences. A couple things came to light since I last posted. Variety magazine posted a story Will Smith Resigns From Academy Over Chris Rock Oscars Slap Backlash that has an interesting section -- The Academy later said it asked Smith to leave the ceremony and he refused. However, sources tell Variety that the organization’s leaders never formally requested he be ejected and producer Will Packer urged him to stay. During an appearance on GMA on Friday, Packer said that he said Smith should stay at the request of Rock — something Rock’s camp has denied. A friend told me that there was an article in the Los Angeles Times. He said: " I found what Wanda Sykes did to be touching. She found Chris Rock, who was visibly upset and crying "I'm sorry, I'm sorry" and she said "What are you apologizing for?" and Rock replied "This was supposed to be your night.." It just feels like Will Packer, who produced this year's Oscars, is talking out of both sides of his mouth. The Variety article says that "Will Packer urged him (Smith) to stay." Well, Packer wanted that moment of Will Smith going back onstage AFTER assaulting someone. Interesting that the people who represent Chris Rock are denying Mr. Packer's assertion that Chris Rock wanted Will Smith to stay. I will not watch "Saturday Night Live" tonight as I am just sure that it will make jokes about it. Already I have seen posts by "Weekend Update" co-anchor Michael Che defending Will Smith.

VARIETY: Academy Bans Will Smith From Oscars for 10 Years It does say in the article that the Academy does not have the "power" to rescind his Oscar win. Not sure I understand that. However, I just saw that people are withdrawing from projects to which he was attached and some studios are shelving plans to work with him.

Well, then this would be a first: someone wins an Academy Award; and then only two weeks go by before people stop wanting to work with him because he couldn't keep his hands to himself on live TV.
