I haven't researched this church much but I am guessing it was incorporated for its members to be able to practice alternative therapies for disease and aging without violating any laws or at least to put its members out of reach from the long arm of the law. It also appears that they use cryogenics if they die before they reach immortality. Studies have shown that washing your produce can reduce the pesticide residue, but won’t eliminate all pesticides. The research team had set out to test how exposure to ambient scents impacts food choices, concluding that "encountering a cue in one sensory modality (olfaction) can compensate (or satisfy) desires related to another sensory modality (gustatory)" — or, in English, if you smell something long enough it satisfies your desire to taste it.
"Ambient scent can be a powerful tool to resist cravings for indulgent foods," said lead author Dr Dipayan Biswas, a marketing professor at the University of South Florida College of Business, in a statement.
"In fact, subtle sensory stimuli like scents can be more effective in influencing children's and adults' food choices than restrictive policies."

Study participants — in both laboratory and real-world settings, a school and supermarket — were exposed to a nebuliser that spritzed either the smell of "indulgent" foods (cookies and pizza) or "non-indulgent" foods (strawberries and apples).
Biswas found that exposure to the cookie scent lasting less than 30 seconds made participants desire a cookie.
But exposure longer than two minutes led them to choose strawberries instead. The effect was the same when participants smelled pizza — longer exposure nudged them to choose apples.
Before you sniff a piping-hot pizza box for two minutes in the hopes it will convince you to eat a slice or two less, remember there are better ways to overcome food cravings, and this is just one study. And that the research has a dark side: it confirms to restaurants they should offer a brief whiff of a tasty dessert to entice you to order it, for example.

THE HEALING EFFECTS OF THE STONE CIRCLES OF SOUTH AFRICA in Michaels Articles, News /by michael A scientific interpretation of how the stone circles and Adam’s Calendar may induce healing By Michael Telllinger – 24 July 2018
Since 2007, when I first stepped into some of the ancient stone circles in South Africa, I knew that we were facing something unique and extraordinary. I had no idea how my intuition would grow and expand.
Over the past decade I have taken several thousand people to the ruins and Adam’s Calendar. Almost everyone that visits me at the Stone Circle Museum, or takes a tour to the stone circle ruins, claims that they experience some kind of energetic episode. Especially in the Stone Circle Museum, where the concentration of stones is extremely intense.
Some people cannot take the intense energy in the room and leave as quickly as they enter, while others express a variety of feelings and emotions – ranging from euphoria, to nausea, tingling, spine chilling, twitching, dizziness and much more. Personally, I love it – it truly energises me to be in close proximity to the many ringing stones and TORUS stones. (Much more about the torus stone in future articles)
The same happens when we go to the actual sites on the mountains. Different stone circles have different effects on people. Some cannot stay inside for very long – while others want to lie down and sleep – and some sit and meditate for hours, lost in their own journeys.
REPORTS OF HEALING
Since 2010, many of the visitors have reported that they experienced healing in some way after their visit to the ruins. I have been told countless tales of what the people experienced and what healing they observed. A truly diverse list of health problems that were either alleviated to a certain extent, or even cured completely. From breathing, skin problems, headaches, muscular pain, back ache, blood pressure, anxiety, stress, and more.
But the most mind-blowing confirmation came from a friend in the USA – who attended more than one Sacred Sites Tour with me, who told me in confidence that she was totally cured from an advanced stage of cancer. She told me that I saved her life, because she arrived in South Africa thinking that it may be her last trip. Upon returning to the USA her cancer had retreated completely. She claims that it was a combination of the intense ENERGY of the ruins and Adam’s Calendar that caused her healing.
RESEARCH
In January 2018, I held my first Research Expedition, during which we discovered the spectacular fossils. BUT, we also did an ongoing series of vital body function measurements over a period of one full month. Taking readings before and after exposure to the ruins and Adam’s Calendar. Blood pressure; temperature; heart rate; blood flow; retinal response; and several other measurements.
The results were astounding. There is no doubt that exposure to the stone circles have a positive effect on the bodily functions which we measured over a 30-day period.
Is it possible that the Stone Circles and Adam’s Calendar can be used for HEALINIG.? And should we contemplate introducing deeper spiritual, meditation, healing & wellness journeys to the ruins?
I began to wonder how this unexpected phenomenon could be explained scientifically – so that everyone can truly grasp it and fully resonate with it. The key word here is RESONATE.
HOW THE STONE CIRCLES HEAL
From conducting many electronic measurements, we know that the stone circles are powerful energy generating devices. Each circle is a Cymatic pattern that represents the subtle Earth frequencies that rise from the surface at that point. The stone walls simply amplify the frequencies through the concentrated quartz/silica content, and create moving amplified sound frequencies and magnetic anomalies, that in turn create electro-magnetic fields emanating from the stone walls.
The ancient architects were very smart – they knew how to take the constant flow of subtle sound frequencies from the surface of the Earth – how to amplify it – and turn it into usable energy for all kinds of needs they may have had at the time.
RESONANCE & HARMONY
To attain unity and harmony in our lives and in the world, everything needs to be in perfect harmony and coherence, to function without breaking or falling into dissonance which we have called “dis-ease”. The reason why we get sick, is because we are in dis-ease with our environment, food, water, air, with life and the Earth itself.
Our reality, our physical world, and everything in creation, whether it is seen or unseen, is a consequence or harmonic resonance – where everything is manifested into physical form by its prime resonance frequency (Prime Directive – for Trekkies). This physical form is held in a coherent grid of source-code unity by constantly vibrating or resonating in harmony with everything else in creation.
Anything and everything that goes against the Prime Resonance Frequency of creation, will ultimately be destroyed by its own dissonance, and expelled from our reality or simply disappear. We can see this in our own lives every day. As soon as there is dissonance or dis-harmony, things break and fall apart. This was the technique used by Royal Rife when curing cancer patients in the 1930’s, by making dissonant cancerous cells in the bodies of his patients break up – and then be expelled by the normal bodily functions.
STONE CIRCLES – HARMONIOUS FREQUENCY AMPLIFIERS
The important realisation is that the stone circles act as amplifiers of subtle Earth frequencies, which are harmonic coherent fractals of Earth frequencies – all perfectly resonating with the Prime Resonant Frequency of the Earth.
By being exposed to the amplified frequencies of the stone circles, we are exposed to the coherent harmonic frequencies of Gaia (Mother Earth). All the cell of our bodies begin to vibrate and resonate in harmony with these natural Earth frequencies – or energies – and all the cells and organs of our body slowly start to come into coherence with the natural frequencies of Earth itself.
Any dissonant or dis-eased cells in our bodies are broken down and expelled. This is the simplest way to explain how the Stone Circles can heal us.
While we need to do much more ongoing observation and research, we have enough evidence that shows how we can use these ancient structures for the benefit of humanity in the present.

