I hope they got Spielberg's blessing to do this. It is, after all, his film, since he both directed it and wrote it.
It's kind of interesting that this trailer makes CE3K (as it is sometimes referred to) seem a bit scarier than it is. I'd be lying, however, if I didn't say that parts of it scared me a bit when I first saw it at the age of seven in late 1977.
But that's the thing about Spielberg. Alfred Hitchcock was among the many directors whose style influenced his, so certain elements of his films have elements of high suspense and terror--even E.T.

The original was pretty much perfect as it was - I don't see the sense in this, honestly..

I think they are pretty much releasing the original version of the movie, it appears from the trailer. Why they're doing it for only a single week, given its status in cinema history, however, is a bit weird.
But here's a little factoid about CE3K: Columbia Pictures (which Sony bought out back in the 1990s) allowed Spielberg a budget of $22 million, which was a considerable sum back in the late 1970s, to complete this big dream project of his. It was a huge risk, because of the fact that that studio was teetering on the edge of bankruptcy, and their studio chief, David Begelman, was a crook. And hell, some wag at the Wall Street Journal, noting the then-recent gargantuan success of STAR WARS, felt that CE3K was so inaccessible that it would be a "colossal flop".
Let's see here: $22 million to make the film; it needs to make $77 million to break even; it goes on to make $220 million. Now, I don't know about anyone else, but that doesn't sound like a colossal flop to me, folks!
