What I think was left unspoken in the Deadline article regarding Hair is that the original musical, besides being about Vietnam and the counterculture, is that it involved, how shall we say, a certain amount of people being "in the buff". It's rather strange to me that the execs at NBC either never knew or forgot this particular aspect, since that nudity was one of the things that made the musical such a big deal fifty-plus years ago.

broadway.news/2019/02/04/nbc-cancels-production-of-hair-live/ Erik, yes, that is true, however. I know people who saw the original and the nude scene is very short. “Hair” has been performed numerous times, including at The Hollywood Bowl, and I highly doubt there was nudity during the Bowl’s production. I think it’s a shame they canceled it.

I too had heard that the nude scene in Hair was brief. It's just that this fact got so overemphasized over time that people started to believe that it was the very first nude musical, just one more case of the lie being more colorful than the truth.
The fun thing, though, is that my mother and a close friend went to see that performance of Hair at the Bowl, and, according to them, everyone in the audience was singing "Aquarius" and "Let The Sunshine In", while it was actually raining.