One of the most exciting and recurring effects of the ruins and Adam’s Calendar, are the deeply profound spiritual experiences and conscious awakenings that takes place. There are simply no words to describe this recurring phenomenon. Even people that have been fast asleep most of their lives undergo a shift in consciousness. Most likely because the ruins affect our DNA at the prime-resonance-frequency level. Sometimes the effects are felt immediately and other time there is a delayed reaction – but many people have reported these over the past decade. It's trendy to go low-carb these days, even no carb. And, yes, this can lead to quick weight loss.
But ditching carbs is tough to do over the long haul. For starters, you're swimming upstream. On average, adults in the U.S. get about 50 percent of their daily calories from carbohydrates. And, if you truly cut out all carbs, you'll have to give up fruits, vegetables, whole grains and beans — which are the building blocks of a healthy diet.
So, why do carbs get such a bad rap? Well, as we discuss in our new Life Kit podcast, a lot of us are choosing the wrong kind of carbs.
"We've known for decades that different foods affect the body differently," says Dr. David Ludwig. He's a professor of nutrition at the Harvard School of Public Health and the co-director of the New Balance Foundation Obesity Prevention Center Boston Children's Hospital.
So, let's compare two carbohydrate-rich foods. If you're shopping in the bread aisle, you can pick white bread or a whole-grain bread, maybe pumpernickel or rye. They may have about the same number of calories, but the whole grain has a lot more going for it.
"When you eat a whole-kernel, minimally processed grain ... they take a while to digest. Blood sugar rises relatively more gently. You produce less insulin calorie for calorie," Ludwig explains. Think of whole grains as slow carbs because of this slow digestion. (Other slow carbs include fruits, vegetables, beans and grains.)
Whole grains — which include everything from whole wheat to brown rice to steel-cut oats and farro — are also rich in fiber. A new study published in The Lancet finds that people who eat a diet rich in fiber and whole grains have a reduced risk of Type 2 diabetes, stroke, coronary heart disease and colorectal cancer. Here's what to visualize: When you eat whole grain wheat bread, you're getting everything that comes in the wheat kernel. This includes the fiber-rich bran. It also includes the germ, which is the embryo of the seed, so it contains everything that's needed to nurture new life. Think of wheat germ as a little packet of nutrients, including zinc, magnesium and Vitamin E.
But with white bread, all this good stuff has been stripped out during processing. All that's left is starch, which is one step away from turning to sugar in your body. "Refined starch is the hidden sugar," says Dr. Dariush Mozaffarian, dean of the nutrition school at Tufts University.
And it's not just white bread. Many of the packaged snacks we eat, such as pretzels and crackers, are often made from refined starch. So when you eat these foods, that starch can "slam into your bloodstream, raising blood sugar and insulin," Ludwig says. And this can send a signal to the body to store fat and leave you feeling hungry.
I've experienced this. I know if I eat a scone or chocolate croissant for breakfast, I'm hungry an hour later. But, if I eat an egg and a piece of whole grain toast, I'm set until lunch. That's because I'm getting plenty of fiber — which slows down digestion — as well as fat and protein that leave me feeling sated.
So I've cut back on refined carbs. And the science suggests this is the way to go. The authors of the latest Lancet study say their findings "provide convincing evidence for nutrition guidelines to focus on increasing dietary fiber and on replacing refined grains with whole grains." U.S. Dietary Guidelines recommend that at least half of your daily grain consumption should come from whole grains. But currently, most Americans under-consume whole grains and exceed the recommended limits on refined grains.
David Ludwig says it's time we "just get off the roller-coaster" — the cycle of spiking blood sugar and hunger that refined carbs can cause. He says aim to replace refined carbs with whole fruits (the fiber in them slows digestion), beans, nuts, a variety of healthy fats and plenty of protein.
So, what does that look like on our dinner plates? David Ludwig has teamed up with his wife, Dawn Ludwig, a professional chef. They've collaborated on cookbooks designed to help people eat smarter.
"I don't want anyone to feel deprived ... or that they have to give up anything," Dawn Ludwig says. "I want to meet people where they are."
Here's how she thinks about building a quick and easy dinner meal. Pick a protein, whether it's plant-based — such as tofu — or meat. Include some healthy fats, such as olive oil. Chop up some vegetables. "Then, have the wholegrain be the side dish," she says. To tie the meal together, try one of her sauce recipes below. "I do a lot of really simple five-minute sauces that I have in my fridge that I can pull out" for dinner, Ludwig says. She tosses all the ingredients for the sauces in Mason jars and mixes them in the jar with one of those stick-like immersion blender, so there's not much clean-up involved and they store well in the refrigerator.
And, here's one final tip for all of you who have a hard time turning down a baguette, croissant or warm basket of rolls: Eat them at the end of a meal.
Why? A small study published a few years back found that, compared with eating bread at the beginning of a meal, people who saved the rolls for the end had a 30 percent lower peak in blood sugar. Now, this may not have the same effect on everyone, but it suggests that timing matters.

