If any film composer ever deserved such an honor, it is this man, whose scores are the kind that none of the last three generations of filmgoers have been able to get out of their ears.

He does deserve to be honored to be sure. The score that comes to mind for me is his epic JFK score. It perfectly captures the mood of the film and has deservedly become a modern classic. You can hear various movements from it in countless shows. The entire score can be heard here:
