Over the years, I have seen many singers that I have enjoyed, but my tastes must be only middling mainstream, because the ones I like usually end up in the bottom part of the Top 10.
On this season of American Idol, I preferred Rayvon, who was in the Bottom Two for 5 weeks or so, but did manage to fight his way up to the Top 4.
As much as I do enjoy watching Idol, even tho I say I probably wouldn't bother if my wife didn't watch, I've only once bought something they've put out. Adam Lambert- Mad World. But I'm really not in the demographic they aim for.

Dianna - I didn't mean to sound like I was dismissing artists from these kind of shows or saying some people should or shouldn't be this or that.
Other than the Season that Mariah Carey was a judge I have never watched one of these shows from beginning to end. I wasn't blown away with Leon Jackson's singing on the few shows I watched but after he had won and I heard a couple of singles and then bought the album which I enjoy listening to. I had heard the hype over Sam Bailey and watched her singing 'The Power Of Love' and 'New York, New York' and thought her voice was great, again I enjoyed the album.
Jennifer Hudson I didn't become a fan of for a few years, not because I didn't like her to begin with for any reason but because I hadn't heard of her. She has won her Oscar and Grammy awards by the time I became a fan. I ordered both her albums and have been a fan since. (I still haven't listened to the 3rd album yet).
As for Dami Im, I am a fan of Australian singer/songwriter Dannii Minogue and she had tweeted about Dami winning the Australian X Factor and I watched a few performances on YouTube and I liked her voice too. (Ironically Dannii was the mentor for both Leon Jackson and Dami Im but on different Seasons and in different countries).
So I became a fan of these four singers from reality singing shows simply because I liked their singing and I didn't have any problems from how they started out. I listen to between 60 and 70 artists and I still have a lot of albums to learn so it's almost impossible to be adding more artists to my CD collection, but if I feel the talent is there with someone then I would become a fan. I did this with Linda not long before Christmas,I knew her back catalogue was big and would cost me a lot of money and take me a lot of time to get through it but I heard THAT voice as everyone on here has and couldn't help but become a fan.

Damien, You state who you like without putting others down.. that isn't being dismissive. There are plenty on these talent shows I like. and I can't even explain why.. for example, Siobhan Magnus is another idol alumni who I love.. I connect to her and her music draws me in. I just have to keep listening..she's dark, moody and probably hangs out in cemetery's and I like that. lol.. but I also like Carrie Underwood, she isn't edgy . she's more reserved, standoffish and something tells me you still don't want to mess with her. lol.. part of me relates to that too.. I'm not a big fan of the diva's. like Mariah, Cristina, Whitney.. Celine.. but others are. you can't deny their talent.. so a lot of music artists.. art. is who we connect to and relate to.. I think..which shouldn't discount other singers because those artists probably have the same affects for different reasons on other people.