Dawn Ludwig's 5-Minute Sauces
Cashew Balsamic Dressing
Prep time: 5 minutes. Makes about 1 cup.
2 1/2 tablespoons soy sauce 1 1/2 tablespoons balsamic vinegar 2 tablespoons water 1/2 cup neutral-tasting oil, such as high-oleic safflower or avocado oil 1/4 cup cashews
Place all the ingredients in a wide-mouthed mason jar or cup that will fit an immersion blender without splashing. Pulse a few times to blend until the cashews are in small pieces but still chunky. Place a lid on the jar. For best results, set aside for at least one hour to allow the flavors to develop. The dressing will keep in the refrigerator for one to two weeks.
Ginger Tahini Dressing
Prep time: 5 minutes. Makes about 1 cup.
1/4 cup tahini 2 tablespoons white miso paste 1 2-inch piece ginger, peeled and thinly sliced 2 teaspoons rice vinegar 1 teaspoon soy sauce 1/2 cup warm water
Place all the ingredients in a wide-mouth mason jar or cup that will fit an immersion blender without splashing. Blend, working the blender into the pieces of ginger until smooth. Add additional water as needed to reach the desired consistency. Place a lid on the jar. For best results, set aside for at least one hour to allow the flavors to develop. The dressing will keep in the refrigerator for one to two weeks.
Moroccan Sauce
Prep time: 7 minutes. Makes 2/3 to 3/4 cup.
1 2-inch piece fresh ginger, peeled and sliced into thin rounds 3 medium cloves garlic 1 3- to 4-inch piece fresh turmeric, peeled, or 1 teaspoon ground turmeric (optional) 2 teaspoons paprika 1 teaspoon ground cumin 1 teaspoon ground coriander 1/2 teaspoon ground cinnamon 1/4 teaspoon ground cloves Dash of freshly grated nutmeg 1/4 teaspoon ground white or black pepper 9 or 10 sprigs cilantro, stems and leaves coarsely chopped 1/4 cup extra-virgin olive oil 1/4 cup water 1/2 teaspoon salt Dash of cayenne pepper, or to taste (optional)
Place all the ingredients in a wide-mouth mason jar or cup that will fit an immersion blender without splashing. Blend, working the blender in the jar until the garlic, ginger and turmeric are smooth. Place a lid on the jar. For best results, set aside for at least one hour to allow the flavors to develop. The dressing will keep in the refrigerator for up to two weeks.
Thai Peanut Sauce
Prep time: 5 minutes. Makes about 1 3/4 cups.
1 large orange, 4 small clementines or 2 large tangerines, peeled, seeded and cut into 1-inch pieces 1 1/2-inch piece fresh ginger, peeled 1 teaspoon fresh lime juice 1/2 cup peanut butter (no sugar added) 1 teaspoons unseasoned rice vinegar 2 tablespoons water 1 tablespoon soy sauce 1/4 teaspoon salt 1/4 to 1/2 teaspoon cayenne pepper, or to taste
Place all the ingredients in a wide-mouth mason jar or cup that will fit an immersion blender without splashing. Blend until the orange is fully blended and the sauce is thick and creamy. Adjust seasoning to taste. Place a lid on the jar. Allow the flavors to develop for one hour or more in the refrigerator. The dressing will keep for about a week.

Biochar Value Proposition GIVING VALUE TO DEAD TREES AND BIOMASS WASTE WHILE REDUCING CARBON DIOXIDE (CO2) IN THE ATMOSPHERE AND PRODUCING RENEWABLE ENERGY
What is Biochar? A Zero-Waste Solution — Biochar is a fine-grained charcoal made by pyrolysis (pī-rä’-la-sis), the process of heating bio- mass (wood, manure, crop residues, solid waste, etc.) with limited to no oxygen in a specially designed furnace capturing all emissions, gases and oils for reuse as energy.
An Ancient Soil Conditioner — Biochar has been used in agriculture for more than 2,500 years1 and is now becom- ing popular in modern horticulture as a safe, sustainable soil amendment.
Biochar Enhances Soil & Protects Water Quality Increased Nutrient and Water Retention — Biochar outshines all other organic soil material in its ability to attract and retain water and nutrients, as well as hold phosphorous and agrochemicals.2 Plants are healthier and less fertilizer runs off into surface water and leaches into ground- water.
Persistence — Biochar is relatively inert and therefore, persists in soil far longer than any other organic soil additives.3 Because biochar lasts 100s to 1000s of years, its benefits of nutrient and water retention and overall soil porosity keep working, unlike common fertilizers and conditioners.
Less Fertilizer Needed — When added to soil, biochar improves plant growth and crop yields while reducing the total fertilizer required. Nitrous oxide (N2O), a greenhouse gas, released from certain fertilizers is 310 times more potent than carbon dioxide CO2. Biochar conditioned soils reduce N2O off-gassing by 50-80%.
Biochar Fights Climate Change Decaying or burning biomass releases CO2 into the atmosphere and plants reabsorb it; this active carbon cycle has been in balance for millennia. Burning fossil fuels puts excessive CO2 into the air, more than can be absorbed naturally. This traps heat in the Earth’s atmosphere. Reducing atmospheric CO2 is critical to combat climate change.
A Perfect Circle Solution — Burning biomass through pyrolysis to produce energy (heat and power) instead of burning fossil fuels is a carbon neutral process; it neither adds to the climate-change problem nor reverses it.
Biochar holds 50% of the biomass’s carbon and when applied to soil, sequesters that carbon for centuries, reducing the overall amount of atmospheric CO2 by removing it from the active cycle. Biochar also enhances plant growth which absorbs more CO2 from the atmosphere. Overall, these benefits make the biochar process carbon negative5 as long as biomass production is managed sustainably.
Other Biochar Benefits iochar production is fully scalable in mobile and stationary pyrolysis ovens: from cook- ing stoves in developing countries or furnaces for household use, to on-site mobile ovens for treating forest restoration or farm wastes, to industrial sized units for heating and power generation.
Combined Heat and Power (CHP) — Heat and power produced during pyrolysis can generate electric- ity and provide heat for individual homes and industries or entire communities.
Biofuels — Combustible gases, includ- ing hydrogen, are captured during pyrolysis to create syngas, a valuable fuel that can be sold or used on-site for energy production. Bio-oil is another valued energy product produced during pyrolysis.
Solid Waste Conversion — Tipping fees, overloading of landfills and open burning are avoided when bio-waste becomes a market- able product. Less waste means less CO2 and methane emissions from landfills as well.
From Waste to Value—Once a worthless and costly byproduct, biomass waste is now a valuable resource. Through biochar, bio- mass becomes a sustainable and value-added product for urban and rural agriculture and forest communities creating jobs, improving soil and reducing forest fire hazards, particularly in the wildland-urban interface.
Carbon Offsets — Carbon credits are valu- able assets for sale or trade in the offset and cap-and-trade markets.
What's Biochar Worth Biochar is sold as a soil amendment, the price varies significantly based on location, density, porosity, quality & availability.
Carbon credits sold by sequestering carbon in biochar are economically competitive when prices reach $58/ ton CO2e.6 Carbon markets are currently accelerating in the United States.
Syngas and bio-oil markets are evolv- ing. Most pyrolysis manufacturers retain these by-products for on-site use or sell as fuel for local industry.
Costs, savings and benefits vary by region and situation. Studies of community-sized operations with multiple stakeholders predict a return on investment within three years. Industrial-sized applications are more costly.
Current research focuses on avoided costs from biochar’s ability to: nour- ish soils; increase crop yield; protect water quality; protect air quality from avoided burning; produce alternative energy and fuel by-products through pyrolysis.
Reducing forest fire hazard is an avoided cost. Although difficult to financially quantify, a single wild- fire can cost hundreds of millions of dollars in direct and indirect costs.

