This is true Erik... Many people are shallow and superficial, even Linda herself said, you can't make in this business unless you're hot or a babe..She herself should know this because she lived it, in the early stages of her career, this was a big part of how she sold records.. her image/whos he was.. along with her gorgeous voice and the songs she chose.. which isn't bad, I think. it's good because she attracted many fans this way then we got to know her views outside of music. We all grow older and have different priorities in life, even Linda , now as she's matured, she's more of an advocate-activist for causes she feels deeply for. No matter if she bought into all that superficial plastic surgery ect trying to be 30 again. lol..I don't even think that would gain her many more fans or younger fans.. She had her time. Just like the younger and popular artist of today..they'll grow old and somebody new will come along and the cycle repeats itself.

that is a well thought out objective analysis, dianna. I do think though that linda gains fans and loses some just like any other artist. younger fans I think are happening now with the advent of youtube. they see how utterly great she is (I am subjective on that one. there is no other singer for me musically. my personality is such that I am loyal and almost feel like it would be a betrayal to like somebody else but that is my issue lol) eddiejinnj

Quote by Dianna: All true, of course. I only wish the media would understand this; but with a few exceptions here and there, they really don't. They like cheesy sensationalism, and Linda isn't about to give it to them now. I don't think she even did much of this when she was ultra-popular in the late 70s.
As I've said, as uncomfortable as she was with the idea of being a "superstar" and a "celebrity", she knew how to use her celebrity for great purposes (and still does, especially with the issue of immigration and border enforcement). And although the idea of being a "sex symbol" may have been a burden, her ability to combine her sexiness and spunk with a sharp mind made her a hero to a lot of aspiring female artists. That's a lot to be thankful to Linda for (IMHO).

well Erik, during the 70's as compared to now, times were a lot different. As far as sex appeal for that time, I think Linda held her own.. What you have today is a mixture of the performance art along with a striptease.. it's now become the norm. to shock.. . I remember back in the very early 80's a relative went to see the Stones in los angeles.. the opening act was Prince (before he was popular) he came on stage with a g-string and a jacket.. lol.. well the audience boo'd him and threw stuff at him.. yes, even the people at a stones concert were too oonservative for that. ha ha.. I don't think the media would expect any weird behavior from a 67 year old pop star who's retired from singing and dedicates her time to other things.. She's always been a class act, even back then I doubt much negativity was written about her...My only hope is that when her book comes out it's really good and many people out of curiosity will read it.. like they did when the movie walk the line came out. I want everybody to understand what an intelligent and gifted woman she is.

Yah! I finally found it www.facebook.com/LindaRonstadtOfficialIt looks like something put up by Simon & Schuster to promote "the book." If they had your page taken down to improve their stats, that's just s**tty business practice. I'm lodging a complaint.

. . . they don't play Helen Reddy anymore; is that a right wing conspiracy? she was all over the place in the 70's and to be honest I believe she had more number one singles than linda (though not nearly as many album sales to my knowledge). can we have a fun non-judgmental forum here? eddiejinnj I still hear Helen Reddy-- not so much the dated I Am Woman, but I've been hearing Angie Baby a lot. It's been a couple of months since I heard Linda on the radio, and come to think of it, that was Cousin Brucie on Sirius radio. I firmly believe there is a conspiracy against Linda, but I think it is a conspiracy among left-wingers. The conspirators are Dave Marsh, Jann Wenner, Robert Hilburn, and others. Since it's a conspiracy, all the details have not yet come to light. I firmly believe there was a right-wing conspiracy to discredit Linda also- among commentators on the Fox News Network. They took a simple song dedication during an encore and by the time they got through twisting Miss Ronstadt's words, a great part of the public believes she wants no Christians or Republicans in her audience. I still get emails from folks who think this. (How odd that someone with such an opinion would have a forum at the Grace Cathedral-- but as Bill Maher says, these people live in a bubble that keeps the truth out.) But oh, back to Helen Reddy-- she had three #1 single hits-- Linda only had one #1 hit, You're No Good. However, Linda had at least 2 other singles that were #1 sellers but failed to make #1 on the Hot 100- those were Somewhere Out There and Don't Know Much. I suspect When Will I Be Loved may have been a #1 song too but radio station reporting kept Love Will Keep Us Together in the #1 spot because of outside pressures. Perhaps there is a conspiracy here somewhere. Correct you are about albums though. Helen Reddy never had a #1 album- Linda had several: Heart Like A Wheel Hasten Down the Wind (#1 Country) Simple Dreams Living in the USA Trio (#1 Country) and Mad Love (would have been #1 but I'm sure there was a conspiracy somewhere!) Am I for real?

