Fab, thank you very much for posting this. They also posted yesterday "the official video" for "Mad Love" (the song) -- It almost makes me wonder if Rhino is planning a reissue of "Mad Love" (EDIT) -- I just went back and subscribed to Rhino and it shows that Rhino uploaded Nine (9) Linda Ronstadt videos to its YouTube channel yesterday. Here they all are -- Rhino's Linda Ronstadt Videos

Outstanding videos-too bad Linda can't rock LOL(irony). I don't think Waddy knows what to do with himself without a guitar-great backup singer tho kinda a Rosemary Wachtel. I also noticed the old rickenebacker guitar. I wonder if that was the one that Linda wanted for the vintage sound and someone (producer-musician?)Was bitching about 'cause it was a piece of crap and couldn't be tuned. I think it turned out if you overdrive the amp enough who'll notice!
Gotta watch the other six or seven videos in this series.

Great, thanks!.. Interesting of course they are just now released as 'official'... I also noted Waddy as a back up singer without a guitar, never saw him in that role before...

Check out the look at the very end of "How do I make you?" Completely devastating! This woman has to be from across the river because she sure can kill you with her eyes.

I don't know how many people realize it, but there are quite a few pics of Linda where she has that smoky, almost sinister way of staring (almost...dare I say it...even Nicholsonesque).

I would use smoky or they use smoldering to describe eyes. the one with the short hair the white tied shirt with her lookin down but her eyes look up is like that. one of the number of mad love era photo sessions. of course I love the one on gh vol2 where she wears the overalls. I used to love to wear overalls with no shirt but they can irritate let's say your chest. eddiejinnj

Yes, I too would describe her eyes as smoldering or even" big scared" I don't see the Nicolson comparison (creepy lol).. kind of like those Keane "Big Eyes" painting. Not so much in the white shirt photo photo but the other photo is a good example of that.

The white shirt photo with sneakers (for the longest time I kept thinking I saw horses instead of the sneakers.. that would make a cool shirt too. Anyway, she really changed her look for Mad Love..

These videos were for promotional use of course for the release of Mad Love. At that point there was no MTV yet. I do remember MTV playing some of these promotional videos for Mad Love on MTV but not very often at all. Usually late at night. I think I saw the "Hurt So Bad" and "Mad Love" clips. "Get Closer" got pretty good coverage on MTV but I do remember most people I watched it with thought it was laughable and I would get very upset with them for making fun of Linda.

Yes, moon--I remember this one well on MTV. It is a bit lame, but cute nonetheless.

Well, it's really about as close to a "rock" video as Linda ever really got, in my humble opinion; and even though it isn't a "masterpiece", I'd take it over most of the rest of what MTV broadcasted, then and especially now.

Yes, "How Do I Make You?" is really as far into hard rock as Linda ever went, but it is not overdone to the point where it crosses into heavy metal; in fact, it's very stripped down. And as with almost everything else of Linda's that no longer gets played, even the fact that this song made it as high as #10 in the spring of 1980 doesn't cause even the so-called "oldies" radio stations to play it.

That Get Closer video doesn't work for me at all. To me, it's just as Diana described it, "forced sexy/cute." You (or I) can feel her discomfort and it makes me uncomfortable to watch it.
Linda would be the first to admit that she was not a video artist, and she shouldn't have to be. Performing a song for a camera convincingly in an artificial studio mileu takes a certain skill to pull off -- now THAT Madge had in spades -- and Linda didn't have it.
For my money, any Linda video, like the Mad Love ones here, should be concert-style performances. In those she is performing the song and you'd best get out of her way; in the Get Closer video, she's performing for the camera, and falls back on exaggerated mannerisms and mugging. Anyone who has seen her on stage knows she is a minimalist (and would never do, and never did do, what she's doing here), while video demands much, much more acting.
I see the same thing happen to her in the What's New video, where she exaggerates her facial expressions to an unsuccessful degree of coyness as she lip-synchs the song. She's not comfortable and, hence, tries too hard, something the camera captures and exposes with a cold, implacable eye.
Bless her 'heart, though, for trying.

I have comment regarding the Mad Love album... I gotta say Justine was/is one of my favorite songs off that album. Didn't Linda say for that song she had to play the part of a boy? I always thought that song was pretty damn "hot," and ahead of her time.. I don't think even Madge could have that off.. certainly not the chops.. lol

Rhino may prove to be a good home for Linda. Not only are they claiming her music but looks like they are going after her videos and in some cases cleaning them up. Bravo!! I have noticed youtube also doing the same thing with some videos.

I've always had a spot for "Justine", too, Diana. Love the part where she sings "the cold wire edge of the whip is all that's left of you."
Only complaint would be the weak instrumental break, which could have been tougher.

Quote by Richard W:
Perhaps the basic tenet is that Linda really cannot convincingly act out on camera what she can most convincingly sing about either in a studio or in front of a live audience. She is very self-conscious, which really doesn't work in a music video, in my opinion. That said, I'm not as down on the "Get Closer" video as others are; I'm more forgiving of it because Linda at least tried doing something that she must have felt was outside her competence.

Mad Love was a good album for it's time with Linda venturing into "New Wave" territory. When I listen to it now however, I feel that musical style was not particularly well-suited to her voice or who she is. Much of it seems like forced edginess and anger that's not quite believable. For that reason, I probably like Look Out For My Love the best, but Mad Love and Justine are solid tracks.
