My gosh, I watched that band from England last night on Sullivan and I have to admit, as strange as they look, they were gear! I couldn't believe how fab they sounded and looked. My sisters were crowded in front of the television that I had to push them out of the way so I can see. My parents were in disbelief during that time with my dad very angry saying they looked like girls with their long hair and stuff. My mom was indifferent and thinks they'll be forgotten in six months or so. They still hate Elvis also.
But for me, it's like aliens arrived here in the States. I've never seen anyone that looks like them. It's unreal, I cannot explain it, but I think these four lads from Liverpool (how funny is that name?) are going to be big! And to think they'll have a couple more appearances on Sullivan the next two weeks--one from Miami too with Mitzi Gaynor! I cannot wait (for The Fab Four that is, not Mitzi.)!
Funny, it was the talk of school today and all my girl classmates were debating which Beatle was cuter. Seems like Paul is the favoured one, but I could be wrong. Each time a girl said one of their names, they would just shriek in hysterics--funny lot they are!
I also got heckled by my guy classmates for having my hair like them cats from The Beatles--"Hey did you forget to comb your hair?"; "Hey, I thought you were a girl!"--but I know better. I bet that hairstyle is going to catch on and buzz cuts will be the funny style. I'll bet ya big bucks on that prediction! In fact, this one girl who I think is pretty really liked that I washed the grease from my hair and just left my head unkempt. She thought I looked like Ringo. I'm going to give her a Valentine's Day card this Friday, I think I am. But I digress...
Because of this performance, I am going to take up the guitar and start a band! They made it look so cool being a musician and with all those girls screaming for them, what red-blooded American boy wouldn't want that?!
I think I saw the future last night, and they are The Beatles.
Beatles forever!

^^Yes, I understand what you're saying there as I felt that way too when Holly died, but I truly believe these cats from England are going to be bigger than Elvis! And you can quote me on that too!
And speaking of Elvis, wasn't it cool how he and the Colonel sent The Beatles a telegram wishing them success in our country? I thought that was very nice of them to do so. It's kind of like a passing of the torch, don't you think?
When I got home from school today (gosh, I hate school. So much homework to do!), my mom told me she talked with my Aunt Lizzie (we call her Dizzie Miss Lizzie, ha, ha) who lives in NYC and she says the city is still buzzing about The Beatles. In fact, she mentioned that my cousin Michelle (hmmm, I wonder if The Beatles can write a song with that name?) has been hanging out at The Plaza Hotel all weekend hoping to get a glimpse of The Beatles. So far, no luck, but besides sending all her loving to us (From Me To You she jokes), she did mention that The Beatles will be playing Carnegie Hall this Wednesday night after they come back from their Washington DC concert tomorrow night! Two shows too! She is trying her darndest to score tickets to the show, but so far, has not been lucky. I really hope she does, so that way I can proudly say that my cousin actually saw The Beatles in person, which would make me then the most popular kid in class--well, at least with the girls! Perhaps, it might even make that girl who I like a lot, Anna, see me in a different light. We'll see! If not, maybe I can just sing "This Boy" to her this Friday?
I must be the only male in my class who likes The Beatles. All my guy friends keep ribbing me about them saying that Fabian and Avalon are way better. Or that Vinton and Sedaka will be still around in the 70's while The Beatles will be forgotten by next month. But deep inside me, I bet you we will all be talking about this band 50 years from now!
To me, Elvis is dead. He died when he went to the army. The Beatles are what's happening now and will be happening for a long time. I will even say that our children's children will be digging them in the distant future.
There is no limits with this band and I wouldn't be surprised if they write a song with an orchestra accompanying them! We'll see. You may laugh now, but mark my words: The Beatles are no Hello, Goodbye band!

My other cousin who is a big Elvis fan says this photo of Elvis was taken shortly before the Beatles arrived in America. I think it was telefaxed (whatever that means) to us and only took two hours for us to receive it: Even Elvis recognizes he may be usurped by these guys!