You’d be excited about its possible application, right? Then you’re in luck, because bacopa checks off both these boxes (and then some).
Also known as Brahmi, bacopa is used to treat a broad range of mind-related health concerns, including Alzheimer’s disease, memory loss, anxiety, attention deficit-hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) symptoms, epilepsy and as a general tonic to fight stress. Best of all, it has far less severe side effects than the dangerous psychotropic drugs often prescribed today. People also take bacopa to treat backache, joint pain and sexual performance problems in both men and women. (1)
This visually appealing plant is commonly seen as a decorative and flourishing piece of live real estate in aquariums, but make no mistake — bacopa is not just another pretty face. The history and research confirm its dynamic abilities as a current medicinal healer that might hold even more benefits to humans in the near future. Bacopa has even been shown to help regulate dopamine production up and down as needed, and that’s not all. (2)

1. Adaptogenic Stress Reducer
It’s been shown that up to 90 percent of all visits to primary care physicians are for stress-related complaints — 90 percent! (3) Crazy, I know, but not hard to believe. Stress, especially chronic stress, does terrible things to our minds and bodies, and general stress reduction should always be a top priority for anyone trying to live a healthy lifestyle.
Bacopa extract has actually been shown to work as a natural stress reliever by helping our bodies better handle or adapt to our daily stressors. An animal study conducted at the Central Drug Research Institute in India showed that a standardized extract of Bacopa monniera successfully guarded against acute and chronic stress. More specifically, it reduced damaging stomach ulcer and adrenal activity. The study concluded that bacopa possesses a potent adaptogenic activity. (4)
2. Anti-Anxiety & Antidepressant
It’s probably not too surprising that just as it reduces stress, this beneficial plant also can reduce anxiety and depression. Animal research published by the University of Michigan Health System shows the positive brain effects of bacopa, including reduction of both depression and anxiety. These very positive effects on the nervous system have biochemically been attributed to an enhancement of the effects of the neurotransmitters acetylcholine and, possibly, serotonin or GABA. (5)
3. Memory Improvement
A small, double-blind, 12-week study conducted at the Neuropsychology Laboratory at the School of Biophysical Science and Electrical Engineering in Australia had volunteers take 300 milligrams of bacopa daily while other volunteers received a placebo. Prior to the study commencing, researchers tested all volunteers on visual information processing, memory and speed of information processing.
The tests were repeated five and 12 weeks after the study began. A significant improvement among the volunteers in the bacopa group was found compared to those in the placebo group, leading researchers to conclude that it “may improve higher order cognitive processes that are critically dependent on the input of information from our environment such as learning and memory.” (6)
4. Alzheimer’s Disease & Dementia Treatment
Alzheimer’s disease is a brain disorder that progressively causes memory loss, dementia and early mortality. Natural Alzheimer’s treatment can include supplementation with bacopa. According to the Alzheimer’s Drug Discovery Foundation, it might hold promise for preventing the dementia (decline in mental ability severe enough to affect daily life) associated with Alzheimer’s. (7)
No high-quality human studies have been conducted, but the animal research affords great results so far. For example, these research studies have found that bacopa improves cognition, reduces oxidative stress and may protect the brain from Alzheimer’s- and dementia-related symptoms. (8, 9, 10, 11)
5. Epilepsy Treatment
Seizures occur in the body when your brain cells, which communicate through electrical signals, send out the wrong signals. Generally, several seizures are needed before there is a diagnosis of epilepsy.
While little to no human research has been done, there is a plethora of research in animals that suggests bacopa may be a natural epilepsy treatment. These research studies find that treatment with bacopa regulates gene expression, helps correct faulty reception of brain cells and help increase GABA responses. (12, 13, 14, 15, 16, 17) All of these results are a good sign that the cognitive impairment and seizure activity caused by epilepsy could potentially be relieved with bacopa.
6. Chronic Pain Minimizer
According to the Wall Street Journal, chronic pain is a huge health concern and health cost around the world today. Sadly, 77 percent of people with chronic pain also suffer from depression.
A review published in Current Medicinal Chemistry showed that Bacopa monnieri not only has strong antidepressant effects, but it has pain-reducing capabilities comparable to morphine. The study also indicated that this herbal treatment offers protective benefits for organs commonly affected by opiate toxicity like the brain, kidneys and heart. Researchers concluded, “Bacopa is may be a safe and well-tolerated herbal therapy for pain management in multiple clinical trials including various age groups.” (18)
7. Blood Pressure Regulator
A recent animal study showed that bacopa might increase the human body’s utilization of nitric oxide and encourage vascular muscle function, two benefits that positively influence normal blood pressure. The Journal of Ethnopharmacology study concludes that, according to research studies, some Bacopa monnieri ingredients could be effective at naturally lowering blood pressure. (19)
8. ADHD Treatment
The bacosides in Bacopa monnieri are said to sharpen cognitive function by improving transmission of nerve impulses, which makes it promising for the treatment of ADHD. Attention deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) often begins in childhood and is a chronic condition that involves attention difficulty, hyperactivity and impulsiveness.
In a 12-week, double-blind, randomized clinical trial, children with ADHD who took 50 milligrams twice a day showed significant improvement over children receiving a placebo in tests of mental control, logical memory and paired associated learning. Evaluation of study subjects did not occur until four weeks after stopping bacopa usage, indicating that the supplementation had a lasting effect. (20)
Overall, it makes sense why it would be helpful for the symptoms of ADHD. Bacopa creates a sense of calm and peace, which is very helpful for the hyperactive and impulsive tendencies of those with ADHD. It also has a unique ability to invigorate mental processes while reducing the effects of stress and nervous anxiety, which is a perfect combination for an ADHD sufferer’s attention difficulties.
9. Potential Schizophrenia Treatment Bacopa is one supplement in a long list hopeful to reduce symptoms of schizophrenia, although no human research has yet been completed. It may be able to protect against the cognitive impairments frequently seen in schizophrenia. (21, 22)
How to Use Bacopa
Bacopa is available in several forms, including powder, capsule, tea and syrup. According to the Alternative Medicine Review, recommended daily dosages are: (23)
5–10 grams of non-standardized powder 8–16 milliliters of infusion 30 milliliters of syrup (Brahmi). 5–12 milliliters per day for adults and 2.5–6 milliliters per day for children ages 6– 12 of a 1:2 fluid extract 200–400 milligrams in divided doses for adults and 100–200 milligrams daily in divided doses for children of extracts standardized to 20 percent bacosides A and B Stick with bacopa products that are organic or wild-crafted to reduce the likelihood of contamination and GMOs.
Final Thoughts on Bacopa Bacopa has been a star of traditional Ayurvedic healing for centuries. Now modern-day research continues to confirm bacopa’s abilities to improve and positively change not just mental abilities like memory and learning, but also mental health like depression and anxiety.
ADHD is on the rise globally and so is the use of conventional treatment like the drug Adderral, but bacopa extract is a natural substance that has the ability to significantly help ADHD without all of the scary side effects of conventional treatment. I can't vouch for this guy. He has an interesting story. There are a lot of newbies out there many who shouldn't be practicing because they have difficulty releasing the negative energies they are clearing from people. Different healers and different types of healing speak to people on an individual basis. Go with your gut feeling and do research as always. If you don't go with the expectation that a healing is free then you won't be disappointed. And remember, a healing is DIFFERENT than a CURE. Healings get the body on the path to wellness. theroselab.com/Welcome to the ROSE Lab, the private research centre of Dr. Magda Havas, PhD. The purpose of this lab is to study the effects of subtle energy from nature and modern technology. Indeed the acronym “ROSE” stands for “Research of Subtle Energy.”
Academic History Dr. Magda Havas received her B.Sc. in Biology and PhD in Environmental Toxicology at the University of Toronto. Her PhD was in the Canadian Arctic at the Smoking Hills, along the coast of Cape Bathurst. This is an area of natural acidification and is among the most acidic sites on the planet. At this site the research team, lead by Dr. Tom Hutchinson, studied the effects of extreme and long-term acidification and metal pollution. The team studied how certain organisms were able to adapt to the toxic conditions and how others were sensitive and died. She then spent two years as a postdoctoral fellow at Cornell University. Her research at this time was on acid rain and aluminum effects on aquatic ecosystems and more specifically on aquatic invertebrates.
Dr. Havas returned to the University of Toronto as a University Research Fellow (URL) and continued her research on chemical pollutants. She worked on drinking water quality, aquatic invertebrates, aquatic plants, terrestrial plants and human health.
Her research along with the research of hundreds of colleagues around the world and the work of the Acid Rain Coalition helped bring in clean air legislation in both Canada and the United States.
In 1989, Dr. Havas became an Associate Professor at Trent University in Peterborough, Ontario. In the early 1990’s Dr. Havas became interested in the effects of electromagnetic fields and began doing research in this area. Her first publication came out in 2000 in Environmental Reviews, a Canadian National Research Council Journal. It is a critical review of low frequency electromagnetic fields.
Her fascination with the biological effects of electromagnetic frequencies continued and she did research on the intensity of power frequency electric and magnetic fields in 60 Ontario communities, dirty electricity (intermediate frequencies) in schools, ground current effects on farms, microwave radiation effects on people. She worked with diabetics and people who have multiple sclerosis and are sensitive to electromagnetic fields. The aim of much of her current research is to determine how to diagnose people with electrohypersensitivity (EHS) objectively and how to promote their healing. She has given expert testimony related to power lines and radio frequency antennas in various countries and is an advisor to several NGOs (non-government organizations) around the world.
In 2018, Dr. Havas retired from Trent University. She continues her research and her educational videos and still gives talks to large groups on the harmful effects of electrosmog and the beneficial effects of electrotherapy.
Research Interests During the mid 1990s, Dr. Havas changed her research from studying chemical pollutants to investigating electromagnetic pollutants. She has worked with people who have EHS and has also studied the effects of microwave radiation on plants and bees. In 2005, Dr. Havas became aware of PEMF (pulsed electromagnetic field) Therapy and began to do research to test the claims PEMF manufacturers made about their products. She continues to test different devices in part to determine if those with EHS are able to use them with beneficial effects. Her research includes the biological effects of light (another part of the electromagnetic spectrum) from infrared to ultraviolet, sound vibrations, and ozone. All of these were technologies that Nikola Tesla advocated in the early 1900’s. She is also testing the accuracy of various diagnostic devices.
Dr. Havas with her colleague, Bob Connolly, travelled to various countries and interviewed medical doctors, inventors, scientists to learn as much as possible about healing with different frequencies. The end result is a series of documentaries called “The Healing Fields” and a companion ebook about the “Science inside the Healing Fields” (both in progress) to be released by the end of 2018.

