With the notable exception of Elvis Costello, I think nearly every "songwriter" said Linda's version was better than their own "singer" version (based on the articles, album covers, and quotes I've read over the years).

As I mentioned before, Linda's talent and generosity has helped many people's careers. As far as Elvis Costello & Alison, maybe he should have been more appreciative at the time:
Linda Ronstadt recorded this on her 1978 Living in the USA album and released the song as a single. The single didn't chart on the Hot 100 - a rare miss for Ronstadt, who was very popular at the time. The album, however, sold over two million copies, providing Costello with substantial royalties as the writer of one of its 10 tracks. He credits these earnings with keeping him afloat in the early years before he caught on.

Well, at least back in the period 1978-1980, being appreciative was something that Costello hadn't learned to be, not only towards Linda but also towards some other American rockers of note. And even though he did acknowledge what the royalties did for him during those years, that didn't happen until, I believe, close to twenty years after the fact.
And, if memory serves me right, the man doesn't have a single Top 40 hit to his name as an artist in America.

"everyday i write the book" was us # 36 pop chart. no singles list on his Wikipedia page. I looked that song by itself which is the only one I thought might have. I think I heard his Alison once or twice so I wouldn't think it was a top 40 hit. there may be one or 2 more. He softened on Linda and others he disrespected most notably on Linda as he ended up changing and doing many syles over the years and would imo be a hypocrite if he did not recant based on the path he followed. He was supposedly punk late 70's-early 80's as I remember but "Everyday" was from 1983 and though purposely formulatic and written in 10 mins; it is a true soft pop song eddiejinnj

Seriously , I don't understand the snob attitude in the rock world about performers who don't write music. I remember reading criticism of LR for that very reason. But I don't recall every reading any criticism of Pavarotti for not writing his own operas that he sang and interpreted. I don't recall Frank Sinatra getting ripped apart for not writing the American Standards he sang. I don't remember Whitney Houston getting picked on for not writing music. Please why was that such an issue for Linda Ronstadt??
You don't have the courage to do something creative but WOULD like to shit on those who do? Be a critic! Risk nothing AND get to be a cunt!

Unfortunately, that attitude is too often shared by fellow musicians and artists who should know better (IMHO).

1. Hasten Down The Wind 2. Hasten Down The Wind 3. Hasten Down The Wind 4. Hasten Down The Wind 5. Hasten Down The Wind Seriously, it is THE quintessential Ronstadt album. First songs that she recorded in Spanish, two songs she wrote, her liveliest rocker. I love that practically the whole thing is a weepfest. It closes with a song about lonely prostitutes. It's a stunner. In my opinion "Down So Low" The Tattler" and "Try Me Again" are the standout tracks. This album won her the Grammy, not for just the title song, but the whole thing. Plus that LP COVER! I can hardly agree more about your "Best x 5" rating. Hasten down the Wind is my favorite album of all time, by anyone. However, I don't know where you get the idea that STLDBM is about prostitutes. Did Karla Bonoff say so? I thought it was simply a song about loneliness in Los Angeles in the 1970s. People were running around having sex like maniacs, and not being able to get laid when you wanted to could be stressful. But no one was charging for it. I know. I lived there. It was my theme song. Here are the lyrics: There's somebody waiting alone in the street For someone to walk up and greet Here you are all alone in the city Where's the love that you took to your side Lonely faces will stare through your eyes in the night
And they'll say Woman sweet woman Please come home with me You're shining and willing and free But your love is a common occurrence Not like love that I feel in my heart Still you know that may be what I need
Is someone to lay down beside me And even though it's not real Just someone to lay down beside me You're the story of my life
Someone to lay down beside me And even though it's not real Just someone to lay down beside me You're the story of my life
The morning is breaking The street lights are off The sun will soon share all the cost Of a world that can be sort of heartless Not like love that I feel in my heart Still you know that may be all you'll get
Is someone to lay down beside you And even though it's not real Just someone to lay down beside you You just can't ask for more.

1.Heart like a Wheel. 2.Winter Light 3.Hasten Down the Wind 4.Mad Love 5.Prisoner in Disguise I really think her best singing is on Winter Light but Heart Like a Wheel was very special for me.Lose Again from HDTW still think to this day is one of her best vocal.Mad Love I saw her Boston Concert and was blown away she said she had a cold did not sound like it to me ,also saw her coming out of Manchester Music she waved The title track on Prisoner still slays me.Cry like a Rainstorm has to be right up there also the vocals all through the album is sublime.

thank God she won it for an album not a single. she has been nominated like 7-8 times (a near record if not tied) for best female pop and this was her only win. she was almost the susan lucci of music. the simple dreams Grammy show was ridiculous. she won nothing for it. also, it was too bad the timing of PID as i guess it missed out on deadlines for inclusion. eddiejinnj

Losing to both Melissa Manchester and Pat Benatar in the same year (1982) (in two different categories) does seem strange, but only until one realizes that"Get Closer", as a single, surprisingly stalled out at #29 on the singles chart. But I would suspect that the choice of Irene Cara over Linda probably resulted from the voters not being completely sure that Linda hadn't gone insane by releasing an album of pre-rock pop standards in the same year that Thriller stole all the attention, this even though that album, What's New, came perilously close to selling enough copies at one point to dethrone Thriller from the #1 slot on the album chart.

I think Benatar's quote was (after winning the Grammy over Ronstadt in 1980, according to Wikipedia): " There are a lot of good female singers around. How could I be the best? Ronstadt is still alive!" What a great quote!