Quote by Partridge:
So true what Mr. Maher says. Now I do believe Linda did make a statement once to the effect that it can "ruin her day" if she knew that there were Christians and Republicans out in the audience--the kind of statement that Fox News and every right-wing blogger can take out of context and smear her with. And given that Linda may not be much up on the way the Internet works, she may equally be in the dark about how what she says can come back to haunt her. But when she made that quote, I think she referred to the possibility of having some follower of the Pat Robertson/Christian Coalition sect in the audience, and not just a common believer.
I only wish she'd clarify stuff like this every once in a while.

me too. I would hope that she would not single out any group or groups or populations of peoples based on beliefs. really a true "liberal" would believe that everybody has a right to voice their opinions. I say we go for inclusion and judge people on an individual basis. if people hurt other people well there should be appropriate justice no matter what your politiceddiejinnjal/economic beliefs are.

I think you are kidding rt re: the conspiracy re: love will keep us together. I really did hear that song more than when will I be loved honesatly. that was like a year b4 I got into linda. when there is somebody in the number one spot there is somebody rt below them. they have done specials on artists that have hit number 2 one or more times but never number one. so it does happen. I really have not heard a Helen reddy song in like forever. I think one time like a yr ago I heard her as a flashback song if i'm correct. eddiejinnj

Quote by Partridge re. "When Will I Beloved?" vs. "Love Will Keep Us Together":
Then we can all be thankful that "Love Will Keep Us Together" wasn't released in a country mix too (LOL). At least Linda copped a #1 C&W hit out of what, in her hands, is essentially an updated rockabilly record (IMHO).

We already have proof that Dave Marsh admitted he has been instrumental in keeping KISS out of the Hall. He couldn't do it on his own so he had to enlist others and the meaning of a conspiracy is "when two or more people - breathe together - aka conspire to accomplish a particular goal. We all know of Marsh's dislike for Linda so he seems to be the head conspirator. Unfortunately Linda's timing was off with When Will I Be Loved. Any other time it would have been #1 with a bullet.

I contacted S&S and asked them about this. I got a response: "This is an official Facebook page for Linda, by Linda, but it is being managed by Simon & Schuster. Apologies for the wrongful merging of the pages. It was a glitch, but we have spoken to our Facebook rep and the page has been reinstated." Actually, there were many Linda pages that went missing, but are back now.

I noticed that a person made like 4 or 5 Linda pages on facebook & does nothin' with them, he also seems to be a big Tiffany fan. The person seems rather odd from some of the posts I've read. Facebook should delete pages that are not active, I know that sometimes a person gets busy in their life but come on, that many pages by one person? lol Thanks again for lookin' into that. :-)

well basically one or 2 people have a **** on against her. they seem to be the powers that b. it more of a personal grudge/spite thing than a widespread conspiracy. if we want to be technical if 2 people are involved it to me a mini conspiracy lol.as ronstadtfanaz said, it has happened to KISS. it just seems they take their "powers" too seriously. as tony quoted to me from Voltaire "with power comes responsibility." these people there don't seem to know that quote lol. to my knowledge it would have nothing to do with views on politics in Linda's case. there have been MANY theories proposed on here. for whatever reason it just wrong as we all agree. the more vocal people are for linda MAY help. I just don't want people disappointed if it doesn't. eddiejinnj

This just popped up on my fb newsfeed.. from the Linda Ronstadt Facebook Page . Just now posted
A sneak preview quote from Linda Ronstadt's upcoming memoir SIMPLE DREAMS:
“The essential elements of singing are voice, musicianship, and story. It is the rare artist that has all three in abundance.”

