Really terrible loss, for anyone who ever liked Shakespeare in general, and, of course, his offstage voice role as HAL in 2001.
But I would say that there has always been a misconception about HAL, in that this was not an inherently evil machine as some would make him/it out to be, but the victim of a programming conflict. This is not necessarily made clear in the film (though hints are dropped, if anyone pays close attention0, but is implied in the novel spawned from the film (and written by Arthur C. Clarke, who co-wrote the screenplay with Kubrick).