I think my dad is upset with me knowing that I am keeping my hair this way from now on. At first, he was laughing this morning thinking it was a joke, but when he saw at dinner that it was still down, let’s just say he wasn’t in a good mood. He is threatening to take me to the barber soon if I don’t clean up my appearance, yet I don’t care.
Anyway, just got exciting news from my cousin Michelle whose persistence paid off tonight. We just got off the phone with her (person to person of course) and at first she was unintelligible because she was so excited, but when she calmed down, she told us she saw The Beatles get into their limo as they were going out on the town tonight! Oh, how I wish I was there in NYC instead of being holed up in the Black Mining Hills, South Dakota!
Now while she was thrilled in seeing them, what really rocked her world was being interviewed by some disc-jockey named Murray The K. Seems he and his sidekick Cousin Brucie of WINS, 1010 AM are THE top platter spinners in NYC, who also are getting exclusives from The Beatles themselves. Guess, Murray the K is calling himself the 5th Beatle now.
Anyway, according to Michelle, after seeing the Beatles drive off, Murray decided to broadcast live and talk to the fans that were still milling around the hotel area. And Michelle was the lucky one indeed. Fortunate too that her friend Loretta had a reel-to-reel recorder to tape the interview. Luckily for us, she played the recording over the phone and with me being a fast writer, I took careful transcription of the interview:

Murray The K: Murray The K live at the entrance of The Plaza Hotel and there are still a lot of fans milling about. So let’s see who we have here. And what is your name? Michelle: Michelle Murray: Ah, Michelle, ma belle. A lovely name. Michelle: Did you just call me a bell? Murray: No, it’s ma belle. Just a rhyme I made up. Michelle: Oh, ok Murray. Murray: So how long have you been here at The Plaza. Michelle: Oh um..Yesterday and today, The Night Before, Friday too. Murray: Gee, that’s a Long, Long, Long time to Wait. Michelle: It has. I’m So Tired, but I Feel Fine. Seems I’ve been here like Eight Days A Week. Murray: Nights too? Michelle: Yea. I’m losing track of the time. Oh, at least Here Comes The Sun! Murray: Sorry, but that’s not the sun, but Mr. Moonlight. Michelle: Told you I am out of it--it’s been a Hard Day’s Night so to speak. Murray: Interesting. Anyway, Tell Me Why do you like The Beatles? Michelle: I don’t know, it’s the music, the look that makes us Come Together and go crazy for them. Every Little Thing they do takes me and others on some Magical Mystery Tour! (Another fan shouting): Hey Murray! Murray: Hi, What Goes On? (Other fan): You broadcasting live? Murray: Yes, you’re live on WINS, 1010! What’s your name? (Other fan): Jude. Murray: Hey Jude! So what do you want to say? Jude: Wouldn’t it be fab if The Things We Said Today might become a future Beatle song title? Murray: Like what? Jude: Um, I don’t know---Something! Murray: Ok, you work hard on that but in the meantime it’s back to Michelle. Since you’ve been here all weekend, shouldn’t you Get Back to where you once belong? Your Mother Should Know you’re ok, right? Michelle: I should and I know I’ll be in trouble When I Get Home, but I would follow The Beatles Here, There And Everywhere just to be near them. Any Time At All! Murray: Follow them everywhere? Michelle: Yes! I’d go Across The Universe or Follow The Sun for them! They’re the best thing to happen In My Life! Murray: That’s devotion! Michelle: Yes It Is! Murray: So what’s next for you? By the way who are your friends with you? Michelle: Yeah, yeah, yeah, --um, that’s Julia, the one holding the recorder is Loretta Martin, Rita is behind me--we call her Lovely Rita--and next to her is her boyfriend Bill. Bungalow Bill that is! Murray: So they’re here for support. Michelle: You know it--I get by With A Little Help From My Friends! Murray: True indeed. So getting back to my question, what’s next? The Beatles are off to Washington tomorrow. Are you going to wait here? Michelle: No, I think we’re going to Drive My Car to DC and hope to get to see the concert there! Murray: You know it’s sold out, don’t you? Michelle: Oh bummer! Now I’m Down. But We Can Work It Out somehow. Murray: But what if I told you I can get you to that show without even having to drive there? Michelle: You better not be kidding me, Murray. If I Fell for your antics… Murray: This is no joke. Tickets to the concert and a Ticket To Ride the train The Beatles will be on tomorrow! Michelle: (frantic screaming) Murray: And tickets for your friends too! Michelle: I don’t know what to say, I’ve Got A Feeling this will be in my memory forever! Murray: Only on WINS 1010AM can we Help you out! You know, you are one lucky Girl! It could have been Another Girl, you know. Like this one. What’s your name? Girl: Eleanor. Eleanor Rigby. Murray: Sorry Eleanor, but Michelle was the lucky one. Eleanor: Yea, I wish you had another one for just the Two Of Us…(sobbing) Murray: Ok, Michelle, I’ll Get You and your friends tomorrow for the trip to DC! Michelle: Thanks so much Murray! Murray: No, Thank You Girl! Now let’s send it back to Cousin Brucie with another Beatles Triple rRpple, triple play! Only here on your Beatles station WINS, 1010!

