There have been better versions of this besides Lady Gaga's (including Linda's [natch!]); but there have also been far worse. She at least didn't go over-the-top. It was one more than worthy for #46 (IMHO).

Whitney set the bar for all time. Every other singer, before or after, will be measured against her. Linda did ok. "And the rockets red glare" is harsh, she's yelling, but from "Oh say does that star spangled banner yet wave," she's on solid ground (especially on "wave").

From The Kennedy Center's Instagram account --
" Today from The National Symphony's 90th anniversary retrospective, a look back on Igor Stravinsky's arrangement of this national classic led by National Symphony Orchestra Music Director Gianandrea Noseda. The composer's unconventional dominant seventh chord led to police famously pressuring it off of the performance following its premiere, citing a law against "tampering" with national property. đł "

Yes, that was one of the more interesting arrangements of our National Anthem, by one of the titans of 20th century music--the same titan whose 1913 ballet score "The Rite Of Spring" created an actual riot at its premiere in Paris.
Quote by musedava re. Linda's 1977 version:
One of the reasons why she never liked performing in arenas or stadiums, but did so here because the Boys in Blue asked, and she accepted. Still, I do prefer her version the most, though Lady Gaga's at #46's inauguration wasn't chopped liver either (IMHO).

Here's a 'sporty' pre-Thanksgiving reminder:
Peter Asher had good news and bad news for Linda Ronstadt. The good news was that sheâd been invited to the first 1977 World Series game in Los Angeles. The bad newsâŚwell, let Linda tell it: âPeter came to me and said, âListen, all the Dodgers got together and they voted.â And then he looked at me, and he says, âYou know whatâs comingâŚâ And I thought [Linda re-creates her yipe-gasp], âThey want me to throw out the first ball!â â And now the bad news: âHe said, âThey want you to sing the National Anthem!â And I just went: âOh, God!â âCause itâs just the worst song in the world! Itâs a turkey. Who even knows the words?â Linda told Peter she didnât think she could do it. But then she thought about the beautiful blue Dodgers warm-up jacket theyâd sent her. âAnd finally I just couldnât say no, because I love the jacket.â Ronstadt had a tough time practicing the star-spangled turkey. âI couldnât play it on the guitar or anything. And I was so nervous. If theyâd asked me to pitch I would have been less nervous. And everybody was going, âOh, itâll be great, itâll be great!â Well, Peter didnât do any of that stuff.â Which brings us to the point of this belated sports report.

She says perilous night instead of perilous fight, correct? Whitney's version was pre-recorded, no? If so, it is not apples for apples really. It was Linda and Helen on the organ vs a lush arrangement. eddiejinnj

She did try and embellish the "glare" on the top if I remember hearing it right. She was saving the note. If she did is up to personal interpretation. eddiejinnj

I guess it was worth the effort to get the baseball jacket!