Yet most environmentalists know little about it, perhaps because the subject has been the purview of physicists and engineers for so long that biologists have lost touch with electromagnetism’s fundamental inclusion in the biological paradigm. All living cells and indeed whole living beings, no matter what genus or species, are dynamic coherent electrical systems utterly reliant on bioelectricity for life’s most basic metabolic processes. It turns out that most living things are fantastically sensitive to vanishingly small EMF exposures. Living cells interpret such exposures as part of our normal cellular activities (think heartbeats, brainwaves, cell division itself, etc.) The problem is, man-made electromagnetic exposures aren’t “normal.” They are artificial artifacts, with unusual intensities, signaling characteristics, pulsing patterns, and wave forms, that don’t exist in nature. And they can misdirect cells in myriad ways. Every aspect of the ecosystem may be affected, including all living species from animals, humans, plants and even microorganisms in water and soil. We are already seeing problems in sentinel species like birds, bats, and bees. Wildlife is known to abandon areas when cell towers are placed. Radiofrequency radiation (RF)—the part of the electromagnetic spectrum used in all-things-wireless today—is a known immune system suppressor, among other things. RF is a form of energetic air pollution and we need to understand it as such. Humans are not the only species being affected. The health of our planet may be in jeopardy from this newest environmental concern—added to all the others. Citizens need to call upon government to fund appropriate research and to get industry influence out of the dialogue. We are constantly being bathed in an increasing sea of radiation from exposure to the above, as well as electrical appliances, computers, Bluetooth devices, Wi-Fi installations and over 2,000 communications satellites in outer space that shower us with signals to GPS receivers. New WiMax transmitters on cell phone towers that have a range of up to two square miles compared to Wi-Fi’s 300 feet will soon turn the core of North America into one huge electromagnetic hot spot. Children are more severely affected because their brains are developing and their skulls are thinner. A two-minute call can alter brain function in a child for an hour, which is why other countries ban their sale or discourage their use under the age of 18. In contrast, this is the segment of the population now being targeted here in a $2 billion U.S. advertising campaign that views “tweens” (children between 8 and 12 years old) as the next big cell phone market. Firefly and Barbie cell phones are also being promoted for 6 to 8-year-olds. It is not generally appreciated that there is a cumulative effect and that talking on a cell phone for just an hour a day for ten years can add up to 10,000 watts of radiation. That’s ten times more than from putting your head in a microwave oven. Pregnant women may also be at increased risk based on a study showing that children born to mothers who used a cell phone just two or three times a day during pregnancy showed a dramatic increase in hyperactivity and other behavioral and emotional problems. And for the 30% of children who had also used a cell phone by age 7, the incidence of behavioral problems was 80% higher! Whether ontogeny (embryonic development) recapitulates phylogeny is debatable, but it is clear that lower forms of life are also much more sensitive. If you put the positive electrode of a 1.5 volt battery in the Pacific Ocean at San Francisco and the negative one off San Diego, sharks in the in between these cities can detect the few billionths of a volt electrical field. EMF fields have also been implicated in the recent massive but mysterious disappearance of honeybee colonies essential for pollinating over 90 commercial crops. As Albert Einstein warned, “If the bee disappeared off the surface of the globe, then man would only have four years of life left.” Finally, all life on earth evolved under the influence of solar radiation and geomagnetic forces that we have learned to adapt to and in some instances even utilize. The health of all living systems (ranging upward from a cell, tissue, organ or person, to a family, organization or nation) depends on good communication – good communication within, as well as with the external environment. All communication in the body eventually takes place via very subtle electromagnetic signaling between cells that is now being disrupted by artificial electropollution we have not had time to adapt to. As Alvin Toffler emphasized in Future Shock, too much change in too short a time produces severe stress due to adaptational failure. The adverse effects of electrosmog may take decades to be appreciated, although some, like carcinogenicity, are already starting to surface. This gigantic experiment on our children and grandchildren could result in massive damage to mind and body with the potential to produce a disaster of unprecedented proportions, unless proper precautions are immediately implemented. At the same time, we must acknowledge that novel electromagnetic therapies have been shown to benefit stress related disorders ranging from anxiety, depression and insomnia, to arthritis, migraine and tension headaches. As demonstrated in Bioelectromagnetic Medicine, they may also be much safer and more effective than drugs, so we need to avoid throwing the baby out with the bathwater.”