And while Elvis might have wished them success here in America in public, privately he had every reason in the world to be worried. I don't think Elvis was ever worried. Maybe embarrassed though because by the time the Beatles made their US debut, the quality of his songs went back and forth between being of a good quality and being of a mediocre quality. That was a time when Parker should've upped the game by insisting on a higher quality of songs and Elvis going into the studio to work on non-soundtrack songs. Instead, the status quo of low budget movie songs prevailed. But, the US was Beatle crazy - insanely so - and by that point Elvis was old guard rock and roll. It's possible Elvis could've recorded and released songs of a higher caliber but in the all things Beatle era, it might not have done any good.

And while Elvis might have wished them success here in America in public, privately he had every reason in the world to be worried. I bet he is. It seems these young upstarts are really making an impression on America--and not just the fans, but the journalists! They are witty, funny, charming and can throw it right back at the press who are pretty skeptical of them anyhow. But I think they are just fab! Too bad Elvis is concentrating on movies now--maybe with The Beatles being the new kings of rock n roll, he can revert to just recording like he did before all this Hollywood nonsense. Besides, the only flick I enjoyed of his was Jailhouse Rock and that was a semi-autobiography account of his (early) career. I wonder if The Fab Four will make a movie too? Perhaps, an account of their life as Beatles. That would be great, probably really funny too! Hate to say this, but The Colonel should take a page from the Brian Epstein managerial guide to know how to really manage superstars. He's (the Colonel that is) putting Elvis in a rut with these b-movies. Rumour has it that a movie called Viva Las Vegas comes out this May co-starring Ann-Margaret. I don't think I'll see it...

Ah, what a morning. I somehow convinced my mom I was sick so I can stay home today and with it being a public holiday tomorrow (Lincoln's birthday) why not extend my personal time?
My Aunt Lizzie just called to say that Michelle is so excited about her trip to DC to see The Beatles live. According to her, Murray The K was true to his word and is providing the tickets to the concert as well as the trave tickets. Initially, The Beatles were supposed to fly to Washington but a snowstorm on the East Coast has altered their plans, by suggestion from Murray himself. To which Brian did just that! She hopes the concert is still on though.
Michelle says that they will be travelling by an express train called, get this, The Congressman from Trenton, NJ to Washington DC. Boarding time is at 11:59. And dig this too, they had to rent a special sleeper carriage called The King George to be attached to The Congressman for The Beatles and the press to ride in! Wow!
She'll keep Aunt Lizzie in the know who in turn will inform us! So excited for her!
The Beatles are in America! So gear!
And I will never forget this week--never!

Still no word from Aunt Lizzie, but I've been busy anyway, ear plastered to my transistor radio (transistor sister!) waiting for Beatles' tunes or playing constantly Meet The Beatles on the turntable, thinking how the show will be tonight, what they're doing now, are they there yet, etc.?

