This would make sense, of course, since Richard and Karen were the pride of Downey, as well as students at Cal State Long Beach. It is all too easy to dismiss them these days as everything that was allegedly "bland" about the 70s (IMHO).

After what we lived through in the 60's and early 70's we NEEDED as much bland and vanilla as we could get. I loved the Carpenters. Had all of their albums and listened non-stop in those days right into college. I recall a college field trip from Arizona to UCSD (California). About a dozen of us were on University van headed west and just after passing over the AzCa border an announcement came on the van radio "Karen Carpenter is dead!" We were all stunned and silent. That certainly hit home for me. Long live their music!!