Growing up, neuroscientist Judith Grisel would take little sips of alcohol at family events, but it wasn't until she was 13 that she experienced being drunk for the first time. Everything changed.
"It was so complete and so profound," she says. "I suddenly felt less anxious, less insecure, less inept to cope with the world. Suddenly I was full and OK in a way that I had never been."
Grisel began chasing that feeling. Over the years, she struggled with alcohol, marijuana and cocaine. But along the way, she also became interested in the neuroscience of addiction.
"I'm always interested in the mechanisms of things," she says. "And when I heard that I had a disease, I kind of felt naturally that that would have a biological basis, and I figured that I could study that biological basis and understand it and then maybe fix it."
Now it has been 30 years without using drugs or alcohol for Grisel, a professor of psychology at Bucknell University, where she studies how addictive drugs work on the brain. Her new book is Never Enough: The Neuroscience and Experience of Addiction.
Interview Highlights
On how drug and alcohol abuse affects the brains of young people
The changes in behavior that happen during adolescence are so important and lasting because the brain is forming permanent structures. So whatever you experience as an adolescent is going to have a much more impactful influence on the rest of your life trajectory than it would, say, if you did this at another time in development when your brain wasn't so prone to changing.
When the circuits are being laid down, if they're laid down under the influence of a drug, then they're going to be laid down differently than if it's not under the influence of a drug. If you start using at 28, when the circuits are already more or less set, then you're not going to have such a long-lasting impact. ...
Probably [the brain is] not mature until about 25, and this is a really critical time. We see definitely lasting changes on the brain and behavior. So binge drinking certainly predisposes toward alcoholism. It also alters the circuits, the connections, between nerve cells and the pathways, including the dopamine pathway. It's not just drinking early or how much you drink, but the pattern that you drink — and binge drinking is probably the worst pattern if you want to predispose toward problem use.
On how alcohol is like a pharmacological sledgehammer
Alcohol is such a mess. It's a tiny, tiny molecule, and it acts all over the brain in so many different pathways. It affects endorphins, as I said, and dopamine. It affects glutamate and GABA, the two primary excitatory and inhibitory neurotransmitters. It affects all kinds of ion channels. It's so small that it can act all over the place. And so it's been really hard to study. In fact, we still are just beginning to understand how it is that you feel drunk — what the mechanisms are for feeling drunk — because it acts kind of like a sledgehammer or just in a widespread way to disrupt all kinds of cell functioning.
On how cocaine is like a laser
Cocaine is the perfect opposite of alcohol in this way. It does one thing. It does it really effectively. It blocks the recycling of dopamine and other neurotransmitters like ... norepinephrine, and that enhances pleasure and enhances arousal and enhances movement. So it's very specific. It's easy to study, relatively, I should say, and much easier to understand how it works.
On how marijuana floods the brain
Marijuana is both like cocaine and like alcohol. So it's like cocaine in that its actions are very specific, and it's like alcohol in that those actions are all over the brain. ... It does one thing, but it does it everywhere. So for cocaine, it does one thing, but it does it in just a few pathways. Alcohol does many things all over the place. THC, the active ingredient in marijuana, does one thing more or less, but everywhere, and that thing is to enhance communication between cells, to enhance the message. So to kind of turn up the gain or the volume on a particular message that neurons are communicating. ...
When we smoke marijuana, the whole brain is flooded with THC, and that causes the cell-to-cell communication in cells throughout the brain to be enhanced or to be exaggerated. And that's really fun, because it seems like, "Wow, everything is so interesting! Everything is beautiful! The music is so rich! The colors are so wonderful! The food is delicious!" Everything at once is turned on. That's not how the natural system would work with discretion. ...
What's unfortunate is the brain does adapt to that, and it adapts by decreasing the number of sites that THC can have an effect [on]. So those sites downregulate, meaning they go away over time, and it doesn't take long, but ... the more you use and the more often you use, the less of those receptors there will be. ... When you take away the drug, then things seem sort of lifeless and gray and maybe less interesting.
On opiate addiction
Opiates make a user feel like they are not suffering, that they are completely content, completely comfortable, completely well, that everything is OK the way it is. And I think that for that reason they're so attractive, because often we don't experience that things are OK the way they are. So they are kind of a perfect antidote to suffering of any kind.

And so now we don't feel high and completely content with them; we just feel not sick and miserable. And when we take them away, we feel full of suffering — much more suffering than we had started with to begin with. So the brain produces its own type of suffering.
On why she does not believe methadone is a good solution to opiate dependency
Methadone is a pure substitute addiction, so it takes the place of other opiates. It's easier for society because it's very long lasting, so people aren't going through this really intense period of withdrawal. ... It's cheap and it lasts a long time, and it makes the user not withdraw.
So for the rest of us, it's kind of a nice thing because these people who are opiate dependent are kind of out of the way; they're not so hard to deal with. But for those users — especially if they're young — it's even harder to get off of methadone than it is to get off of, say, heroin, because it lasts such a long time.
On how drug and alcohol use is so ingrained in society
It's just something to notice how much of society is focused ... on kind of buffering or escaping or mitigating reality in some way. And for people who can get away with that without self-destructing, I think that's something still to notice. But for the rest of us [who struggle with addiction] — and we're not really that rare — it's a pretty common disorder. ...
I do think we really, as a society, cannot get enough. It's everywhere. I also think, though, that it's important to ask individually, I guess, "Is this drug use enhancing my life, or is it diminishing it?" So for coffee I can say, happily, it's enhancing my life and the costs of a little tolerance and dependence are not so bad, because I can just drink three cups. But I think that is something that we have to go into our own hearts to know the answer to.