She's there! Train got in at 3:04pm and she says there were about 2000 fans who braved 8" of snow to greet them there! She said the train ride was fun although the Beatles were relegated to the back of the train but they were able to walk around the other parts when needed. The brief time she did see them, she says they were joking with the press, just being themselves. She even said at times the four of them were signing autographs even though the people were getting their names wrong. After arriving, Michelle and her friends were whisked away to a local HoJo's while The Beatles gave a press conference at the Uline Arena aka The Washington Coliseum by the locals, site of tonight's concert. That begins at 8pm she says and tickets, even though her's were free, ranged from $2-4. That's a lot if you ask me! She thinks after the interview they took pictures by The Capitol before being shuttled to the Shoreham Hotel whom, according to Murray says they have blocked off the entire seventh floor! Again a photo via telefax shows them at the Capitol!: Michelle said she will report after the concert, what they played, what it was like and maybe even send some pictures after they are developed. Wish those could be instant for who knows how long that will take. But still wow!

Ah, good question. I bet they are, for somehow I believe the President can pull a lot of strings to get them there.
Yea, telefaxing is neat but I wish they had something where, I don't know how to explain it, you can can get instantaneous communication between those big computers I've seen that fill government hallways. Where one can type out a real live to the minute event into one computer and then the recipient at the other computer gets that information seconds later.
Or better yet, I wish they invent a small size phone that has a built in camera which can fit in a shirt pocket, so that way my cousin can take pictures of the concert tonight and of the Johnson sisters too! I heard Polaroid is trying to make a camera where it can develop a picture soon after it's taken, but they feel it won't come out for another 8 years or so. Ah, wishful thinking. As for that camera phone, it probably won't happen until 1999!
Hope my cousin brought a camera tonight--she has a Pentax, I believe.

Less than half an hour before the show begins. Supposedly, according to Michelle, there are three opening acts before the Liverpool lads take the stage: Jay & The Americans, The Righteous Brothers and Tommy Roe.
Wouldn't it be cool if there was a way for The Beatles to keep their fans informed of what they were doing or what they are thinking at that moment? Maybe just a quick short update on what they are feeling sent to each fan everywhere at the same time, and quickly! As if it were spoken by a Tweety bird or something. Maybe call it a tweet for short!
Pipe dreams...

^I think we will fulfill JFK's challenge of landing a man on the moon by the end of the decade. I really do.
Call me crazy, but sharing photos taken from a small phone, in sharp quality yet, could happen. I just don't know how though. Who knows too, someday we might be able to communicate without wires and cables--as if they are wireless.
Very Twilight Zone.

Just got off the phone (a station to station call) with my cousin, and she is still in hysterics. She said that tonight was THE greatest night of her life--ever! She was so wound up from the show, she can't calm down. But she did so just enough for me to get the vibe of the show she just fantastically witnessed. Luckily, for me, I have a gift for remembering every word she said. Or to paraphrase at least. Michelle first tells me that the Coliseum is more like a boxing arena and that the stage was dead center, meaning The Beatles were playing in the round. She estimates the sold out crowd being around 8,092 people with most of them being girls. She noted on her Timex watch that the lads from Liverpool hit the stage at 8:31 pm and played 12 songs which lasted about 35 minutes. She then stated the songs played: - Roll Over Beethoven (sung by George)
- From Me To You (John & Paul)
- I Saw Her Standing There (John & Paul but mainly Paul)
- This Boy (John, Paul & George)
- All My Loving (Paul with John & George)
- I Wanna Be Your Man (Ringo!)
- Please Please Me (John & Paul)
- Till There Was You (Paul)
- She Loves You (John & Paul)
- I Want To Hold Your Hand (John & Paul)
- Twist & Shout (John with Paul & George)
- Long Tall Sally (Paul)
Interestingly, she said The Beatles kept moving around so as to give every part of the arena a chance to see them perform and when they did, Mal Evans and Brian Sommerville had to spin Ringo's wobbly stage to wherever the Beatles would be facing. And she said the screams were deafening! It's a wonder how The Fabs could even hear themselves, she thought. She also noted that people were throwing jelly beans at the boys all night with Ringo getting belted the most, or so it seemed to her. Plus the stage was surrounded by Washington's finest and the many press journalist too snapping a lot of pictures. But the best part she witnessed was that CBS was filming the concert and according to Murray The K, it might be broadcast at a later date at the cinema. In addition, she saw people in the crowd taping the show on reel-to-reels, or on their own 8mm cameras. Michelle was able to get some pictures and will share them once developed but nothing can compare with actually being there and seeing them live. She is still in la-la land and I don't think she'll come down for a long time. Luckily, they are staying overnight in Washington, just like The Beatles, and then heading back by train to NYC. As for The Beatles, Murray said they were invited to visit the British Embassy after the show. Wow--now how can I sleep knowing this happened? Her last words? A splendid time was guaranteed for all...