I think you are kidding rt re: the conspiracy re: love will keep us together. Yeah, I was kidding. I decided to get carried away with my conspiracy theories. Love Will Keep Us Together was the #1 selling song of the year. It obstructed many tunes from the top spot. If you're quoting Billboard as the source, I've always had a suspicion about their Top 40 chart positions not being on the up and up. They treated and counted radio airplay of songs as actual sales. Based on the population size of the listening area, a record could be awarded anywhere between 5 points and 100 points for radio airplay, and then those points were regarded as sales. That deception skewered the records that were in the Top 40 - indeed, the Top 100 or Top 200 or whatever their sales charts stopped at. How many records that should've been number one were denied that position because those records received less radio airplay than others, even though their real sales may have outsold the records that were at number one? Billboard was also deceptive in their practice about flip sides accounting for sales and airplay. Supposedly, in 1969, Billboard made the decision that flip sides would only be noted with an "F" to indicate they were being played and accounting for sales. Technically, that should've meant that a double sided hit 45 should've been regarded as hits but Billboard generally only credited the A-side but not the B-side. There were exceptions to their rules, so they seemed to be very inconsistent. And the throwing out of the rules seemed to be whenever they involved certain artists. Even today, Billboard suspends their rules when those rules are inconvenient. And that also applies to albums - generally, Billboard does not count albums sold in Wal Mart as Wal Mart is not part of the Soundscan sham. Billboard had to suspend their rules so that the Eagles's "Long Road Out of Eden" (sold only in Wal Mart stores) could be credited as a number one album. If Billboard had been faithful to their own rules, one could've been forgiven for thinking LROOE was a flop. But, Billboard ignored their own rules so that the album could be in their charts. I just wouldn't trust Billboard as an accurate reporting source of what's actually selling (or sold).

well yeah based on that way of calculating rank, lots of songs could have been in different ranks both upward and downward. somewhere out there and don't know much were number one songs saleswise but were kept out of the number one spot by the airplay factor. eddiejinnj

well yeah based on that way of calculating rank, lots of songs could have been in different ranks both upward and downward. somewhere out there and don't know much were number one songs saleswise but were kept out of the number one spot by the airplay factor. eddiejinnj Singer Glen Campbell once spoke about having million sellers that missed out on the Top 40 altogether, even though his records would make other charts in Billboard, like the Easy Listening and Country charts. But, one would think if they were being marketed as pop singles (or pop albums), those records should've been equally as high on the pop charts. And when they were not? The problem with Billboard's charts is that apart from the factoring in of radio airplay, their sales information came from about 15,000 different stores across the US. That missed out on a lot of stores selling singles and albums - the results couldn't help but be skewered in the first place. But, then they added in radio airplay and the problem with that was as one disk jockey put it, was that a record could be a bigger hit on the turntable than a seller in the stores. Ideally, Billboard's pop charts should've reflected sales only or maybe had separate charts for radio airplay with no prejudices or biases favoring one artist over another. The artists whose records should've been number one but who missed out because radio airplay helped put over another artist's record which sold less in the stores were in essence, cheated. It probably doesn't matter in the grand scheme of things even though it's a matter of honesty.

Here's another quote from her upcoming book. Got this from her FB page:“I felt like a bomb had exploded in my head. I could tell that the song, both plain spoken and delicate, had a highly original approach to describing the deadly peril of romantic love… It rearranged my entire musical landscape.” –Linda Ronstadt, describing her reaction upon first hearing the lyrics to “Heart Like a Wheel,” a breathtakingly beautiful ballad now recognized around the world.
