Linda and Aaron did "The First Time......" as a duet on his album "To Make me Who I Am" from 1997. During that session, they also recorded "Please Remember Me." Good point, slide, re: people delving into Linda and Elvis' catalogs. eddiejinnj

Never thought Aaron Neville would sing that song strangely.

"Yesterday" would be good if Linda had sung it too, and definitely "Solitaire". I love the Carpenters version (& their "Desperado").

My picks:
Written by Jimmy Webb "Is There Love After You?" "I Don't Know How To Love You Anymore" "Earthbound" "Didn't We?"
"Do You Know Who I Am?" (written by Bobby Russell, and recorded by Elvis in 1969) "Without Love (There Is Nothing)" (much-covered R&B standard, by, among others, Elvis and Sir Tom Jones)
And I've voiced it many times, I really wished she and Trisha Yearwood could have gotten together for at least one song, possibly on one of Trisha's albums, especially if it were written by Nashville song mistress Matraca Berg, who has written many songs that Trisha has recorded, and one song, "Baby Walk On", that Linda herself recorded (for Feels Like Home).

I agree, Erik. I really hoped they would do at least one song together for a Trisha album or a compilation project; many of which Linda has done. eddiejinnj

I love Linda's cover of "Love Me Tender". Its one of my favourite LITUSA tracks, but wish a Spanish guitar had been used instead.

To add to all this, I think this is another one that Linda could have aced in one of two different ways. It is "Long Black Limousine", a C&W song written back in 1958 by Vern Stovall and Bobby George and recorded by tons of people, but somehow it was never much of a hit. It is about a long-lost love who leaves home to find fame and fortune, vowing to come back in a big fancy car. She does indeed...the only problem is that it's a hearse, and she is the victim of a traffic accident. Yes, it's morbid, but still....
Anyway, as I said, there are two ways that Linda could have conceiveably done this song:
The first is a very early (1962) folk/bluegrass recording by Glen Campbell, with the Green River Boys (which was produced by Nick Venet, who would produce Linda's very first album, with the Stone Poneys, in late 1966):
And second is this hugely memorable R&B-style version recorded by The King, Elvis; in fact, it was the first thing he recorded when he walked into Chips Moman's American Studios in Memphis in the early morning hours of January 12, 1969:

Re. "There Goes My Everything": Even though that's one of the most oft-covered songs anywhere, country or otherwise, yes, I think Linda could have conceivably done that.
There's also the 1954 Jimmie Crane/Al Jacobs classic "Hurt", which Roy Hamilton first had a hit with that year, followed in 1961 by Timi Yuro (hers hit #4)....and then there's Elvis' (a #28 hit in May 1976):

Have always thought John Bucchino's song "Sweet Dreams" is beautiful, and, lately, I've been imagining what Linda might have / could have done with it.

Re. "I Remember Everything" and Brandi Carlile: To be honest, Linda could certainly have found something in John Prine's catalog that would have suited her, especially back in the 1970's.
And as for Brandi--one of the more interesting parallels about her is that, at least at the start of her career, she had a penchant for wearing a Cub Scout uniform onstage, as Linda had done in 1977. It wouldn't be too much of a stretch to say (or a surprise to learn) that Linda also influenced her musically too.

So this is where my thread went Prefer Nancy Sinatra's cheekier version (& dancers!), but Loretta is more country. Linda could have done this song her way & sounded great too.

One of the most underrated song in Elvis' catalog is this 1964 R&B ballad "It Hurts Me", written by Charlie Daniels and Bob Johnston. It seems tailor-made for Linda as well (IMHO):

It Hurts Me would've been a good choice for Linda, especially when she was younger. I suspect however, her stubborness would've rejected fans suggesting songs or anyone from the record company or producer. That said, among the songs I would've asked Linda to consider:
This Bee Gees song leaned towards country and Barry Gibb said he and Maurice wrote the song thinking of Jim Reeves. Linda could've done a cool and clean country delivery on this song with the traditional country instruments.
Another country song, this time from Kenny Rogers with First Edition member Kin Vassy. Vassy actually had nothing to do with the writing of the song but Rogers gave Vassy half the credit for the piano arrangement heard at the beginning. Very generous of Rogers but years later, he tried to get Vassy's name off after giving Vassy $500. Vassy was trying to sell Rogers some songs but Rogers wasn't interested.
This was a song which was just perfect for Linda. The protagonist in the chorus sings Some man's tryin' to run my life, he don't know what he's askin' I'll be damned if he runs mine. I haven't listened to this song in a while so I may have the lyrics twisted, but given Linda's stubborness and independent streak, I could've seen her giving the guy the kiss off.

A couple of songs from country singer-songwriter Liz Anderson (mother of Lynn Anderson) would also have been a good fit during Linda's younger days:
Linda was a fan of Merle Haggard but it's surprising she only recorded his song Silver Wings with Earl Scruggs.
Liz Anderson's Strangers would've been a good country tune for Linda to have cut. Liz's second tune probably would've been more to Linda's liking:
A very uptempo country song for which Linda could've reworked in a country-rock arrangement. Despite Linda's protestations she was not a country singer and yes, she was, A lot of country songs Linda recorded had already been done to death by every country artist and their mother. And father. Liz's most covered country song was Strangers, and it seemed odd the Nashville artists who were part of the Nashville establishment didn't cover more of Liz's songs. They shopped for what were recent hits, including pop and rock songs. I don't want to say Liz was marginalized but she was kind of pushed to the side.