Early on I was very interested in health and healing. I became particularly interested in Hawaiian culture and the HUNA as described by Max Freedom Long. Soon afterwards I studied under Morrnah Simeona (Kahuna) and Hew Len in the late 1980's. Max was long dead by then and I thought this was the next best thing. They taught and certified their students in Ho'oponopono. Morrnah had been enlisted many years earlier by JFK to help him heal from his many physical ailments (that the general public was unaware of). Their sessions for me were quite an experience.
After the lengthy course I returned to the comfort of my home in Tempe Arizona and thought I would begin to practice the meditations I had learned that summer. I was about 3 minutes into my first meditation when the tree outside my bedroom was struck by lightning. The sun was shining and no storm clouds. It was through Morrnah I learned to understand and respect the Hawaiian goddess Pele. A while later I was in my assistant's office. He and his wife were originally from Hawaii. I cannot recall the exact discussion but the subject of Pele came up. He said "I don't believe in that shit." I said, "Nathan, be careful of talk like that. You might be sorry." Fast forward 3 minutes. Nathan receives a call from his wife. He appeared to be concerned and when he hung up I asked what the problem was. He said his wife was driving down the highway when all of a sudden, for no reason the rear window of her car exploded and blew out over the highway. Nathan wasn't good at putting 2 + 2 together so I reminded him what we were talking about when that happened to his wife's car. He turned pale and speechless. His wife was a believer. The most important thing is that you feel safe and comfortable with your chosen provider.
Got One! Now What? Don't be shy! Ask questions!
Whats is their training? How many years have they been in practice? Why do they do what they do? Are they happy? And perhaps the biggest telltale sign of a balanced healer: vitality. Are they healthy? Do they practice what they preach? Any healer worth their salt won’t mind you asking questions about their background, training, and intentions. None of us are perfect, but if you are met with attitude or avoidance, you might want to consider finding services elsewhere. In this day and age where there is a metaphorically a healer behind every tree, knowledge is power. Choosing a provider doesn’t have to be an overwhelming experience.

Some patients have started to seek out an oral treatment for food allergies that's not yet widely offered by clinicians. Cat Gwynn/Getty Images
Scouring ingredient lists. Carrying an EpiPen. Sitting at the special lunch table at school. These anxiety-ridden measures have become routine for families with severe food allergies, who know it takes only one wrong bite to end up in the emergency room.
Nearly 6 million U.S. children and teens — about 8 percent, or two per classroom — have food allergies. In children, allergy to peanuts, which can be life-threatening, has gone up more than 21 percent since 2010.
Some of these kids — as well as adults with severe food allergies — are trying a new treatment. And they're not waiting around for the Food and Drug Administration to approve it. The treatment, known as oral immunotherapy, involves consuming tiny amounts of the trigger food, with gradual increases in dose. Over time, the immune system learns to react less vigorously to the allergen.
Because there's not yet an FDA-approved version of this treatment, most medical providers don't yet offer it. So most patients can get it only by enrolling in research studies, of which there have been dozens in recent years.
When Whitney Block, a clinical research nurse who helped run oral immunotherapy trials at Stanford University, saw that more than 2,000 people were on the waitlist to get into these studies, she decided to start offering oral immunotherapy on her own. In 2017, Block opened her own clinic, National Allergy Center, in Redwood City, Calif., and just launched a second site in Southern California.

"What I've done and continue to do in research trials I've brought out to private practice to make it available to more people," Block says. Patients have flown to the clinic from the East Coast and even from Bulgaria and the United Arab Emirates.
Block is among a small but growing number of allergists around the U.S. who have begun offering the therapy without enrolling patients in trials. Just four board-certified allergists offered oral immunotherapy for food allergies in 2010, but the number surpassed 100 by 2017, according to the website OIT 101, which is run by parents who've had success with oral immunotherapy and maintains a directory of providers.
The therapy is not a cure. People who get the treatment still have to read labels and cannot eat whatever they want. And the vast majority have to continue the treatments indefinitely to keep their tolerance. For peanut allergy, for instance, they would need to continue to consume roughly one peanut per day.
Yet for many, to be able to tolerate even one or two whole peanuts without symptoms is life-changing. "It provides that additional margin of safety," says Dr. Brian Vickery, an allergist-immunologist at Emory University. "By undergoing this type of treatment, they can move around in the world with more peace of mind."
Vickery was the lead author of a paper published in November 2018 in the New England Journal of Medicine that described encouraging results from a placebo-controlled study of peanut protein capsules developed by Aimmune Therapeutics. While it's possible for clinicians to offer the treatment simply with commercially available peanut flour, Aimmune's product, AR101, offers a standardized dose suitable for rigorous study and FDA approval.
The South San Francisco biopharmaceutical company tested AR101 in 551 peanut allergy sufferers at 66 sites. At the end of the 12-month trial, more than two-thirds of the group taking the active drug were able to tolerate a dose of peanut protein equivalent to about two peanut kernels. Based on Aimmune's recent results, the company submitted a licensing application to the FDA for its peanut capsules in December. It could be approved in 2019, and approval could lead to broader use of the treatment and to insurance covering it.
DBV Technologies of Montrouge, France, is developing another form of immunotherapy that delivers peanut protein to the immune system through a small skin patch. The company plans to resubmit a licensing application for this product, Viaskin Peanut, in response to the FDA's request for more data on manufacturing procedures and quality controls.
While these products work their way toward approval, the vast majority of providers are not yet offering oral immunotherapy to their patients, except as part of a research trial. "Physicians are concerned that without FDA approval, if something goes wrong, they're going to be held liable," says Dr. Christina Ciaccio, a pediatric allergist at the University of Chicago Medicine.
At a national immunology meeting in San Francisco this Sunday, experts will debate whether the treatment is ready to go mainstream. The "yes" side will be presented by Dr. Richard Wasserman, who started offering the treatment to patients at Dallas Food Allergy Center in July 2008. Since then, the clinic has treated more than 800 people for allergies to 20 foods. "The response of patients and families to oral immunotherapy has been the most rewarding thing I have done in 40 years of medical practice," Wasserman says.
On the "no" side is Dr. Robert Wood, a pediatric allergist at Johns Hopkins Hospital, who has published a study that noted that the degree and duration of protection offered by immunotherapy is unknown and that allergic reactions are common during the treatment.
Many families find the therapy stressful. At some points during the regimen, often on days the doses increase, most patients experience skin rashes, itching in the mouth, abdominal pain and other unwelcome side effects. And it doesn't work for everyone. In the recent trial of Aimmune's peanut capsules, 10 percent of the participants 17 and under who received the active drug needed rescue epinephrine during the exit food challenge at the end of the study.
"If you have lived your life thinking this stuff is poisonous and can kill you ... and now the treatment is in fact ... to take a little bit of it in food every day, that's a difficult thing for people to wrap their heads around, particularly when they start to experience symptoms," Vickery says.
In addition, immunotherapy requires certain precautions that can hinder daily activity. For instance, patients must avoid exercise, hot showers and anything else that elevates the body temperature for several hours after dosing.
Because of the difficulty of the treatment and the risks, clinicians caution against patients trying this on their own. "There is potential for serious side effects," warns Block. "You definitely need medical oversight."
Oral immunotherapy treatment "is not going to be suitable and appropriate for everyone," says Ciaccio. But she says emerging treatments for food allergies "will continue to be a hot topic."
"We need more than one — just like we need more than one treatment for diabetes," she says.

