Why do Linda Ronstadt compilation albums always omit some of her biggest hits? For example, it's always "It's So Easy" OR "That'll Be The Day " Never both. "When Will I Be Loved" gets excluded a lot. As does "Tumbling Dice" and "Love Is A Rose." How hard is it for Rhino to assemble a "career spanning Greatest Hits" that simply includes everything that ever charted. I'd like to see one with every song that ever made it above 200 on any chart, with the chart position included in liner notes and even guest vocals that were hits like "An American Dream," etc. It would means we might get "Dreams To Dream" and "When You Wish Upon a Star" and Trio stuff. The last 2 Rhino offerings were okay but they were such head scratchers.

The last 2 Rhino offerings were okay but they were such head scratchers. I have enough copies of the "hits" (5 renderings each of "Blue Bayou," "Heart like a Wheel," "I Can’t Help It If I'm Still in Love with You," "Poor, Poor Pitiful Me," "When Will I Be Loved," and "Willing," as well as seven different iterations of "You're No Good." And I don't own a single album marked "Greatest Hits." I'd so much rather have a compilation that includes none of her singles. Here's a quick listing of some of Linda's essential non-hits. It's the first 76 minutes I came up with, and I skipped some songs I love, so a second disc would be no problem to assemble. "La Charreada" just came on ( Canciones), and I realize I only included one song in Spanish, "Lo Siento Mi Vida." And I didn't include anything from Get Closer or Cry like a Rainstorm. Alison 3:29 Bewitched, Bothered, and Bewildered 4:27 The Blue Train 5:04 Carmelita 3:08 Crazy He Calls Me 3:35 Feels like Home 4:51 For a Dancer 4:44 Freezing 3:19 Gainesville 3:32 Girls Talk 3:25 King of Bohemia 3:05 Lo Siento Mi Vida 3:56 Rivers of Babylon/Give One Heart 5:02 = 40:09 Simple Man, Simple Dream 3:14 The Sweetest Gift 3:05 The Tattler 3:58 What’ll I Do? 4:09 When I Fall in Love 2:26 When I Grow Too Old to Dream 3:49 Will You Love Me Tomorrow 2:27

I think it would behoove Rhino Records, but more to the point Linda herself, to release a compilation of material that never saw the light of day on any official studio releases, as the Australian import label Raven did in 2009 by putting out "She's A Very Lovely Woman" as the bonus track of their compilation CD that combined Hand Sown, Home Grown and Silk Purse. I'm not talking about alternate takes of anything that got onto the albums in the form that they finally did, I am talking about actual tracks that were completed, but were left off.
Perhaps that goes against the conventional wisdom of some, and Linda probably would feel too embarrassed by such material, that it's just not up to what she feels are her standards. But just having constant re-releases of "the hits" is redundancy at its most blatant, especially when some are left off for whatever reasons; and to my mind, it doesn't really need to be that way.

The last 2 Rhino offerings were okay but they were such head scratchers. The fact is most compilation albums on any artists are not meant for the die hard fans but for the casual fans or for possible new fans who may hear a song on the radio that once was a hit, and they want that song. Any song that made it above 200 is a tall, tall order as more often than not, the greatest hits compilation albums tend to focus on Top 40 hits, not Top 100 or Top 200. Songs that didn't so well on the charts are almost always ignored unless the artist wants it included. With regard to Linda's guest vocals, that involves having to make deals with the other record companies that own those recordings and those companies may want a higher fee or royalty to cinch the inclusion. There's also the matter of licensing approval (music publishing) and although that's usually just a formality, sometimes the music publishers can be jerks about such matters in also wanting higher royalties for themselves and the songwriters. And as to song content, one of the main gripes about compilations is the same number of songs appearing over and over again or omissions. But, again, the compilation albums or greatest hits or whatever you want to call them are not meant for the die hards but the casual fair weather fan or the new fan. It may also be to test the waters of the market, to see how much interest is out there for the artist. Enough interest could result in the reissue of an artist's back catalog or the release of unreleased material if for any reason, the artist is no longer recording. And as Linda can no longer sing, testing to gauge the interest is an important factor in determining if her back catalog warrants continued reissuing. Or new albums of possibly unreleased material, which to be quite honest, I don't think there's enough unreleased studio material to fill up several albums. Two or three, maybe, but a lot of that would depend on whether Linda put down vocals on what there is that's unreleased. Would Linda fans want to have any song that didn't have a vocal from her or unfinished in any way?