We'll put men on the moon when the Mets win the World Series... Ha, that may be a long time then for either event. If The Mets do win a World Series, that would be Amazin'! (Hmm, The Amazin' Mets--has a pretty fab ring to it.) I think I can boldly say that The Beatles might play Shea before the Mets play a World Series game there! I am predicting The Beatles at Shea in '65!

Michelle just made an early morning phone call (collect) saying that she and her friends will be on an early train ride back to NYC and that The Fab Four, along with the journalists, will be on the same ride too!
Good thing I was awake to take the call for I couldn't sleep anyhow still thinking of what she said about the concert last night and too, it being Lincoln's birthday today (a public holiday, mind you), no school today.
She's hoping this time to try and talk with each Beatle and have Loretta, with her ever-trusty reel-to-reel recorder, tape these "interviews." She says Loretta has got a lot of great stuff on tape, from the Murray The K interview to the concert last night. So to have an interview with each Beatle would be the gear. She just hopes she doesn't come off as a thick, soft, slag (her words--she's using Beatle slang now).
We'll see how it goes.

I mean The Mets lost 120 games just two seasons ago, didn't they? Well, now my cousin is a bit of all right (dang, that daft Beatle slang is rubbing on me now)! She surprised and telefaxed us some photos from last night's concert that she got from some guy she sat next to named Al Gore--supposedly a son of a US Senator, who has connections to develop photos quick. No word yet if she's in NYC. Patiently waiting (barely)...

Michelle called to say they arrived some time ago, and that it was a madhouse at Penn Station as about 10,000 people (again due to the public holiday) were there to welcome them back. She said however, that at the last minute, the cops detached The Beatles' car from the rest of the train and led that one to an isolated platform. They were supposed to then take a special elevator out, but when that was foiled by screaming fans, the boys made a run to some nearby stairs and then hitched a ride to an idling taxi on 7th Ave. Michelle said it was crackers! And she said she took some photos of the hysteria there and will send those out as soon as they are developed.
She mentioned though, that due to the spotlight and grueling schedule,The Beatles were looking exhausted. Ringo and George were still charming the press, but Paul and John were a little weary. Anyway, the best part she said was that she was able to talk to each Beatle alone and that Loretta recorded it on reel-to-reel! She said she'll play it on the next call as she wants to go home and rest as it has been an exhausting 6 days so far.
Now I can't wait to hear that talk!

