Linda Ronstadt-Don Lane Show 27th October 1983
Linda is interviewed via satellite on Don Lane's Australian Variety Show talking about her What's New album before paying out on the American media. A very candid Linda and delightful to watch!

Gee-- Don't know why Linda never made Barbara Walter's list of "Most Fascinating People." She certainly is a lot more intriguing than Taylor Swift!!!

Thanks for posting. I had never seen this interview. I don't recall her ever discussing "South Africa" in any other interview and I've always wanted to hear her discuss that topic.

Up until this time, I guess I thought her trip to South Africa in 1983 at the height of the apartheid regime was a serious blight on her career--one of the few times I have ever seriously disagreed with her on anything. After this interview, which was done only a few months after that, yes, controversial act of hers, I have come around to see her point; and the fact that Rolling Stone, which jumped all over her for it (and his high holy eminence Mr. Wenner probably used South Africa as a battering ram to keep her out of the RRHOF until last April) while having ads in their magazines by companies that did business down there at that same time, just acted totally hypocritical towards her.
I also like her potshot at Rupert Murdoch, whom I don't think most Americans really knew about back then, or even took seriously until his News Corporation took control of 20th Century Fox and steered it politically to the Right of Attila The Hun. She was very good-natured throughout that interview--another high point among a whole long list of high points in her career (IMHO).

Don Lane is a delight and this interview shows a not-shy, self-assured and irreverent Linda Ronstadt. Her points about her trip to South Africa were right on and are probably why Paul Simon became her kindred spirit and later sang on Graceland together. Love the slams of Reagan, Murdock and the Rolling Stone. There is lots in there to digest and worth a second listen.

Looks like Murdoch hasn't changed much over the decades:
Rupert Murdoch's arguably ill-advised tweet has been condemned by Twitter users for being “insensitive”.
The News International boss and managing director of Australia’s News Limited congratulated the Australian Daily Telegraph for being the first to report on the “bloody outcome” of the Sydney siege.