I would guess that not only would movement retraining help one's knees but also one's back and spinal cord. Correct that problem and watch neuropathy go away as pinched nerves in the right spots will cause numbness in your extremities and may even affect the functioning of ones vital organs that need properly functioning nerves. Years ago I was told I needed a knee operation. Rather than do that I bought a 4 level house that would force me to go up and down stairs all day because I knew I wouldn't have time to exercise or have therapy. It worked! Footwear is also important. I had a bad case of Plantar Fasciitis. For months I suffered. One day I stopped by a thrift store and found an interesting pair of golf shoes. No sooner did I try them on, stood up and begin walking did I discover the plantar fasciitis went away...that fast!! Everything is connected and we should all be our own detectives and take charge of our health. Doctors don't have all the answers. Specialists are often the worst and think they know everything but often they don't keep up with the latest or even consider alternatives. Try to find an "integrative" physician or seek alternative health professionals and opinions if you can.

With support from the National Science Foundation's (NSF) Human-Centered Computing Program (HCC), Stanford University mechanical engineer Mark Cutkosky and his team are using volunteer test subjects to find out. One of the major problems at the root of knee pain is uneven wear and tear on the knee cartilage, which leads to arthritis. Cutkosky's research, known as Movement Retraining, focuses on alleviating pain by analyzing and possibly changing a person's stride. The goal is to slow the rate at which arthritis progresses and thereby delay or even eliminate the need for surgery. The research team outfits test subjects with sensors and then directs them to walk on a treadmill where custom software precisely calculates forces on the joints. That data helps the team determine if a gait change might help reduce pain. Cutkosky and his team developed a biofeedback device for treadmill walking that vibrates when there is a misstep to help test subjects learn their new gaits. Movement Retraining isn't just for people in pain. Cutkosky says athletes could improve their moves with this biofeedback technique -- everything from golf swings to jump shots.

If you have a bad reaction to a medicine, it might not be the drug itself, but what are called "inactive ingredients" in the pill or capsule.
An article published Wednesday in Science Translational Medicine surveys this field and finds ingredients that are potentially troublesome for some people are ubiquitous.
For example, a few years ago study co-author Giovanni Traverso, a gastroenterologist at Harvard-affiliated Brigham and Women's Hospital, came across a patient with a severe gluten intolerance called celiac disease. The person was having trouble with a medication that apparently contained gluten as an inactive ingredient — potentially making the condition worse, not better.
Traverso, who is also a biomedical engineer with an appointment at MIT, started exploring this topic with some colleagues by weighing pills in the hospital pharmacy. They concluded that, on average, about 75 percent of a pill or capsule is made up of inactive ingredients – that is, material other than the chemical or chemicals that determine the therapeutic effect of a drug.
In their article, the scientists say drug companies have more than a thousand of these inactive constituents to choose from. "In some instances there can be up to 35 of them in a single pill," Traverso says in an interview.

Traverso says these inactive ingredients are essential to stabilize medications and sometimes to help the body absorb the active ingredients. "I don't want to malign inactive ingredients in any way," he says. "I think inactive ingredients are very helpful."

In general, the amounts in a given pill aren't concerning. But many people take multiple medicines, and if those drugs contain the same inactive ingredients, the doses can add up.
If you are lactose intolerant and take a pill that uses lactose as an inactive ingredient, "it's probably not going to manifest in any significant symptoms," he says. "But as the number of pills you're taking [increases], then certainly you might cross that threshold."
One challenge in understanding the scope of this problem is, it's often not clear how much of a particular substance is necessary to trigger an allergy or other reaction.
"It's something that might vary from one person to another," Traverso says. But for a lot of these ingredients, "we don't really know today."
The Food and Drug Administration regulates these drug ingredients. Among other actions, it has issued draft guidelines that would specify how companies should label drugs that contain gluten.
Dr. John Kelso, an allergist at the Scripps Clinic in San Diego, has reviewed the issue of allergens in medications. He says reactions are actually quite uncommon. In fact, it's usually a false alarm.
For example, after many years worrying about the traces of egg protein in flu vaccines, health officials now say that people with egg allergies are not at risk from the shot.
Overreaction to this worry can actually backfire. "Oftentimes the medications are being withheld from patients who say they're allergic to eggs or soy or something else that may be in the medication," Kelso says, "but it is actually not a problem."
Penicillin, though an active ingredient, is a prime example of overreaction.
"We realized lately that approximately 95 percent of patients who are labeled penicillin-allergic are not," he says, "either because they never were or because they had an allergy that waned with the passage of time." An allergist can test people to see if they're actually allergic to this useful and inexpensive antibiotic.
For people who are concerned about the inactive ingredients, Traverso says it is possible to track down that information. Look through the fine print in the instructions (referred to as a package insert) that come with your medication, "and eventually you will find it," he says.
The National Library of Medicine also has an online database, called Pillbox, with this information.
Different manufacturers of the same medicine often use different inactive ingredients, so if one drug might be causing trouble, it's worth considering a switch to the same product produced by a different manufacturer, Traverso says.
He and his colleagues have a patent pending on an algorithm that is designed to make this sleuthing easier. They're thinking about developing a consumer app or some software to help doctors and pharmacists review all the drugs they are taking, so they can alert their patients to potentially troublesome inactive ingredients.
