Here is the music that goes with it. Funny how the cover here is different. This recording seems a bit fast to me as Linda does not typically sound like this. It almost has an old time sound to it because it is speeded up.

I think I might have scanned it too big. Perhaps so-but thanks for the opportunity to stare into Linda's beautiful eyes!

Of course, you can hold down the CTRL and minus keys at the same time to make the image the viewable size you want, and then scale back up with CTRL +

The title track didn't make it onto "What's New" and I think she did an excellent job with it on the Wexler album. I think it is her best vocal of the album. We can't know what it would have sounded like on WN but I am not sure how she could have done it better. Firstly, I think the song is more of a "Hummin" song and style. Secondly, from what I remember in listening to the Wexler project, Linda seems the most comfortable and really gives it her all. Thoughts? eddiejinnj

1981 lost album. it does sound different. and to my ears more authentic. when she gets swinging in falling in love again, I can hear it coming from an old radio during that era. even tho I'm not from that era I can somehow hear it. maybe I ll play it for my 88 yr old neighbor..

Thanks for posting, Tony.
Back in the late 1980s, I lived just up the street from a new/used record store called Rockaway Records in the Silverlake area of Los Angeles. While going through the Linda Ronstadt section, there was this album. The store clearly marked that there was no record inside and that it was just the art. The store was selling it for $250. I could not afford to spend that kind of money. But I did hold it in my hand (granted it was protected with a lot of plastic!). We can debate here on which versions people prefer, but I believe Linda made the right decision to scrap this and go with Nelson Riddle. She received such acclaim for her work with Nelson Riddle. It was yet another high point in a stellar career.

If she didn't scrap it we might not ever had gotten the Nelson Riddle last two sessions. It is better to have both versions of the first. Bad for Jerry but good for us. I do like both.

Saw Linda and Nelson & Orchestra at Radio City Music Hall (1983) and I loved hearing Keeping Out of Mischief live. At the time I remember wondering why it wasn't on the album. It would have added a little more kick to What's New. And I never understood why she didn't put it on the other two albums either. I think she didn't realize how great her own performance of that song was and how well-suited to her voice it was.

The version she recorded with The Nelson Riddle Orchestra was donated to the USA FOR AFRICA project. It was not included on the album with the other donated tracks. I've contacted the organization asking if there is any possibility the track could be made available for digital download. If or when I get a response I'll post it here.

It would have been great to have had the final recorded track of Keeping Out of Mischief on the USA for Africa album. I have seen a couple of reasons why it wasn't included. One article said that the song did not fit in with the other more contemporary tracks on the album, and that makes some sense. Also Harry Belafonte, who had a lot of input in the project, did not want Linda included because he was pissed off about her appearing in South Africa during the artistic boycott of that country, although some artists who performed there (Tina Turner, Ray Charles) were included in the project.
Not to change the subject, but Frank Sinatra, Rod Stewart, Elton John, Queen, Linda Ronstadt, Beach Boys, Helen Reddy, Dolly Parton, Liza Minelli, Ray Charles, Julio Iglesias, Barry Manilow, Ann-Margret, Shirley Bassey, Cliff Richard, Kenny Rogers, Leo Sayer, George Benson, the Staple Singers, Cher, Glen Campbell, the Osmonds, and many others violated the UN boycott of South Africa. But only one of the above named artists caused a storm of controversy.

I would have thought Belafonte would have gotten over that while Linda is in agreement with him on Cuba and has visited the island nation. If I remember correctly Harry went there during a ban.

Quote by ronstadtfanaz:
Yes, but the ban on Cuba was strictly a U.S. thing, not a United Nations thing like the anti-apartheid ban against South Africa had been.
Quote by Tony:
I myself have always heard conflicting statements about what Belafonte said about that--whether he really was angry at Linda, or whether he just meant his comments in jest (in which case, I don't think he succeeded). I do agree, however, that the song wouldn't have fit in with what was on the USA For Africa album; and in any case, because of being down with a cold or flu (according to Linda), she wasn't even there at the studio where they recorded "We Are The World" that night (January 28-29, 1985, if I am remembering right).

So that was between Lush Life and For Sentimental Reasons. She hadn't used the track yet and donated it? I guess she was so into that music at the time, she probably gave no thought re: how it would mix in with the project. It then becomes the property to whom she gave it to and/or they probably had the master copy? They recorded "We Are The World" backstage after the Grammys of that year right? I know Linda got nominated for "Best Pop Vocal Performance, Female" for the album LL. I think Nelson was nominated and maybe won and I know it won "Best Album Package; an art director's award. eddiejinnj
PS: Nelson was nominated and won after he passed away "Best Instrumental Arrangement Accompanying a Vocal" for the title track "Lush Life."

I always wished she gave us "Keeping Out of Mischief” on one of the Nelson Riddle albums. Lush Life seems to me the album best suited for it although I don't know what song would have been left off so KOOM could have fit.

Was Keeping Out of Mischief ever released on any album?
I recall it was offered for We Are the World album but was refused because a) it didn’t fit in with the other contemporary tracks b) Linda was on the Harry Belafonte Shitlist because of her recent South Africa concerts
So it should be available as a future bonus track.
