In many ways, I suppose Linda is still a perfectionist when it comes to looking back on her own career, of how she could do it better. It's a little disheartening to see her so (in my humble opinion) so excessively self-deprecating even to this day. I really don't think she should have ever been that hard on herself.
Still, it's preferable to being a totally self-absorbed narcissist.....

I gleaned two things from this interview. Things that we have discussed here in this Forum over the years it has been in existence.
1) There are things in the vaults. I think someone — Rhino executives? John Boylan ? Both? — is/are delving in to see what is there. So, now, we might be seeing official releases of material that was shelved;
2) Self-deprecating Linda (Just re-watch her interview on “Sunday Morning” on CBS) believes it must not be very good, which is why they chose not to release it in the first place. BUT, she has no control over whether it’s released or not. I wonder if Boylan is doing these releases as a way of giving her some income as she needs more care, medical attention. And with the spike in sales in some of her albums, Warner/Rhino have more incentive to release these “new” packages as a large number of people, present company excluded because we knew it all along, re-discover the thrill of Ronstadt.

But we've also discussed from the start that Linda does have a fairly blinkered view of her own art, whether in the studio or on the stage. I've always believed that an artist's real mettle is tested onstage, when they are always working without any net below them; and Linda's stage presence, with all of its supposed limitations, and her ability to move and galvanize a live audience play a huge part in her history.
Whether this leads to any further releases of live material from the vaults is anybody's guess. But this particular live album adds greatly to her legacy and, in my opinion, puts the lie to the notion that she didn't have an impact onstage.

She said in an interview not long ago that she has enough unreleased material, including many duets with Aaron Neville to put out several new albums but she didn't think that there was enough demand for them. I hope she sees the huge resurgence in popularity she's having on the charts today. Fans would definitely love to hear new songs from her.

John Boylan said he was trying to find the masters for the German concert. Then there is the FM movie concert footage where they must have filmed the whole 20 songs. That concert in the Summit must have been high quality. I just don't get why this stuff isn't done in a video format as well. Half the experience of Linda Ronstadt is watching her perform. She must have done some recording with JD Souther as well. Not everything from Trio has been released either. |
