Other than Sarah Brightman I'm not a fan of any classical artist. I like Sarah's voice and her ability to sing in her Soprano voice and Pop voice.
I enjoy her albums a lot. My next album of hers to listen to is Harem.

I would have to say that the general audience is partly responsible for the classical music industry being in the "sorry" state it's in...if indeed it is in that state. Unless they are willing to open up their ears to new works and new sounds (which are not all atonal or dissonant, as some would have you believe), then there's no real continuation or progress; we get stuck with money-making pop/classical crossovers or various releases of box sets of Beethoven, Brahms, or Mahler.
And we should all keep in mind that those composers' symphonies were once new works themselves when they premiered, as were even the works of established American composers like Aaron Copland or George Gershwin.

Did you know that Sarah Brightman had a huge hit (and sexy video) with the Linda Ronstadt written song "Winter Light"?

Yes, Sarah's version is beautiful. I asked my Mum to listen to the original version by Linda and then Sarah's and tell me which she liked best...she picked Sarah's.

I worked with a guy who claimed his favorite singer was Sarah Brightman.
One day I played him the two versions of Winter Light and asked him who sang it best-- he did not know the identity of either singer-- and he chose Linda's version. Apparently he wasn't a big enough fan of Sarah Brightman to even recognize her voice.

Sarah's version of Winter Light in the video was so sexy that PBS deleted it from the their special. All the other songs from the album were aired but because she was naked, mostly....they wouldn't show it. Love Sarah Brightman.
Classical Music was good for the period known as the enlightenment but with a large part of our population voting for dumb and dumber and now Trump the musical choice of the day will reflect a different mentality. If they want to make classical more popular it needs to be featured in movies, tv, videos....do music hybrids, new media, etc.

I prefer the ethereal quality of Linda's voice in Winter Light. Valentina Lisitsa is my favorite classical pianist, she built her performing/recording career on youtube.

I prefer Linda's version of Winter Light to Sarah Brightman's- nothing wrong with either one- I really like the Brightman CD I have that has that song. It came with a separate disc that had the video. Someone has purloined the video disc but I still have the CD. I actually prefer Sarah Brightman's sexy video to Linda Ronstadt's video, of which I really recall nothing.

I actually prefer Sarah Brightman's sexy video to Linda Ronstadt's video, of which I really recall nothing. Likewise, I prefer Linda's original to Sarah's although I am a big fan of Sarah as well. I kind of wonder though, is her version of Linda's Winter Light still one of her concert staples? I haven't seen a new performance in some time. Back around 2000, she recorded a version of the Bee Gees' sadly beautiful song First of May, which has been featured in many of her concerts. If memory serves, there was a video on youtube where she performed Winter Light followed by First of May. I haven't seen it in a while but think it's been taken down. Versions of both songs closely follow the arrangements of the originals, although Sarah's version of First of May also featured horns and a choir in addition to strings. It's obvious both songs were and are favorite of hers and when she has performed them, the classical audiences seem to like them just as much. And you have to wonder, do they seek out the originals???