Great reporting... so lucky she got to talk them all... Reel to reel is good quality but so bulky... It would be nice if though something that could record and then just fit in your pocket... Luckily for Loretta, it's an AIWA TP32A portable reel-to-reel recorder with a mic input where she can attach a mic and then hold it up for recording, or at least I am assuming that. Probably recorded the concert that way too. I like your idea of a pocket size recorder, but you know how we were talking about a phone with a camera? What if that same device also recorded video and its audio?! Speaking of recordings, since Michelle got home, she really couldn't rest that much as she is still in dreamland, so she gave me a call and played me the recordings. And again, I had to get every detail as best I could. Sometimes it's hard to hear things from a recorder over a phone but I think I got it all pretty darn good. The first "talk' was with Ringo! Michelle: Oh my gosh, there's Ringo! Ringo! Yoohoo, Ringo! Over here! Michelle: Ringo! Don't Pass Me By! Ringo: Oh, hello. Didn't see you there. Been moving so fast since coming to America. Michelle: That's ok. I'm just glad you can stop by! You're my favourite Beatle, you know! Ringo: Well, thank you--you're too kind (laughter)! Michelle: Can I ask you something, Ringo? Ringo: Sure. Michelle: What goes on in your heart? What goes on in your mind? Ringo: Um, ah..what do you mean? Michelle: You are tearing me apart, when you are treating me so unkind. What goes on in your mind? Ringo: I, um...(pregnant pause) Michelle: Well, with you almost went by me, going so fast. Don't pass me by, don't make me cry, don't make me blue, ok Ringo? Ringo: Ok, but for some reason just now talking to you, I am feeling inspired. Like I have an idea for a song or two. I can't explain. Michelle: Well, I just wanted to say hi. Ringo: Nice talking to you. Must go--have to find a guitar or piano or something. (Ringo singing as he leaves): Don't pass me by, don't make me cry, don't make me blue...Hmmm

Here's the second talk with another Beatle. This time it's with Paul:
Michelle: You sure you got enough space on these reels, Loretta? Loretta: Trust me, Mish. I brought a lot of extra reels! We're covered. (both scream in hysterics) Michelle: Look, look Loretta, it's Paul! Hi Paul! Hi Paul! Paul: Oh hello. How are you two posh birds enjoying the trip? Michelle: Real gear, Paul, but what's even more gear is meeting you! You're my favourite Beatle you know! Paul: Why thank you, you're too kind! (Laughter) Michelle: Now Paul, I don't want to sound like every female fans that has a crush on you... Paul: Uh-huh. Michelle: But if we were dating, you wouldn't have to buy me a diamond ring, my friend, just to make me feel all right. You wouldn't have to get me anything, my friend, just to make me feel all right. Cuz Paul, I don't care too much about money, for money can't buy me love. Paul: Can't buy me love? Michelle: Yea, everybody tells me so Paul: Can't buy me love? Michelle: No, no, no, no! Paul: Well, I don't want to sound like a wacker, but for some reason I need to find a guitar real fast. I'll see you birds round, no? (Paul faintly heard in background as he leaves): Can't buy me love, love, can't buy me love...
Michelle: Isn't he dreamy? Loretta: The cute Beatle for sure! (Both scream excitedly!)

The third interview she made was with the quiet Beatle, George:
Michelle: I can't believe this is happening! Bill, Rita, Julia and Loretta thanks so much for being here. Bill: Well, would rather be out tiger hunting, but anything for my lovely Rita. Rita: Oh Bill, nothing can come between us. Julia: This whole trip is like a sleeping sand, silent cloud touching me! Loretta: Hey, gotta get it while we can! Michelle: Shurrup--here comes George! (Excited screams from the girls while Bill sighs in jealousy) Michelle: George! George! Hi! George: Hello, how are you? Michelle: Just fab now that you're here. You're my favourite Beatle you know! George: Thank you--you're too kind! (Laughter ensues) Michelle: You know George, if I needed someone to love, you're the one that I'd be thinking of. That is If I needed someone. George: Hmm, how interesting. Michelle: Now George, I know you're busy and all but if I had some more time to spend, then I' guess I'd be with you my friend. George: You're thoughtful. But for some strange reason, I really need to find my guitar. I'm feeling very creative right now. Michelle: Must you go? There's just something in the way you move that attracts me like no other (is interrupted by George) George: I really have to go, before I lose this feeling. Bye! (faintly heard in background as he leaves): If I needed someone...
Michelle: He didn't say much did he? Julia: Well, he is the quiet one you know. (laughter)
