I agree with Freidman on just about everything but this. I think her performance was spectacular. I have friends who have said the same things (or worse) about Linda so I guess it is all a matter of taste.
Here is the studio version:
I like this other song she has out with a toned down sound:

Well, trying to follow the advice if you have nothing positive to say say nothing but this does show how difficult a song this song is to sing!!!!! eddiejinfl

I agree with the writer. Even on such a dramatic piece, Linda sings it to tell a story with feeling and beauty. You can close your eyes and delight in her version.
Alison is just singing. Sure, she's hit all of the notes--and covered all the lyrics, but that's it. She's trying too hard, and there is no heart. No comfort. I actually feel anxiety when I listen to Alison's version.
She appears young and inexperienced, hopefully she will improve in those areas with time.
Sure, I'm partial, but I really think it's never a good idea for any singer to attempt any song Linda has done. Comparisons are always going to be made--and cruel.

I agree, Belle.
It's the tone, the color of Linda's voice that's irreplaceable. To my ear, Alison's voice has no color to it.
Kudos, though, for the attempt.

Quote by Belle:
Quote by Richard W:
I am willing to give Allisan the benefit of the doubt here because, even with some flaws, the thing to remember is not that she did it (in my humble opinion) reasonably well, but that she was even able to do it at all. I'm still partial to Linda's 1977 version. But we probably ought to get the picture hung straight here, so to speak. Up until Linda's Parkinson's announcement two and a half years ago, the media had basically forgotten who in the hell she was, or that she was even still alive, so any little bit of good attention helps.

I don't agree that they completely forgot about her. Her immigration walk was publicized as well as being on cnn re: this topic. She has been on Tavis' show and been mentioned by him and others on that show. Her comments on fellow artists' death were published. She was briefly interviewed leaving Eva's restaurant. I could go on. No, she wasn't ny times front page news but neither are a lot of celebrities that had much more exposure in the past. eddiejinfl

Yes I put a link up on a different thread in other artists section of forum. It came on my news feed and I think I was more excited that the singer Alisan Porter was singing Blue Bayou, which even tho Roy sang it first Linda is better known for the song. I do think she sang it well and has a huge voice, she even went up a few notes, higher than Linda... which as we all know that is what those talent shows love.. hit the big note to get the chair to turn. that said I'm happy she sang it because it reminds people to look up Linda's version and curious young kids seeking vintage music would also look up Linda.. kids love that stuff. regarding who sang it better ? come on!!!! no match..

She obviously gave a nod to Linda by singing this song yet she made it her own with the changes Dianna mentioned. Making a song her own is also a Ronstadt trademark so this was no small feat. Except for Roy Orbison who actually changed his own arrangement after Linda had a hit with it I haven't found any other covers remotely matching Linda's. Alisan did a nice job and I like that other song that was posted that showed her softer musical side.

Well first of all, I have fallen in love with that song "Stay" by Alisan Porter. Never heard it til now. What a beautiful song! Thx Ronstadtfanaz!
As far as Linda's voice, what makes it so special to me is the sound of her voice. It's that "Ronstadt Sound" as Bobby Kimmel called it in an interview years ago. I'm a professional singer myself , so I've listened to a lot of singers. And I've never heard anybody with that "sound". And with that "sound" is the emotion in her voice. I actually sing with a woman who comes close to sounding like Linda at times. I've always thought it's a shame she didn't have a daughter who could sing like her and pass that give along for future generations.
Anybody who does her songs, to this day at least, will always fall short in my opinion to the original. Let's face it, you're being compared to one of the greatest voices of all time.(Best ever for me!)

Curly Sue on the Bayou? It was a respectable version but no comparison to the rich, lush quality of Linda's voice, or the high note at the end.

I think she'll get better as time goes by. Not really fair to compare to Linda's version but it was as good as anyone else who's tried it over the last 30 years.

MR. GREEN! Good to see you are still here too. You are right. Few if any come close to Linda's voice and it's a daring try. It is nice to see how Linda has influenced those who came after. I do like the changes Dianna mentioned as it puts her stamp on the song. And like Bassinger I really like her song STAY. She has me hooked there and it shows another side of her voice and talent. She reminds me more of Jann Arden (another favorite of mine) than Linda. www.youtube.com/playlist?list=PLUMq4sB5dsC9kQAHv2ad60q4lPrDN44U8I have a tendency to like singers and songs few here like for some reason lol. I think you were the only one who convinced me to like You Tell Me That I'm Falling Down by posting that video link. Amazing what a live video can do.

I feel slighted lol!!! I asked about Kevin. I think on a different thread. Is good to see him post. I too am glad that Linda is having an influence. The phrasing of the new version throws me off since there is a different reading when she sings the words "blue bayou" in the chorus especially. Again, I'd rather give compliments than criticism but just wanted to let my opinion reflect what I hear. Life is perception. eddiejinfl

Sill on top of getting Linda info. We have some fun stuff this spring with Trio 3 and the Grammy Lifetime Achievement gala coming up.

Most and I mean most of those women have aged really well assuming their second photos are in the past five years or so. (unless they are dead of course)
Glad someone FINALLY chose some of Linda's nicer photos old and newer.

Not to be picky but I think the standard release of the session for Linda's after pic usually shows her smiling more and looking more refreshed. I could be wrong. eddiejinnj
