The saga of the survivors of Uruguyan Air Force Flight 571, which crashed 12,000 feet high in the Andes on October 13, 1972, and came to an end only after two of their own trekked across monstrous summits and into Chile, is told in this 2009 History Channel documentary, I Am Alive: Surviving The Andes Plane Crash. Of the forty passengers and five crew members, only sixteen survived the 72 days of icy horror, which included forcing themselves to survive by eating the bodies of those who had perished:
This is a testament to the humanity of those who made it out, and dedicated as well to those who perished, told by the survivors themselves and various mountaineering and aeronautical specialists.
