Season 4 begins Oct 8th, on FX. I'm happy they brought back kathy Bates and Evan Peters. From what I understand Jessica Lange's character runs a circus in Jupiter Florida ,circa 1950's.Angela Bassett's character appears to have 3 boobies! lol.. I've loved all 3 seasons thus far.

Based on your recommendation I have started watching this season. I have always been fascinated by the residents of Jupiter, Florida- Lobster Boy, Percilla the Monkey Girl, etc. Have you seen the 1932 movie "Freaks"?

I haven't seen the movie but I did look it up on youtube.. actually I was kind of shocked a movie of that sort was around in 1932. I understand it was banned back then, probably too weird for the times.. So far I've liked all seasons of AHS. That clown is very disturbing to me and I don't have a clown phobia

The movie Freaks was banned I think because it was thought that the freaks were being exploited, with all the parts in the movie being played by the actual people with these genetic deformities. However, opportunities for the disabled were few, and some of these people were able to make a decent living off the exploitation. One of my favorites in the movie was Johnny Eck, the Half-boy, who miraculously lived to the age of 79, dying in the early 1990s.

I'll have to look up the movie. I also heard there was a similar show on HBO Carnivale.

I heard Season 5 of AHS is in the works. Ryan Murphy said there were 2 clues given in the premiere show last week? What could that be? Jupiter (Florida) and Elsa Mars.. ? Aliens? Outer space? I'd like to write to him and suggest he film in Astoria Oregon.. or the outskirts where I live.. with all the wooded areas and old victorian buildings it would be super creepy...

Last week's episode (I haven't watched this week yet) had a scene that was lifted straight out of the Freaks movie. The scene where they were gathered around the table chanting "kill the copper" was very much like the "one of us, one of us" scene from the movie.

I'm loving this season, especially Kathy Bates as the Bearded Lady. Her "six months to live" scene with the doctor was superb.
Freaks, the movie, is just a nightmare. Granted, you have to bear some creaky melodramatics and uneasy line readings by the by the titular characters (it was originally planned as a silent), but boy, does it deliver with the imagery, especially that night scene in the rain when the "freaks" take their revenge on the "normals". The image of Johnny Eck, and others, crawling through the mud in a storm will never leave you.

re Kathy Bates.. I can't figure out which part of the US her accent is from? The more I hear it, the more it sounds like dr evil. must be an older eastern or mid west???

According to an article I read recently written by a linguist, the accent is Baltimore dredged through the Appalachians.

Dandy and his mother (didn't recognize Francis Conroy at first -big fan of Six Feet Under) are freakin' me out the most!! Occasionally as an inside "joke" my husband and I will bang on a dining room table and repeat "One of Us, one of Us" - another iconic reference to Freaks. A film as frightening as it is tender. In Freaks the performers were in fact physically as portrayed. I think the "pinheads" on AH are just actors in makeup and flipper man and some others are special effects. The little little lady is a real gal?
And while on the subject of human oddities The Hilton Sisters were a well known cajoined act. They were featured in Freaks and had a "relatively " successful career in that offbeat world. There was a musical called "Sideshow" about them back in 1990s -it failed at the time but is being remounted this fall on Broadway.
And in other related trivia the real Lobster Boy/Man was a brutal husband and father who repeatedly committed domestic violence and killed his wife. Long way from the sounds of Linda but in keeping with the season ...

The seal man is the real deal, those are his real arms.. some of the other actors are too, the woman with no legs, she goes by the name of "legless suzi," in her real life, she's married and mother of 2. The little lady, she's real too.. I think she's so damn cute. lol

I wonder where this season is going. I think it might end very similarly to the 1932 Freaks movie, and the con man will become "one of us."

Tony have you watched the other seasons? I understand per Ryan Murphy there will be a connection between all the other seasons.. Season 2 Asylum takes place in the 1960's. Murder House and Coven take place in now times. but supposedly all are connected. . I think the tables will turn on the con man (denis o hare)

This is the first season I have actually watched the show. I downloaded last season but haven't yet had or taken the time to watch any of it.
Which season do you consider to be the best?

1 and 2 are really good. I think 2 is more similar to Freakshow, the woman who plays pepper (the pin head girl) is also in 2, same character. I loved Coven as well. Hard for me to choose.

I think last nights show was the final straw that creep'd me out the most. Poor Meryl Streep's daughter (Penny) and Ma Petit..
