On tonight's (Friday, Oct. 31) PBS NewsHour there was a segment about "what the sales of Taylor Swift's latest music release says about the music industry." I saw a Tweet about this earlier that said that Swift sold more than one million units in just one week. For a frame of reference, Barbra Streisand's latest "Partners" has sold 530,000 units in six weeks. Here is the PBS NewsHour segment --

Well, Taylor is also a great saleswoman. Would that I could say the same for her voice (which I still don't like much) and her "new sound" (which I think is bizarre at best). And, of course, the generic horror film reaction shot (LOL)

I will never be a Taylor Swift fan however in light of the antics of some of her peers, like Miley, Taylor Swift has at least stayed away from Miley type stuff

I don't know that I'd exactly call the twerking she does in the "Shake It Off" staying away from the Miley Cyrus influence, however.

Watched the video for the first time. She is taking a dip into Mileys world. Hopefully she wont go full blown Miley

Hopefully not, but I wouldn't bet the house that she won't. I just don't think going the full Miley is very smart, especially not when your voice isn't all that great to begin with, and your shift in musical styles seems just so disreputably "trendy."

Taylor Swift may not be the world's best singer/songwriter, but she's no dummy. She also has a knack for connecting with her fans, which doesn't hurt. The music biz has changed dramatically and it's all about the marketing strategies. After all, both Linda's and Taylor's CDs are being sold at Starbucks.

I don't doubt that she's got a way of connecting with people...right now. But she's got a lot of work to do to get up to where she's in Linda's league, or any other great singer's league, because she is doing almost everything surface, and not much in the way of deepness (IMHO).

Hopefully, she'll find out, and soon. She's going to look (and sound) kind of ridiculous if she's still doing this at 30 or 35, let alone 25 (which she'll reach next month, on December 13th).

Agree she must be a smart girl. She can laugh all the way to the bank as they say. But the teen bopper stuff is gonna get old pretty soon. Thats another thing about Linda R. Teeny bopper she wasnt even when she was Taylor Swifts age.

Linda once said (and I'm paraphrasing here) `music is a reflection of the political landscape only the music is ahead of the politics`. If this is true, and I have no reason to think it isn't, then given the state of "popular" music as epitomized by TS and given the abysmal election results-we are in for a bad time both musically and politically.

Could we imagine Linda springing up onto the stage from a reverse trap-door like TS does to delight her fans?

Um....No (LOL). Likewise, I can't imagine (at least not at this point in time, if ever) T-Swift doing anything from Linda's catalog without becoming a shrinking violet in front of the whole world.

Sorry, I never have been able to make it past about 45 seconds of one of Taylors songs. Too much auto tuning..

And therein lies the problem that I think most of us have had with Ms. Swift from the beginning. Her over-reliance on Autotune can mean only one thing, that she really can't sing on pitch or key without that studio net under her, or she'd fall right through it.

did anyone catch her performance at the AMA's? I couldn't understand a word she sang. She does know how to shmooze/hobnob with the older and classic artists (Diana Ross) no wonder she has built this empire up around her.. it's not from sheer talent.. . And siting and partying in the front row with the cool people.. (Lorde) it just seems so deliberate.

After watching last nights fiasco.. it's clear to me. people are "settling," with these music heroes nowadays. It was pure crap. All of it.

Quotes by Dianna:
Taylor does know how to schmooze and hobnob with the best of them (Diana Ross especially)--but again, it's all the surface stuff designed to grab quick attention, and no substance to sustain a career over the long haul (IMHO).
And in the end, the AMAs are always good for letting one remember once more the infamous words of H.L. Mencken: "Nobody ever went broke underestimating the intelligence of the American public."

Having watched the Linda/Aaron bits posted by Ausfan2 then listening to TS I can't help thinking how far music has degraded. My only comfort is that long after TS is forgotten, Schubert, Gruber, Neville and Ronstadt will live on!

I think she knows how to schmooze the fans too.. showing up at their doorsteps bearing gifts lol. I mean, that's a nice gesture but it's very calculating. maybe she should run for office? I'd say it is true, people who aren't really that good fade away and the music not remembered for it's artistry.. Something tells me.. she will find a way around that. lol

The worst thing about this is that, in the eight years she's been around, I have really made a concerted effort to try and really like her, though I don't think I could conceive of her usurpring Linda in my mind's jukebox. I am, of course, well beyond her age demographic anyway, but I have tried to be open about her stuff just the same.
Thus far, I can name only one song of hers that shows her to be anywhere close to the kind of caliber of singer that we hear in Linda--"Begin Again", from her 2012 album Red, which is in a kind of acoustic folk/country/rock vein, and where her voice doesn't sound too terribly processed by that dreaded Autotune gimmickry. Beyond that, though, again, she's just all flash and little, arguably zero, substance.

I like her well enough but I wouldn't compare her to any of the early Pop greats, especially Linda whose shoulders she and most of todays female artists stand on. If the roles were reversed with Linda being the young woman today and with today's influences &talent would have blown everyone away. Linda was a product of her time just as Taylor is today. She seems to be keeping the music biz of old somewhat alive today but their greed will eventually do them in once and for all with or without Taylor.
